Can someone pls give me a site or some info on Benchmarks for CPU's and Vid cards
example, Tbird vs PIII or P4

and Geforce Vs Voodo3, 4 ,5?

or any magazines that currently have benchmarks in them?
Thanks

well, if you wanted to know about geforce 1 vs the voodoo series

it beats them all quite convincingly...
but Voodoo chips (VSA) are far better for simulator type games and 2d image quality.

and if that doesn't satisfy you

WoHoo I just figured out how to O/C my vud card
I got that NVida Cool bits hack thingy.
I got a Geforce 256 SDR 32mb
I was wondering which thing do i crank up
Core Speed
or Memory speed?
and by how much?

Memory is the bottleneck - that's why the newer cards are DDR. Try bumping it up in say 10mhz intervals and bench (use 3dmark or Q3 or something) and if the PC doesn't do weird things try bumping it up again. Repeat process until you start getting crashes/visual artefacts (ie: crap on the screen) and then drop it back a notch to the previous overclock.

You can also try OCing the core as well, but it doesn't provide that much benefit.

I run my cheap 'n' nasty Geofrce 256 thusly:

Engine: 144.97 Mhz (up from 120)
Mem Cl: 154.89 Mhz (up from 140)

these are pretty damn modest to say the least... i figure they are a pretty good starting point for ya if you have at least a half decent Geforce with just standard cooling. I'd be interested to hear how things go

I got my old GeForce SDR up to 170 on the Memory without hassles.

Sorry I just had to gloat a little :)

hmmmm that's weird
my Geforce has these standard setting
Core - 120
Mem - 160
I cranked the core to 122
and the mem to 170
I got about and extra 10 fps in CS
and I did a Q3 benchmark test
29.1fps in High quailty mode
I think this is still rather poor
/me thinks it's the CPU

Different cards different stock settings from the manufacturer.

I found the old SDR wasn't all that flash when I put it on my 400, but as soon as I put it on an Athlon 600 it was very nice.

Of course the other thing to consider is what are your quake3 settings? Is it 100% default high quality? ie: 800x600 gibs on etc? Cos you get a big frame rate boost by turning off gibs and blood. Also the version of the video card drivers makes a huge difference, oh and so does anti-aliasing. Make sure that's not turned on.
