Topic: Case modding question: why?

Okay, I acknowledge regular hardware upgrades is the norm for PC gaming, I can even nuderstand paying $50 for a mousepad, because it is intended to have an affect on your performance, but can somebody explain to me the obsession with case modding?

Like, does it really help to have a Lian-Li case? What is it about having a blue neon tube stuffed inside your PC that is so compelling? Does a perspex window really bring you a closer insight into the working of your PC?

Obviously plenty of people buy them
I'm not being facetious, I'm genuinely trying to get a handle on why people spend s***loads of cash tarting up the appearance of a PC. What's the motivation? Do people still look at aluminium cases or PCs covered in lights and think "wow that's cool", or has it now matured into something different to that?

Case mod fans or people who have flashy PCs please reply.

Its the same as putting a spoiler on a car, and hell, ive seen neon lights stuck on a few cars as well. Its the wank factor, and who cares, the car/case looks cooler with the mods.

I saw a neon light at JB HIFI at capalaba it was on the wall and black and there was a big burnt patch around it where it caught fire, we laughed

So it's a case of people equating their PC to something like a car, a personal object that you adorn to impress others?

swiss, the neon lights that you see in post PCs are actually made for cars. Way back in the day before these moding companies came out, you use to have to cut the cigie lighter adapter off.

i think its the whole idea of "look cooler" that is the issue.. Does it really look cooler?? personally i think the cars from Fast and the furious look like large plastic toys with wheels attached... cases with a vast array of flashy strobe light things with lcd panels and the like to me look like ass.. they serve no real functional purpose other then saying "OMG LOOK AT MY CASE I NEED ATTENTION NOW OMG".. as i said before i put 1 fan in my case that wasn't already there.. boy do i feel l33t...

I mod my case because it is a challenge and looks good. I want somethnigto pass my time other than palying games or building my train track so i mod my case. Is fun and always good to see what other people have done.

As aid above, it is just like modding a car.

thats how i did my neon :)

i did it at first for better cooling, and i just got carried away with it, my penis hasnt grown any bigger and it hasnt made my computer any faster ( a lil cooler but not faster ) but im happy with it, the orange fits in with my decor and i get a few comments from the odd few that see it, fact is im happy with it and while im happy everyone can go and f*** themselves

doesnt have to be to impress others, you spend a considerable amount of time sitting in front of it, why not make it aesthetically pleasing (just like buying a nice looking sofa, even though a crappy looking one is just as comfy).

Also it depends on the type of case modding, for instance fan controllers and extra fans are there for functionality and better cooling. Personally i dont like plain boring beige computers so id rather mine look nicer, its just a hobby/pastime really.

I don't get case modding either :/

Maybe I am over it, in terms of age? I think its more the younger people that are into (correct me if i am wrong)

The only thing i have is one of those enermax server case things, I actually did get this before most people (in syd anyways) had one, I got it as i did a full upgrade and needed a new case and it looked mad with clip in hdd bays and shiz, I didn't know it came with fans, yes they are running (basically because they are there, i wouldnt add any just for the hell of it) the only thing i regret is it being so farken heavy, its a bithc to take to lans because of its weight and size, other then that it serves its purpose :)

i dont think ppl add fans just for the hell of it .... they are there to cool stuff down

but i guess some tards will go overboard with 8 x 120mm fans :D

When I get a new folder/textbook, within minutes it has drawings scrawled all over it in different colours.

Its just my natural urge to customize s***.

A lot of us (im not saying all, and Im not saying me) spend a whole s***load of time on our computers, so its only natural some people would want to customize their s***. Desktop patterns, samurize scripts, case modding, its all there.

Im all for it, you nerds need to learn how hardware works in the real world. ;)

Yeah I do sit in front of mine for hours, and guess what - it sits under the desk near my feet! Wowee! I'm really gonna have to mod it up so I can increase the size of my penis.

Non-functional case modding is an absolute waste of money. I don't see any of you modding your VCR or DVD player cases. Or maybe you've MODDED THE F*CKING WASHING MACHINE.

Where does it end?

im gonna mod the internet into my fridge!

hunter: the ppl who mod their cases maybe have some "pride" in their pc (hardware wise)

you probably dont have the same feeling towards yours cause its a s***box (i think :D)

i cant see how modding a case is different to putting a body-kit on a car :/

great bring out the penis extension argument, honestly i thought youd try something better than that.

Its a waste of money in your opinion! Do i care what/when/how you spend your money? Ive got the money to do it and i like the way modded cases look, therfore ill continue to mod my case.

It's all about what's aesthetically apealing to the individual. Appreciation of beauty (symmetry, perfection etc) is a human trait. Whatever does it for you I guess.

Case modding is still gay though :P

If I had a car I wouldn't mod it. I don't have a Windows background, and I don't really care what my furniture looks like so long as it is comfortable.

For me it was pure boredom. I did it coz I was bored, I didn't have a car to hot up or modify so I modded my computer. I think this question could also be asked about cars. Why mod a car when a standard hyundai excel will get you from A to B. Why don't we all just buy excels? Why buy a crap skyline and turn it into an uber show winner?

As for the lian li things, well I think some people just have too much money, I got my enermax case because it had that door thing up top to hide all the drives & make it look tidy and it was lockable so 'tards at QGL didn't turn my PC off (or on) without my permission.

I also did it for the experience, to show off my metal cutting & perspex cutting skillz to all my mates that couldn't cut a straight line to save their lives >:-)

Why blue lights? I often ask that question, why do people like blue...f***s me but I was way ahead of the "blue led" phase, I was putting them in s*** like my sega megadrive before I even had a PC.

Now PS2 has a blue led standard, maybe I"ll put a green one in it just to be a prick :)

edit:
If I had a car I wouldn't mod it

so if you bought a car with just an AM radio, s*** exhaust and a f***ed engine coz it was all you could afford at the time you wouldn't fix the engine, get a new exhaust and put in a better radio?

I don't have a Windows background

what color is your windows background? Is it teal(win98) or that blue color(win2k)? If it's any other than those two it's modded.

Gees the world would suck if no one was creative and everything was un-painted, and everyone drove the same model car :/

Everyhouse was the same, everyone wearing the same cloths, The same dinner every night..

hell yeah!

modding gives you something to do.

and BTW the main reason why people mod their pc is becasue they are borded, or they have, shall he say, a heat problem

Errrrm. No. Unless your a stupid retard. Case modding is all about personalising your property. Atm mine is the green machine with a four leaf clover window in the side, with a blue & red neon. So far it has cost me about $30 all up. So expensive?? Get f***ed.

And cmon, originality is the key to life.

Its the same as putting a spoiler on a car
Hrmmm not quite because amazingly spoilers are designed for more of a purpose than looks, so are bodykits. A sparkly wicked paintjob and shiz is a better comparision.

The _purple_ Win2k default one.

Are 'looks' not a purpose?
Do case mods never serve a 'purpose' by your definition?
Do most people who get spoilers do it for anything other than looks?
Do modern vehicles need spoilers?

spoilers have no use on a road car the low speeds that people travel at negate their 'purpose' they are simply part of the bodykit...i had a chuckle once a guy told me he was gettin a spoiler to make his car 'more aerodynamic' i just chortled...

This may have already been said, and sorry if it has.. i couldn't be bothered reading everything.

It's a statement of originality. In this socialised world people need a way to escape the constructs of the world we live in and have a little originality. I myself don't do it- i might one day however.

It's like asking the questions Why do people cut/colour their hair? Why do people wear the clothes they wear? Etc, etc...

It's a statement of originality...

I havn't read any reply so I appologise in advance if I repeat anything.

It is for style. Some people go over the top (rice), but most are a modest improvement to the style of their PC. People drop by and say "wow, cool computer", and they get some satisfaction, it satisfies peoples curiousities.

Sort of challenged people I suppose, gives them something to do. Accomplishment.

Respect from peers, and kudos from friends.

Well, thats about time to get back to putting the perspex screen on my monitor....

Why do people renovate their houses?
Why do cars come in different colours, shapes and styles?
Why do people paint or sculpt?

It's all about the basic human nature to surround one self with nice things that look good.

In my case, the missus thinks the modded PC now compliments the lounge rather than cluttering it up.

Well done dude. That's awesome!

I just added 3 more fans to my giant enermax case which takes it up to a total of 7 fans now. It's crazy but it was fun drilling into the side of a perfectly good looking black case. Plus it makes my machine sound heaps more beasty, especially late at night when everything's really quiet around me. Except for my f***ing loud machine.

hunter/toilet duck, i'm sure you have an opinion, but it's been thoroughly established that you're a f***wit. :P

if CS isn't your thing, then don't play it, and shut the f*** up. if case modding isn't your thing, then shut the f*** up.

i case mod cuz i was bored and i wanted my dvd and burner to match my case colour. my case looks good, it's very functional, and it's more asthetically pleasing than it was. plus a blue glow in the room at night gives good atmosphere for games.
