I'm sort of having the same problem myself with Quake3 at the moment ...

If I try to play Quake3 when I am not connected to the net it sits at that white screen for 45+ seconds before finally loading up.

Even though if I look at the Windows Task Manager it tells me Quake3 is no longer responding :\

I'm not sure though if its SP1 or the new v1.32 Quake3 patch

But I never had a problem before installing either of those things :P

ok...i uninstalled sp1, reinstalled q3, and reinstalled the latest nvidia drivers (in that order), and it still crashes! ut runs great, but anything that uses opengl crashes and burns...damn ms must be trying to kill id.

I have this problem, but once you plug into a network and there is a Quake 3 Server online, it seems to work instantly!
Go figure!! seems to me it trys to find server protocols or something like gamespy?!?

I'm running XP home, no sp, and get the same thing when trying to load (As in activate, not install) a mod. Does it offer to send off some error report? (Not that ud wanna send ANY info off to m$, wonder how may ppl actually USE that error report thing...)

i am connected to the net (cable modem) but it hits the white screen and crashes within 5 secs...i removed all mods when i reinstalled, and i'm running 1.31...the error message wuz the error reporting window...here's more good news...after crashing, it kicks me back to my desktop, and the brightness is too high...i can reset it, but anything that runs in fullscreen is too bright to work with...i hafta restart to fix it...damn ms...btw...i am running xp pro corp
