I have a Pentium 200 MMX box i wanna make into a dedicated server for BF1942 - for LAN's.

Do u think it will handle this ok considering it wont be running any graphical stuff?
What Operating system should i use Linux/windows 2k/NT/etc.)?
I can put like 128-256MB SDRAM in it.
I expect to have a max of 16 players connected to it.

What do u ppl suggest?

i'd say atleast a duron 800mhz wiht 256 sd ram, and i'll bet you that will still run choppy.

you're gonna need a high end machine to run a decent server something in the high ghz range

A 200MMX should be fine for a personal firewall.

An 800mhz whatever should be fine for a bf1942 or an UT2k3 server.

ok. thanx for ur help ppl. its is quite obvious that my P200 is useless as far as BF1942 goes.
Now....to get me a duron 800......

you can always overclock the duron a bit for 200mhz more
might help

our P4 2.0ghz machine with a gig of DDR, running 2k, barely holds 64 players

and just because I like to point out the obvious, there is obviously a memory leak in the dedicated server, because even with a 4 player server, BF1942 dedicated takes 100% cpu and ram

Speaking of BF1942 dedicated server, I noticed the win32 version of it is VERY FRIGGING BUGGY when I was running it on a LAN @ work exp.

Talk to capto, he had it running all QGL without too many issues. Maybe you just don't know what you're doing?

I followed the readme and FAQs, so if I was doing anything wrong, it's the fault of whoever wrote them :).

Hey koopz you had that dual 933 system what did it run like for a bf server. Assuming bf supports smp.

edit: Plecostomus realisticlly a 800-900 should be fine for anything less than a 16player game.

at qgl i had a dedicated gf1942server going and also at NudgeeLAN, It was a P3 1ghz with 512 sdram and it ran 32 players at about 40fps.

no bf1942 doesn't run in SMP :(

didn't run ded BF1942 @ Qgl.

after some experimentation with the duals, it seemed wiser to leave the BF-lubbin' to the admins.

The machine runs a 32 person server well, however things were chugging horribly @ the 40 person mark :/

a damn bugger really, as the machine sat there all weekend serving up SOF2, UT2003 and an ftp without a hitch.

methinks this game needs some serious work, if not plain ripping itself up and jumping into the nearest Id-coded engine. so sloppy...
