just watched an awsome doco. was about a guy that had been blind since he was 3 got his site back at 50+ thru stem cell stuff.

was so intresting. buy looking at a can of coke he had nfi what it was, but as soon as he picked it up he knew. theres an old philosphical debate.. "if a man is blind from birth and gets his site back, would he be able to tell which is a cube and a sphere just by looking at them."

also, they showed him a bunch of pictures of faces. he had no way of telling which was female or male and got very frustrated when women had short hair, or guys and ear rings ect.

also he was never tricked buy those "optical illusion" things. you know where u have lines that don't look parrell but are and stuff.

crossing the road freaked him out and was very scared to. he said it was easier without site.

he had to relearn how to see. for example, he didnt relise that objects further away appear smaller, he just thought they were smaller. and if an object was infront of another, he didnt understand where the other one was.

anyway.. was very cool.

Articles like these make me think how much of what I see is really perception and how much is sight.

I could look at a glass cup, I see the cylinder shape with a dark circle and a slightly differnt shading of colour within the circle. I percieve that as a container that can hold a liquid.

Imagine living in a world were all you saw was Circles and squares and triangles, lots of differing shading of colours. Not being able to judge the distance of objects because you havnt learned how sight works. You could be stareing at your hands and not know what they are or how far away they are. You could feel where they are.

Or looking at a wall that is moving away from you, we can tell that by looking at how the shadows are positioned, how certain lines relate to other lines and various other visual ques that we have learnt to master as a child. To a man without sight, all they could see would be quadralateral that is big on end and small on the other, shadows mean nothing only a differnt colour and a differnt shape to look at and try and make sense of. Lukily for this man he had 3 years as a baby to learn the real basics of sight so he can deal with it.

It would be a very very interesting experience that is for sure.

there is a val kilmer movie (was on optusvision last year) that is kinda about this, he plays a person whos goes blind at an early age & gets his sight back through some new medical breakthrough & how hes affected by it & learning to see all over again, its also kinda a love story but not a bad movie..

they said he had to fully relearn. the first 3 years meant nothing.

the brain could get the singal fine, but didnt know what to do with it.

they reckon only 200 every have done this. one dude in the 50's got his eye sight restored.

he wasnt so lucky tho, alot of things really upset him. liked chipped paint for example. everything in his "blind" world was perfect. when he could see he didnt like it. he used to shave in the dark too cause he could bear to look at himself.

he got very depressed and died 3years after the restore.

again, was great doco.

id date a blind chick just for the fact that i could be standing naked right infront of her with my penis 3 cms from her mouth while talking politics or some s*** with out her even knowing or reacting, that would be kick ass

I saw the doco too. I thought the story about the Elephant was funny. They had him draw an elephant. Then they took him to a zoo and he walked around one three times, and still didn't know it was an elephant.

Those first few years ment quite alot indeed. It made the differnce between being able to use his eyeballs and not being able to.

If he never had sight, the brain cells usually used for eyesight gets used for other things, so he would have no circuits for eyesight if it wasnt for those first 3 years..

I am pretty sure he would still be able to move his eyes around. As, yes, you are correct, the vision part of his brain wouldn't be used, but his eye motor area could and probably would still be used.

Unless, he was blind cuz his eyes got ripped out of his head, then he couldn't use them..
