Microsoft have entered the broardband arena in the USA offering DSL plans from US$39.95 per month, and so far i have not found any info on how much data is included, leaving me to assume an AUP, or possibily no data restriction is in place.
Microsoft's exclusive IntelliSpeed technology monitors your DSL line, provides automatic technology updates, and retunes itself for optimum performance and reliability to ensure that you get the most from your broadband connection.

MSN Broadband offers different speeds depending on your local telephone company. See below for details:

Telephone Company (Downstream/Upstream)
Bellsouth 1.5 Mbps/256 Kbps
SBC 768 Kbps/128 Kbps
Verizon 768 Kbps/128 Kbps
Qwest 640 Kbps/256 Kbps
Could be interesting to see if microsoft's apparent interest in australia's broardband scene ends up in them launching a DSL service here in the future.

I wonder what their helpdesk would say if someone called up asking for help on getting Linux or a *BSD working with their service.

I still think it's great how Optus offers: 8 Mbps Downstream =D
And even in the wonderful tech world of USA (*cough*) they offer a highest of 1.5 Mbps.

good move from Microsoft, be cool if they went that way with Xbox live in Australia.

rather than partner with Telstra and restrice the Xbox live users to speed caps and data limits, open their own ADSL service and offer internet and Xbox live packages.

1.5meg unlimited for ~$80? Bring it on. I'm all in favour of more competition, even if it does come in the form of the big M.

cbf doing the conversion but it's more like 160.... so you cable people better get up every morning and give thanks to the god of broadband that you have access to cable (not to mention the beter pings on cable too).

Try 3.. and that's back and forth from Optus's servers. Little bit less from within Australia, and a whole lot less from outside the country.

And even in the wonderful tech world of USA (*cough*) they offer a highest of 1.5 Mbps.

They do have Cable over there as well, you know. However, most people tend to go with DSL, probably because a lotta people in the US have cable TV, and other cable services.. and as cable is a shared network, well.. I'm sure that it effects them more than it does us.

Besides... I'd rather take a 1.5Mbps Microsoft DSL anyday, than Optus or Telstra's s***ty 3Gb breadcrumbs.

no no no crunch... technically ADSL/DSL s***s all over cable . it is just that Telstra r00ts it up the buttox so you cant take advantage of the full capabillities of ADSL/DSL. The only reason Optus Cable is better is because Optus doesnt root their services..

Yeah that true. DSL is better then cable. See in the future cable will disappear and it be DSL. DSL is much faster it just that everything in Australia is squeezed out.

Meaning that they keep old technology here as long as possible, then they bring out new technology.

FOR EXAMPLE DVD's!!!!!

I thought DSL was capable of more bandwidth, but had higher ping times, making cable faster..

I hope Microsoft release their broadband in competition with Telstra here and not in cahoots with them.. I'd like to see them rock all over the greedy hellstra bandits

the best thing about cable is that you dont need a phone line.

So if MS DSL comes out it will cost like $100.00 per month. $80 for the DSL and $20 for the phone line.

On another subject, It is said that broadband services will go down soon. At the moment it is a rip off. But I bet any money that in the not too distant future, Broadband will be cheaper and more people will subscribe to it.
They just gotta get rid of those f***ing dumb caps and limits because that is a HUGE turnoff!

The caps are only a turn off to the people that they don't want as customers.

Azure I think what he means is you don't NEED a phone line, so you don't have to have a fixed phone at all, I know most peeps have at least a phone line, but some people may not and with cable you are not required to have one. But with my optus luvn I don't pay for my line rental anyhow! AND just to be amusing I used my phone line so much last month when I got the bill it was $0 dollars, I pissed myself when I saw that, but afterward it occured to me to get out more....

TGP is fitted to most new residences, hence DSL won't work for everyone. So DSL is great but if your phone line can support it.
