Why would you bother using a HKS BOV on a standard car? Just use a Turbosmart one or something cheaper... You don't *need* a HKS one, but it's always nice to be able to say it ;)

my last post was my lil bro, but anyway, mr sub "woffer" needs to actually go do some research into cars first, do you actually know what a blow off valve does and why its there?
or just that it makes a cool *PSCHHH* noise and means the car is turbocharged and that makes it r33t and go very fast!!&*^* oh and seeing we all know u dont have ur license yet, dont be expecting to own a turbo car and be able to have it insured and drive it before you are 25, any insurance company with a brain wont touch you with a barge pole, and if you do find one that will, you'll probably be paying more for insurance per year than you did for the car itself |

but yes they are common... s13's rock... only tried out a CA18DET, but man for a 1.8ltre engine it flys... I know for a fact no standard commie would stand a chance against it... either would any car that german pretends he has! |

ok.
let me first state that i'm not some narrow minded fool who thinks fords suck, holdens "rul" and everything else is "gay" however.. you've got to look at it this way.. some people can't AFFORD a silvia but they can afford a boggadore. take me for example. I have 10k to spend. roughly. maybe a little over that but i sure as hell won't be buying some s***box and ricing it <- waste of money. and i sure as hell won't be buying a vl commodore <- i think my f***ing DOG owns one they're so common and slow. and for gods sake.. i don't feel like working my ass off to keep a car so i won't be buying a skyline or a silvia (even if i could be f***ed saving more for one) <- waste of my time solution? i'm gonna morph myself into one of those wankers that drives a 2 door 96+ body lancer .. green or red.. with about 2k to spend on a stereo. :) |

What s***s me in these 4 v 8 debates is the fact that most of the fast 4's have the absolute bejeezus tuned out of them in the way of turbos/cams/bored/etc and then proceed to claim that they are sooo much quicker than stock/slightly modded v8's.
If you took a decent stock 4 and a decent stock 8 (say, the 5.7L from the new holdens) and spent the same amount of money on both I'd like to see which one is quicker... /me retreats into fireproof bunker |

i can tell you now my current car sr20det 180sx is just about as fast as a HSV Clubsport R8(255kw motor)
the good thing about turbocharged 4's is for a relatively small investment you can make huge gains in power(with filter/exhaust/intercooler and upped boost) whereas in a V8 it requires more expensive parts to improve the engine ontop of what it already is |

Stu, right on. I own a 180sx with a few mods and the car can beat practically anything on the road, except a few rotors. Forced induction is the way to go. I've got a high 12 second car with 16k spent all up, including insurance and mods. Now where you can get an Australia car for that price that will hammer down the quarter at that speed? The japs know their s***.

Thats right its the biggest s*** heap i've ever seen in my entire life. Youre a moron mick and youre speaking out of your anus. Simple mods such as weight reductions, exhaust, hi flow air filter, boost control and a car that weighs less than 1200 kgs and it will go down the the quarter in under 13.

i reckon if these 2 motors had sex they woudld create the SUPER ENGINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! well in theory a big V8 engine or any cylinder based engine for that matter is just the same as a 4 cylinder just with more cylinders which equate to more engine volume so it is quite possible to turbo/super charge a bigger engine. well there are turbo 4 cyl and 6 cyl so it should be possible for 8 or 10 or 12, maybe the ferarri engines are turbo?? i dont know anyone clarify that? i dont know why its not done maybe there is a reason or itd just be insanely fast or the power gain wasnt really worth the money only thing i could think of is that bigger engines start off slower and if u want an acceleration machine a 4 cyl turbo would get off the mark quicker than an 8cyl turbo and the higher speeds the 8 could reach would be too far down the track past the finish line. |

Of course you can turbo any engine... ffs man you know nothing at all.... and Ferrari's? Of course not!! How dare you comment if you don't even know that? ANd just cos an engine has more capacity doesn't make it better in any way... there are MILLIONS of other factors like head design, induction etc etc. Japanese cars = awesome. Euro cars = DA BEST!!! Aussie cars s*** boxes that fall apart, American cars are far worse than Aussie cars! If you don't like Japanese cars you are a complete and utter deads*** and have no right to comment. |

well its pretty easy to work out that you can turbo any sized engine, OR kind of engine for that matter,
to what i understand turbocharging is fuel injection using the exhaust gases which can get that fuel into the cylinders very quickly and under pressure more of it will go in, hence why turbo cars eat more fuel than naturally aspirated ones but the question remains, why arent there any turbo 8 cyl? can u answer that anarot? is the power gain just not worth it? |

Acutally turbos just blow air into the induction system and to keep the air/fuel ratio correct more fuel has to be injected by the injectors/fuel induction system. Bloody editing poof!! :P there are turbo V8s. Maserati has/had them, and there are tonnes of guys twin turboing Holden V8s and the like around Australia. s*** loads of power and MOUTAINOUS torque! Problems are finding gearboxes to handle the torque and the cost of building the induction systems cos they are more complex due to more cylinders needing fuel. Bentley used a Turbo V8 in their performance versions. It works awesomely! But the problem is the size of the motor - the car has to be huge to handle the physical size of the motor (except the Maserati's which use small capacity V8s). Turbos are good cos they give more torque (and power of course) to smaller engines whereas bigger engines produce torque easier without turbo. That is a basic answer to your question anyway. Smart - Volvo is long gone :( I miss it but I have an N14 Pulsar with SR20DE now :) It feels like if I hit anything it'll disintegrate compared to the Volvo but it goes hard and handles better (although I hate front drive) so its cool. |

but why no turbo 8's!???
ah i have done my research :) turbos use the exhasut gases to spin the lil turbine dooby which in turn blows air into the induction system pressurising it allowing more air to be jammed into the cylinders and then the oxygen sensor goes lotsa air!! need more fuel and puts in more fuel. Extra fuel and air in the cylinders results in more power. and also seeing you are using exhaust gases it makes the wee lil turbo hot and thats where the intercooler comes in, stealing the hot air and cooling it down again so mr turbo doesnt go MELLLLTY basically it is an uberfied fuel injection system. |

As if turbo on an 8, put a supercharger on it... With the 8 cylinders you can afford the power consumed by the supercharger itself and you don't have to wait for higher RPM's like with a turbo.
Also, I thought we all learnt not to have car threads ?!?! |

ferraris are already highly tuned engines with already high compressions, if u try to force induction things like heads, break.

The lotus espirit has a twin turbo v8
it's not unheard of, it's just less common. prolly because v8 engines are far more expensive to manufacture than 4 cylinder ones. If you have a look at the price of engines you can buy, you'll notice that 4 cylinder engines such as the sr20 really very cheap indeed. It just makes so much sense, big power at a low price. like anarot said you need a big car to handle a massive engine. the amount of fule you use in a big v8 is bad enough as it is, put turbos on a massive v8 and you'll use even more, it gets rediculous, and then the car is so damn big. all you have is a big car that mat have s***loads of power, but is so heavy that it goes just as fast as a smaller sports car except... it's way more expensive in every way. doesn't make much practical sense, unless you just desperately have to fit your extended family in the back. Most people who want a fast car aren't interested in having a large one. |

Spook it wasn't dodgy Italian body!! How can you say that!! It was a Giaccotolo, a modified Alfa Romeo shell and looked beautiful!! That car was one of the most awesome things I've ever seen, save for the Holden badge on the engine...... Had he used a Lexus Quad cam instead then *OMFG SPOOT* Eye Kandy don't be gay! If there is one thing I hate it is f*****s who have an opinion bit no knowledge to back it up, so stop defending your bum-buddy! |

but why no turbo 8's!??? Actually, the way I came to believe it (my own logic)... V8's are supercharged because the supercharge is constant... Now, a lil' 4 cyl generally has a wider-range of RPM's than a big 8, so it can be "up on the rev's" more, thus the turbo can spin up harder (yes exhaust emissions are used to spin the turbine in a turbo)... Now, this is all great and all and does actually work on a V8, but why be "up on the rev's" on a v8 when they have such awesome amounts of torque even at the low RPM's? This I think is the driving reason to supercharging rather than turbo'ing... 8's are genereally used for their phenomenal BHP [Break Horse Power]. Supercharging works at all RPMS including while idling. Which mean's that big V8 can just give it the go from the beginning and produce even more torque and usability of its power, especially at the low RPMS (which 4 cyls are not gifted with, their best torque occurs, I think usually/generally at a realatively much higher RPM)... So while V8's can be turbo'd, it would seem more preferable to supercharge them, (as explained, giving greater power at the already advantaged low-rpms, combined with generally not red-lining as high.. the bigger it is, the slower it turns :D) |

Not all 8's have torque down low, Ferrari's for example... you are just talking about the s***test V8's on the planet, the ones made in American and Australia.... Ferrari, BMW, Toyota, Maserati etc etc V8s rev just as good as your average 4 cylinder. Turbos are usually used because they take up less space than a f***ing huge 6/71 blower that would be needed to produce the same horses. (I'm talking road cars here... if you wanna talk drag cars its a whole different story, but who the f*** here drives a drag car?). |
