I'm sure the majority of the people who put down "Jedi" as their religion did it as a joke. Basically to take the piss out of the Government. Jesus, get a sense of humour people. Oh, and religion takes cock. |

Give them a break fools. Those people who did put it down seriously have every right to. You know, freedom of religion? I wish them the best of luck, they have just as much right to follow thier beleifs without persecution as christians or muslims. Ill be damned if id ever join an organised regilion of any description, but I dont begrudge the Jedi for thiers.

Well you figure it, if they gave the jedi guys 150 billion dollars they could build a death star which doubled as a detention centre, as well as a place to put all those troublesome bulldogs players. As well as anybody who has spent more than 2 days in the media spotlight, this includes those guys who were rescued from that mine-shaft and a whole lot of other people.
Somebody think of the children. |

I put none down as my religion.
Jedi has eveything that a religion needs, right down to a cool story. If people are willing to live by the Jedi code as Christians should live by the bible then let them. As a religon I rekon Jedi has got alot of things covered. So while you people call them geeks and idiots, I call them Jedi, because guess what, they are now. |

I put down Jedi in all my families religion (I did the census for everyone), not because I'm serious about it, but because I think religions in general are a joke and I'm going to treat the question about them as one too. I don't even think Jedi is a religion in Star Wars, but more of a government organisation like the FBI that has a particular code of ethics.

This is what I don't understand.. What is there possibly to gain from filling out the census incorrectly? It doesn't earn you a bag of money or anything, but it can disadvantage people in your area.. Why fill out incorrectly? to look cool to mates? make a Huge political statement?

I think i once heard that if in a census 50000 people choose a religion it becomes an official religion in this country.
Which means they can apply for subsidies and rates cuts for land and buildings and can apply for religious holidays to be avialable as days off for employees. And wouldn't they get tax breaks and charity recognition and stuff? There could be a real financial boon for them. As a Jedi knight one must not work more then 4 standard republic days in any 7 standard republic days (a standard republic week). No religious discrimination allowed when going for a job and you get it. Then start on Tuesday with the above reason. You can't get fired :) I'll join :) |

The point is I would put down any minority faith or non-religion, because it does represent me just as if I had answered truthfully.

That would assume I'm a Christian though. My answer could be anything in such a circumstance.
Nevertheless the social implication of me saying I belong to minority religion X (my own beliefs or whatever) to minority religion Y (jediism) are the same, since I'm not part of the major influential Christian "denominations". In reality the religions other than the ones that make up the majority are just there so that people don't feel left out and discriminated against - our vote (?) doesn't affect anything. |

Why is the information incorrect? It is showing that 70,000 people would rather choose Jedi religion then the others, that says something.
UK says that the Censes is only a tool to see what answers people put down for a particular question and to count those answers. It does not validate any religons. Also the Religion question is the one question that cannot be fined.
It wont go ahead because the censes dosnt valid religions... |

No, I understand what religion means - it's something created to prevent people from realising that they are insignificant, disposable and part of nature. If we had no religion, no concept of god, people would soon go crazy due to lack of hope or meaning.

Ha it's funny that you guys mention that it f***s up the funding cause I think poseurs (e.g. people who say their christians but haven't been to church for 20 years and that was cause their parents made them) would also f*** it up. Thus christian's get more funding than they deserve and throw their weight around more than they should. So I don't really care.

why can't I create a cult of the CS haters You can. You can put that down as your religion. If you spend more time thinking about hate and counter-strike than praying to Jesus, then you may well have justified your faith. and instantly CS players are blown off the face of the earth by whatever means I happen to make up? i think you do either that or the government just assumes that most people under the age of 18 still live at home so their mum or dad would fill it out.
easiest way to get out of doing the census make sure on the night you are at someone else's house so they have to include you on their form and you don't have to do it. lol |

How can people claim it screwed up the census? Hell, I don't think there are really 12.8 million serious christians in Australia. Voting "christian" is every bit as much a donkey vote for many people as voting "jedi".
And as for needing x number of votes then it officially gets recognised as a religion - sorry that's just not true. To get a religion officially recognised takes a lot more than that. Which in turn means that it doesn't really disadvantage the "poor needy christians" out there (or whatever religion cult you belong to). And honestly subsidies for religion - piss off! What a bloody stupid idea. Just because someone says they're catholic they don't deserve any more money than someone who is an athiest. I'd rather see a big investigation into all the subsidies and whatnot that organised religion gets. Might stop the catholic church paying hush money to the families of altar boys they've abused. |

If we're disadvantaging other religions in some way well tough s*** to them. I get really annoyed by bible bashes that come to my door to "preech the good word of the lord" they're wasting my time in doing it. I personally didn't write down Jedi, I chose catholic although realistically I should have said athiest. But I have no problem with all the people who did choose Jedi!
I'm betting Jerds did! |

religions created by George lucas dont fall under that clause Bulls***. To begin with, they dont beleive in starship, lightsabres or any of that crap. The beleive in the ideals of the jedi order, resisting temptations like greed, hate etc. Read their site. Secondly, what makes the jedi any different from any other religion, aside from their relatively recent birth. Ive said it before and ill say it again, people in this country have the right to beleive in whatever the f*** they want to beleive in, and morons like you cant stop them, thankfully. I think i once heard that if in a census 50000 people choose a religion it becomes an official religion in this country Not true. When I was researching my feature article on the Jedi I cam across several quotes from the census beareu refuting this. I'm noticing most of the people defending putting Jedi down as a religion have alternating caps in their name, or stupid names with ascii characters, or a stupid sig... could this possibly be saying something about thier maturity level? You sir, are a f***ing moron. Personally, I think they are a lot better than some of the other bats*** insane 'religions' out there. *cough* Scientology *cough*. At least they beleive in something worthwhile, self improvement with a strong moral code. What more do you need a religion. |
