I use one. I bought a Winfast ATA100 model (now living in Ember's machine) for about $50 from the PC Markets nsome time back. Very handy thing to have. I ditched it after 6 months, then soon found the need for one again.

:/

I now use a generic, yum-cha brand (ST Labs) for my DVD-Rom. It works well, but I'd never run my primary drive off it as it just isn't that efficent. It cost about $35.

yer I guess you'd expect some pretty decent data transfer from a promise with good drivers loaded.

A shame the Winfast nor the STLabs didn't deliver.

The Promise raid controller delivers, but it'll be a few weeks until my old Barracuda 4's are replaced for the new raid-compat vers so I'll have to wait for the test results.

At this point a single WD 80Gig (8MB cache) out-performs the raid setup that was in my puter.

:(

Will using an add-in card get around the 8 gig limitation of older BIOSs?

you need the latest drivers for your Promise. It is the better of the two, hence I ditched the Winfast and went looking for better. I found IDE raid :)

People still sell ATA100 ide controllers? or will nobody take them off their hands for them :P

you'd think so.

mmmmmmm, more faster

but she ain't.

the controller runs my ata66 dvd-rom nicely though :)

I still wouldn't run an OS drive from it. too slow.
