Someone posted on /. that John Carmack talks a bit about OpenGL 2.0 implementation in Doom3 in his .plan. Anyway it's an interesting read and good to hear that someone is pushing a non-proprietary Graphics Library. Thanks to John and the good people at Bioware the two most promising games coming up will have NATIVE LINUX BINARIES (huzzah?). Also with those hawt driver coding ninjas at Nvidia making excellent (though closed source) drivers for Linux it looks like the day that Linux becomes a viable gaming platform is close to hand.

Until linux has directx support and widespread support for all hardware (video and sound and input controllers), then it wont be a viable gaming platform.

OpenGL is a widely adopted standard. So Direct3d isnt really needed. What is needed is audio and input standards imo.

I think Carmack ought to be congratulated for using OpenGL. Not only that he provides a good role model for future game programmers.

well there's already a set of opensource games librariers for linux called SGL or SDL (i can never remember). I think the fact that ID can consistently produce top notch games using non-proprietary libraries should make the other developers question why they don't?
I agree stuff like drivers for controllers are hard but you'll often find that a lot of that stuff is handled by 3rd party hacks in linux. |

OpenGL is a widely adopted standard. So Direct3d isnt really needed Thats all good for future games, but what about the hundreds of games out now that need directx/direct3d to run? Until linux can support all those games too, theres no way I'd use it as my desktop operating system. |

The fact that Max Payne uses D3D was a BIG downfall imo. Sure the game is great but D3D is far too CPU intensive (compared to OpenGL) and this isn't helped by the fact that the videocard market is tending towards taking the load off the CPU.

i'm not convinced it's DX that's CPU-bound. I have a feeling it's got more to do with lazy programming. Something Carmack tends not to do...
