i think they are doing the whole linear velocity thing with cdburners now.
basically it doesn't actually burn 48 times faster than a 1 times, only during the very first period of burning, or the very end. i can't remember which. where as 24x is actually 24x faster than 1x. |

I would think that a 48x burner would be faster in theory, but good luck finding media that supports 48x, I have a 20x ricoh MP7200a, best thing I ever bought, It has never made a coaster, but... when I bought it, it was the first burner model over 20x in Australia... and media didn't become available mainstream for about 6 months... it was all 16x...
now there are 24x media available... but anything over 24x your going to be disapointed when you cant burn at top speed... I am not saying that you should buy an out of date burner, and I have heard that Liteon are excellent. But I am saying from experience that it is disapointing when you have to burn below the max speed your burner can do. What method does the Liteon use? Z-CLV or P-CAV??? (i doubt that a 48x burner would burn at 48x for very long...) |

there is about 2 - 4 seconds diffrence between 24x 32x atm, but say in about 6 months time when 32 are more common it should be about 10seconds faster, in reality it has gotten about as fast as you need it to be, till you can burn 700mb in a few seconds you wont need anything for a few years. but that doesnt mean you should buy the faster one.

You'll find most brand-name PCs have Lite-on drives in them, Especially IBM.
I've also heard (HEARD) that Lite-on make sony's Cd drives - The guy who told me is 99% full of s***, but can anyone confirm this? |

I dont know of any firmware upgrade that does that. Just about any Brisbane store can get the Liteon 48X drives at the moment. All you have to do is ask.

yeah... lite-ons are pretty good, im stuck with my 6x4x32 ricoh at the moment :( (got it ages ago when burners where really expensive/new) my friend just purchased one about 1 1/2 months ago, a 24x one and he cant stop going on about it. I am probably going to get a 48x one soon theyre soooo bloody cheap now, i could pay just over a game price and pick one up (looks back at paying around $550 for the ricoh) i also read a few reviews on them and all ive heard is good news so i dont see any reason not to go for one (/stab my friend and run off with his) |

and can anyone confirm liteon are just rebadged sonys? they most definately aren't rebadged sony's, they have much more features than sony burners (overburn springs to mind). I don't know why they are cheaper. But they have been in the industry for ages, as an OEM supplier. And many other companies distribute rebadged LITEON burners. |

you wont notice a huge speed difference, just like when using a 32x speed cdrom drive and a 52x.
They do the speed rating from the outermost ring of the disc, not the inside ring where it is smallest. So you only really see such a high speed for the short amount of time that you actually burn to that part of the disc. That said liteon burners rule:) |

CDR Info has a good article about PCAV -v- ZCLV that explains how it works and why some burners aren't really as fast as they're rated. Simply the disc burns at different speeds depending on what part of the disc is being written to - so it might write 25% of the CD at 16 speed, 25% at 24 speed 25% at 32 speed and 25% at 48 speed (or other variations). Unfortunately the article is a little out of date and only tests 20x and 24x burners but the explanations are sound.
You might also want to check out a couple other sites for articles and reviews on the burners and check out their dedicated CDR/RW forums. CD-RW.ORG CD FREAKS |

Incidentally CD Freaks has a good review of the Liteon Burners. I linked straight to the results page cos it shows some tests with alternative firmware that are pretty impressive. And it also goes on the show write quality tests with different types of media - it's well worth checking out.
