Some irreplaceable Christmas photos were ruined when other photos were taken over the same film recently, here's what I mean: http://members.optushome.com.au/scythe1o1/photo.jpg As you can see, the two different layers are fairly distinct, and I was wondering how I would go about removing the top one. I have no idea where to start. EDIT: Here's a better quality version (140KB). |

It would be pretty difficult as it is a photo which has one layer if ya know what I mean, not a digital image which can have multiple layers 'n shiz... |

u'd have to manually recreate whats under it so it would never be back to what it should be, no where near it |

I'm assuming that the photo looked exactly like that. If that is the case, to my knowledge photoshop can't help you cause it's a straight image. You can't exactly remove parts of the unwanted image, "revealing" bits of the wanted image because they are just not there anymore. The best you could do is erase bits of the unwated image, draw the new gaps in manually (or use some filters to "close" the gaps). Use tools under the edit menu to modify the brightness of the left hand side to match the right hand side or vice versa. I'm pretty sure that's the best you can do with Photoshop. I'm not sure if photo developers have other methods of saving your photo. Like using your negatives etc. Gluck. I'm not sure if there is some kind of advanced feature in Photoshop though that may kinda help. I doubt you will ever get your photo back to what it should have been. |

I realise it's difficult to see there, but the image on top is actually entirely transparent, everything underneath can be seen. All I want to do is remove it. Thanks for your suggestions. |

It may look transparent but it's not as it is a flattened image. There is nothing underneath it. You can smudge the surroundings etc. to make it porper but you can't lighten/erase just the unwanted image as they are both the "same" image. Pixels only have a certain value. If i made an image in photoshop that consisted of a blue square on layer 1, with a red rectangle on layer 2. Layer 2 being in front of Layer 1. And layer 2 i made it 50% translucent then moved it over the blue square. I would get another colour. If i then flattened the image it would stay that way. There is no way i can retrieve the pure blue square anymore. (unless i go back in the history but that ain't counted) The hardest bit would be erasing the tag as it is quite "opaque". (remember it's just one flat image) It's the same with your photo as i understand it. See where that baby's face is. I could never retrieve it's left section to what it was meant to be before another photo was taken over it. Though you can always hope for an advanced option in photoshop that not many ppl know of? |

All I can say is adjust levels... that and lots and lots of clone stamping... No easy way out of this one. |

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for Russ. Surely there's some filter that can identify what's "underneath" and reconstruct it as accurately as possible. There should be enough for it to work with, as there is obvious continuity of lines and colour. I guess what I was saying was too literal. |

clone stamping would be amusingly long, tedious and difficult :) Yeah as i said, the tag would be very hard even for an advanced filter to do. It's basically opaque. |

I looks gay because you can only make 1 colour transparent and there is some dark grey etc. |

Yeh you can get rid of it. If they can f'n make dinosaurs come to life in movies, anyone who is *pretty damn good* at photoshop could remove it. Like people have said it isn't like simply deleteing the top layer (der freddy) but with some tweaking here and there it could be done. |

go away russ :) and re: original post, the only way to rid somthing like that is to manual redraw the photo, there is no real way around somthing like that, especialy with those white highlights, you could try darking just the white areas, but i will look all washed out and blury. |

Anyway regarding the photo, I've had a similar experience withmy camera doing something like this on a regular basis... It'd actaully take 49 shots on a 36 exposure film. Of course many of them were layered on top of on another... Had one where 4 photos were on the same frame of film, and since those 4 were actaully taken on a tripod with different people for each shot, we had a some freaky ghost effect on it... |

I dont see how that would be possible, unfortunately. That would be like painting a wall in your house and painting over it with another colour, then trying to remove the second colour without touching the first. Its a poor analogy, because this scenario would have two separate layers, but you get the idea. As scuzzy said(paraphrased), any individual pixel can only be one colour, and the only way out thatI can see is to take the negatives to someone and hope they can sort it out, but I dont see how that would be possible either. |

ffs. it can be done. at least a little better. i don't own photoshop so i can't do it. but all one must do is "equalize" it. it seems the "graffiti layer" is mostly similar to an alpha layer, so equalling the brightness, while it won't fix it, it'll make it look a lot better. although, the solid white parts may not - it appears that they are solid white. ------------------------------------ ok. here's my verdict, final one that is. you can get parts of the image back, but where the graffiti is solidly white? nope. lost. there is no colour info see. but you can still make it look better, but it's still ruined. unless someone takes artistic license and "recreates" what was there, using some tricky ps s***. it could be done, but altogether touchy and time consuming. |

Actually, it would mostly be copying parts of the image to fix up other parts. Level adjustments will only get you so far, you will not get the original image, but that has been, in a sense, mostly redrawn... |

rodolphe, with the trans gif, make the background a completely distinct colour like bright green or pink etc instead of black, then choose that colour to be transparent. |
