everything is determined by past events, what happens in the past controls the future, whether you like it or not. your decisions are based on past events, thus there is a 'fate' of sorts, but it is impossible to predict it, how does chaos relate the past events into future events? noone knows, but you can easily backtrack to see how past events have affected current events etc

say i got burnt by fire as a child, my future decisions will be affected by that one event. thus every event, no matter how minor, affects the future. even if it is as simple as ebing 2 seconds late at a traffic lights. if you were in a shielded bubble, and watched two points in time, it would be very likely that a small seemingly insignificant event would alter the course of history in a way we have never seen. what if osamas daddy never met osamas mummy, because of a half a second gap somewhere... the possibilities are endless.

im not saying predetermination from God, im saying events are governed by the past, thus your future is directly affected from your past.

Of course if you want to follow some of your theories, you could think that ever since the beginning of time (a curious idea in itself), the first interaction between whatever particles/energies were there had a fixed outcome and ever since then the same rules of the universe have resulted in an entirely determinate universe where you cannot really change anything since right down to the smallest components making up your brain cells you have no other choice but to follow those rules.
Then you might think that really consciousness is nothing more than some creation that causes humans to 'think' that they are above other animals and so create the separation that drives the human race on, consciousness also having the effect that you again 'think' that the things you do are actually under your control when in fact they are just predetermined by the above said rules of the universe.

im basically saying that there is a 'fate-like / determination-like theory, that is more scientifically explained through chaos theory, if i remember rightly (been a while since i concentrated on this stuff)

in a nutshell, your future depends on your past. you may think you are controlling it, but it is the past which controls you, which controls the future.

can you look in the mirror and say " i am here today the way i am because of the choices i made in my life"

i believe ina relative 'soul' may not in the pure religious context, but near enough (maybe ill explain this later sometime) and thus, a consciousness, we make conscious decisions, but these have been affected by our previous experiences. yes, we all have a chance to change the world, but its not as simple as free choice, its already governed.

destiny is a fools paradise, as is fate, (slightly different) as is predetermination.

all im talking about is the future directly being affected by the past, resulting in a certain path your life will take, you have to make those decisions, but they will be etermed by your experiences.

I think what Tung is saying is your choices you make today, are governed by the experiences you had yesterday.... and since the future is determined by the choices you make, the future is controlled by the past..

an example off the top of my head:-

If I burn myself by jumping into a fire yesterday, and I see that fire again today, my decision to not jump in/jump in, will be influenced by my experiences I had yesterday... if it hurt alot and you dont want that pain again, then your decision will be to not jump in the fire....
Does not necessarily have to be the same fire, it could be a burning house, and you need to run through a burning doorway to save your arse and get out, but you can't run through it because of fear from previous experiences, thus the house collapses on you and you die....
I cant think of a decent way of putting it, so if you don't understand what I'm trying to get at (whether it be right or wrong), then you need to be back in school =P

Considering that everything is effected by the previous moment in time you could assume that The moment of the Big Bang predetermined the universe, and set everything up. One thing effects another, which effects another... right down to the 'choices' you make..

If there is no Free will, then fate does exist. As fate is just the universe continueing its plans that were created during the big bang.
