So you have to give a 10-15 minute presentation in front of ~50 complete strangers on any topic of your choosing, what topic do you go with?

Literally any topic you like, but best to avoid religion, politics and sex.

I remember talking about the topic of public speaking. It went down well. Everyone can relate and it makes a good ice breaker in itself.

Otherwise, choose something you are passionate about, so you can be emotive and honest.

You can also choose something possibly in the backs of peoples' minds; gun control, police brutality, revenue raising, school systems, etc, etc.

Your audience is an important factor, accommodate them.

Mrs Pinky bought me an AWESOME coffee table book for the good Lord's birthday in the year 2009 AD. It's a massive book with famous battles with photos and maps of how the battle occurred and so on. Seriously good read.

Seven just reminded me of an awesome saying I heard at a wedding speech a while ago:

A good speech is like a mini-skirt. Long enough to cover the important parts, but short enough to be interesting. -- you can open with that, and thank me later.

off topic but, I like these types of books. Except compliations only ever give a superficial account of the events. You really need a book per event.

Back to topic: internet filter.

A good speech is like a mini-skirt.

A good speech could be about mini-skirts, you'd need a room with power point capabilities.

Hehe, at the start say, "For reference here's a mini-skirt" and put up a photo.

"And another one..." and put up another photo.

Do that for 10-15min and watch the crowd go from excited to very very bored. Would be awesome to film.

I would talk about anthropomorphism coming into reality with more people buying stupid things for their pets. It leaves a huge market for inventing dumb things for animals e.g. a dog phone, books for cats, ferret wheelchairs etc.

Is this toastmasters or a school project?
How could you have to give a presentation that was random topic?
If school project try to give a presentation about something really unusual and you may stand out.
I know someone who did the monsoon patterns of India and got a high mark in her tertiary course.
Toastmasters - make them laugh make them cry give them something to ponder.

I'm 28 and did toastmasters in 1996 and finished school in 1998!

This is the last step in a very weird selection process for a senior position at a financial institution I applied for a while back.

I'd talk about Single Malt Whisky. If you talk about the different regions and how each region has its own unique characteristics, the legislation to protect the "Scotch" label etc, you could *EASILY* blow through 15 minutes. Plus, you could even toss in something about how Bonnie Prince Charlie's favourite breakfast consisted of a pottage of oats (kinda like rolled oats), clotted cream and Drambuie (a scotch liqueur). Finish with, "sure beats Weetbix for breakfast, doesn't it?".

I'd say it's fairly relevant if it's a senior sales and/or marketing position, they want to know if he can handle talking in front of large groups, which is essential in such an environment.

no, I'm the last candidate left and this is the final 'hoop'.

I think its a bit dumb that I have to do it, as my background pretty much confirms that presentations are a skill I have and it would have been obvious in the million interviews so far.

sure, but I've been interviewed 4 times, for a total of nearly 6 hours - you think they could work out a bit from that don't you?

Sure, make me do the presentation, but don't tell me you've eliminated all the other candidates first.
