Anyone sick of this 'meme' s***?
I know I am.

Back in the day when the Internet wasn't just a stupid fad for 12 year old who like dragonballz when something awesome got sent round the net, it is because everyone loved it and it was genuinely awesome. We didn't even know the word 'meme' and we didn't strive to make something so common till we got sick of it.

Nowadays we have these 'meme factories' full of kids that pump out these stupid ideas that nobody gets, and try to force them onto people in as many places as they can. It's not a meme because 50 children decided they liked it and started repeating it over and over again, thats just s*** kids do. I'm talking about 4chan and that sort of s***. You don't take a running joke from one community and try to write it into history as something that swept across the world.

I see these 'know your meme' videos and articles in Encyclopedia Dramatica that describe various memes about obscure anime s*** and the likes, and I have never heard of this stuff. I am on the god damn internet every day on forums, email, youtube, digg, and I have never heard of most of this crap. Someone just decided that they like something, it's a meme. f*** offff. I don't even like the word meme. Giving it a word means it's something people will go out of their way to 'achieve'.

The other day I was reading about Michael Scott from The Office and the description was like "He uses old memes like 'lame'". What the f***. Since when is a word a meme?

This meme s*** needs to stop!

The word meme isn't something that was invented to describe internet fads. From wikipedia:

A meme is a postulated unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes, in that they self-replicate and respond to selective pressures.

The British scientist Richard Dawkins introduced the word "meme" in The Selfish Gene (1976) as a basis for discussion of evolutionary principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena. Examples of memes given in the book included melodies, catch-phrases, beliefs (notably religious beliefs), clothing fashion, and the technology of building arches.

There are genuine memes and forced memes. Forced memes is when all the b tards get together to make something a meme, and its never funny. Real memes can be a source of great hilariry.

But memes come from all sorts of places, and forums are just a method of propagation. The bigger the forum, the faster it propagates. Thats why 4chan seems like it generates the memes, when in fact it was probably created somewhere else.

The internet is still new enough to a some people that the sensation of shared experience of similar fads/trends/jokes across the planet is still an amusing/exciting thing

A meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/, rhyming with "cream"[1]) is a postulated unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. (The etymology of the term relates to the Greek word μιμητισμός (pronounced /mɪmetɪsmos/) for "something imitated".)[2] Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes, in that they self-replicate and respond to selective pressures.[3]

See, how hard is it to do that.

Really? How many times did you see dancing baby then or people speaking leet with the emergence of the modern interbutts. Pretty sure anyone who paid attention in high school english knows what a meme is, it's not just an internet thing (see: mad propz).

Your post reads like, "back in my day we were too stupid to call stuff memes and always believed the taco bell dog would run across the screen if you sent it to 50 other people. Now it's getting popular I don't like it anymore, damn kids used to know not to come onto my lawn."

Do you also stop liking music purely on the basis of how popular it is?

Slow down there exemplar. It's not an issue of popularity.

At all.

The Ally McBeal baby was genuinely impressive, I had the f***ing screen saver. Everyone loved that s***.
That's like saying the Mona Lisa is a meme, or Die Hard 4 is a meme. It's not a meme, it's art that people like.

Using leet speak, or saying lol isn't a meme either, that is just the language of the Internet.

There still are plenty of popular funny things that get sent around that I have no problem with.

dont fall out boy have a song called 'thanks for the memes' and they sing :-
"thanks for the memories even thought they werent that great"?
and even though it should be
"thanks for the cash, even though we aint that great",
i thought that this would make the term popular as they appear to be a popular band once upon a time.

Back on the OP I'm not sure how you can be 'sick' of memes? As a lot of peeps in this thread pointed out, it's not exactly invasive. Just change the internet locations where you choose to roll if you're over it.

I'm sick of the idea of memes. And I am sick of the websites that seem to just pump out memes like they're sausage links. And then call stuff memes that aren't, some are developments in language (like props), or in-jokes that don't spread very far. Too much meme... ing.
And then people find out something is a meme and want to meme it up even more.

We don't have to talk about this anymore, I am sick of hearing myself think about memes.

Ack, beaten by Khel.

But yeah, I'm sick more sick of people talking about memes without understanding the basics of memetics. A meme is basically the mental equivalent of a gene. So every little kernel of knowledge, experience and the like in your brain is part of the memetic fabric which makes up who you are as a person, just like the genes in your DNA produce who you phsyically are.

Internet fad would be a more correct term to describe lolcats and mudkips.

Edit:
religion is the greatest meme of all

LOL. I loved how Neil Stephenson described religion. He labeled Judaism as a first neurolinguistic virus. A person contracts the religion from the Torah, is told to pass it on to their descendants and make a duplicate of the Torah. Passes on just like a virus.
