Hey I know some of you have some mad skillz with the turntables and what-not. I went to a party last night and had hours of fun using this guy's turntables and the girls went crazy for my Britney Spears playlist so I'm looking at getting myself a similar setup just to muck around with at home.

He had 2 turntables, a mic, awesome software - he said you can download it but you need a box to actually make it work (and he pointed at this thing which looked like an RCA switch box of some sort) and he also had the amplifier thing in the middle for crossfading etc.

Anyone have any good suggestions as to what equipment I need? The best place to get it from? What to avoid? How much an average setup is going to cost me? etc.

Greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the dude was using a Traktor Scratch or Serato setup. It's definitely the way to go if you want to use the vinyl turntables (which chicks dig). It's the package that includes the software, hardware switch box, and timecoded vinyl so you can scratch and mix mp3s as if they were actual records.

I got Traktor Scratch Pro, 2 x Technics 1200 and Pioneer DJM800 mixer all in a roadcase so I can just roll up and rock a par-tay.

I would definitely try and get your hands on a pair of 1200s as they are perfection and the standard of turntables. Apparently Technics have stopped making them earlier this week, so they're probably gonna be a bit more expensive now.

For the digital vinyl system I prefer Traktor over Serato but they are both pretty much the same. Traktor has heaps more effects and advanced features though. I reckon its interface s***s on Serato's too.

You might be able to get a full setup (second hand) for around $2500-3000 but probably with a less high-end mixer. You would only need a pretty basic 2 channel. Check out a Numark DXM06, they are easy to learn on and have heaps of effects to muck around with.

Spin that shiiit.

and the girls went crazy for my Britney Spears playlist ----- WTF?

All that aside, pretty much everyone would suggest technic's turntables (1200's,) i dont mix with turntables tho, i use a Behringer bcd 3000 and a laptop, but from what i've heard, they are the s***. alot of ur old skool Dj's use them ,
As for the software i use Trackor Pro, its strong and reliable
good luck and never mention Britney and mixing in the same sentence again !!

just buy two old technics mk1200 off ebay
try find someone who is selling their whole setup

i originally bought mine off ebay for like $600 and then they got pinched, insurance replaced them new-for-old so i ended up with some mk1210s which were the bomb

brand new out of the box with new needles and everything, I was like a kid at christmas

you'll want some sennheisers too eventually (awesome-o noise canceling headphones)

!!!!!!!!!!!STAY AWAY FROM NUMARC & CDJS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are f***ing horendouc. 1200 seem to be the norm anyone that uses vinyl will probably swear by them aslo stay away from belt driven turntables.

CDJS are the bombdiggity.
