Woke up at 5am to what sounded like a marble hitting fan blades.

Turned her off and got back to sleep, came home from work next day for further analysis. Turned her on and same noise then after a minute or two the loose object got jammed in something and there's been no noise since. However there is no cold air, just fan :(

The compressor still kicks in making a noise but no dice.

It's a Window/Wall Unit.

Is it worth getting looked at/re gassed (8 years old) or just buy a new one? and where can I get cheap aircons!

for a window job its not even worth it, you can pickup a brand new one for under $300 and chuck it in your self quite easily

Forgot to mention, I will be doing the installation myself.

I think just a new unit would be best. Where's the best places, good guys?

yeah good guys / clive peters - dunno where you live but over the northside theres a place next to carseldine bunnings and another just south on gympie road a bit more - on the left just before aspley maccas (next to lonestar)

I replaced one this year and I basically drove to one and got a price then visited the other stores with that price and whoever gave me the best price won

Any Air conditioning install guys on QGL? Wanted to find out if I have to run the power on an 8Kw unit to the main fuse box of the building or can It be run into the mini fuse boxes that are in the garage of all the units.

Saving up some money to get one installed next year unless I crack the s***s and try to get one installed this year.

usually big reverse cycle splits are run on their own circuit (at least in my experience)

with the window aircon, you wouldn't bother putting one in a room any bigger than a bedroom surely?
even the cheap $300 ones are fine for a big bedroom imo, we've got two in two rooms here and it has the room at temperature in 10 minutes

just remember in aircon terms hp to kw conversions are not the same as for cars
its something like 1hp = 2.6kw in aircon terms
as opposed to 1hp = .7something or so kw in car terms

I must've got ripped off then, I got a 1.5HP for a room about 3.5x4M and it sucked. Though the roof was quite high. We had to turn it on compressor test mode to make it run full time before it actually cooled the place, just turning it on max cool where the compressor kicked in and out wasn't enough. Mine was probably s***e, got it about 5 years ago from good guys.

sounds like condenser fan blade has busted to pieces.
in a window rattler they are both run off the same dual shaft motor.

bit of a bugger, what brand is it? i'll take it off ya if youre going to chuck it.

a lot of box ac's are no longer for sale because they dont meet the meps efficiency requirements. driving the price of the ones that do, up.

and yea shad an 8kw unit will need to be hardwired to the board with a 10 or 16amp breaker via an isolator near the outdoor unit (Y)
should be fine to run it off the mini-board.

or just go a smaller unit, 3~kw and just plug it into a GPO, much simpler and easier !

oh and syco if you had to turn it to 'compressor test' mode it means you have a t.stat problem and its not calling for cooling. older non-inverter ac's do not have any power level adjustment, only on/off control via the tstat.

weird, we've got 4 of them here (queenslander) and none of them were especially expensive but they all work really well

this room I'm in now is roughly 4x4 and its had the same crappy aircon for 5+ years
it will automatically and constantly run on compressor mode if the temp sensor is above the temp on the lcd
having direct sunlight and poor insulation or thin curtain/blinds etc makes a huge difference too

Yeah, I got no idea what was in the roof of our old place but the walls were 40cm thick concrete so I figured they'd hold heat/cool OK. Ahh well, we got a huge arsed one in this place now anyway.

We had a bloke come out and check it and he reckoned the thermostat was fine, replaced it anyway though so *shrugs*. It did kick in and out just not enough to keep the room feeling cooler then outside.

ahh, sensor bulb location possibly. picking up air that is too cold and cycling off early

I was hoping to also be able to open up my door and cool the rest of the unit at times so would still need something to cool down about 50m2 of space. I am just hoping the total cost comes in under 3k.

I put in a 3.5kw system for 1200 bucks, it does a 2 bedroom unit if you leave it for an hour or so (in summer)
