Sup

So I joined the fanclub and bought a MPB, though only to run Windows 7 really.

Two current problems:

Microphone doesn't want to co-operate, specifically in gotomeeting

FW800 Performance seems to be s***, using a Lacie D2 Quadra drive

Any tips and s***

Tip : Dont buy a mac.

Yes i had to be the wanker.

A quick google tells me : Lots of people had the same mic problem specifically using skype running windows 7 on a macbook pro. People reported other general mic issues running windows 7 on a mac using steam games and other applications. In short there is no quick or permanent fix. Seems apple have turned their nose at the issue.

Full details here

People had mixed success running VMware? People also reported mixed success trying a range of different drivers but it doesn't really fix your problem. Seems you may be stuck with this problem.

Edit : JMR also check this out. http://www.kombitz.com/2009/01/14/microphone-problem-under-windows-7-and-vista/

It points out some settings tweaking you might have missed.

VMWare doesn't even use the same hardware as if you install using bootcamp so it is hardly relevant

I am capable with google LACHLAN AND I DONT NEED YOU TO GIVE ME LINKS TO 21 PAGE THREADS JESUS f***

I really, really don't understand this action.

Sorry dude, but that's kind of wack - why for out for an Apple if you don't want OSX?!

Seems like a pretty dumb idea, you pay extra for a mac to get the integration of harware and software with osx, then you removed that, should have just got a dell studio XPS.

My dad got a new W7 HP computer and it still doesn't shut down fully. Both Vista on his old custom built computer and Windows 7 on this brand new HP get to the Shutting Down screen and just sit there... shutting down. Could be a crappy driver on both, or it could just be Windows.

I told him to just get a Mac, but he didn't want to dual boot. #windowssucks

Does the mic work in windows audio settings? Any problems in there? AFAIK gotomeeting will go through the windows api to get to the mic. If that works, try a flash app that utilizes mic to make sure. If both of those work, its a gotomeeting issue.

FW800 Performance seems to be s***, using a Lacie D2 Quadra drive

Apparently the microsoft drivers for FW800 are still slow on W7 (even though they rewrote the ieee1394 driver set) (windows has always underperformed with FW). Apparently W7 comes with 3 different compatible drivers for FW800, might be worth trying to switch to another (update drivers, choose from disk or whatever) and see if that speeds it up (try legacy).

I agree. Buy a mac for te mac-ness and just stick windows on it for the odd program. I just got myself one and I'm loving it, hangin out in osx right now in fact. I have windows on it but thus far mostly just put it there "because I can"

Buying a mac to just use windows on it is kinda silly. Yeah you get a quality computer but the OS is what makes the mac.

I agree while its silly, I still dual boot and my mac was cheaper than my dell XPS Studio 13 and runs faster than it. So really, it does KINDA make sense if you can get it cheaper.

You did install the bootcamp drivers and whatnot on windows 7 right?

It is dumb, OSX so far has been a much better OS than Windows and anything Windows-only (SQL Server, Visual Studio) that I've needed to run I've just run using Fusion.

Its possible (likely?) that Word etc. began as MacWrite or whatever back in the day on the old macs, and it wouldn't resemble whatever it was back then. I'd suspect that quality diffs in the products are more of an internal matter, as the MS business units are from memory pretty strongly separated.

After all, the Office mastermind was seconded to finally get Vista to RTM and then head up the Windows7 project[1] ...

So is your MBP better than your old XPS?

Which one did you get?

I still can't decide (MBP or Studio) :( Lucky I'm in no rush.

Very different

Mac is cuter, XPS was faster for Windows

XPS Had no f***ing battery life though which was the final straw

Wow, that sounds more like I'm trying to rape you than promote an OS.
