Adding to your weekend reading agenda here on AusGamers, we have our in-depth Borderlands review for your perusal.

For anyone who hasn't picked up the game yet through being unsure just what's on offer and if it's worth your hard-earned dollars, we break down the mechanics of both single-player and multiplayer, letting you know just what sort of experience you're in for.

One thing's for sure though, this is definitely one excellent foray into a new genre with the successful marriage of both RPGs and FPS' in one neat, easy to manage package.

Is there any randomness to it? Like with Diablo (and Diablo 2) for example, the story was totally linear and you'd go through the same areas each time you played, and do the same quests each time you played, but stuff would be in different places and things would be mixed up a bit. Does it have that sort of element to it, or is everything exactly the same every time you play through it again?

From the Wiki page:
As for the game world, Borderlands features a system that randomly instances the surrounding landscape, with randomly placed things such as bunkers, towers, caves, enemies, and exploding cacti. All of this is done without a loading screen. Gearbox claims that the player will not see a loading screen after they boot up the game, although this proved to be false; players will see them when changing areas. Core areas, such as towns, will remain the same throughout the game, as will the general paths that connect town to town.

the rpg element can be summed up pretty easily...
each class has a special move..
that move can be leveled.. so to speak...
for example.. roland has a turret with a small shield that you can drop during fights..
you can make the turret do more damage.. pulse an area of effect heal and an area of effect replenish amo after leveling the shield up some you get options to give it rockets and so forth.

doesn't seem much different than say the Engy in TF2, is that game an fps+rpg?

Yeah, you kill stuff and do quests that earn you xp, which levels you up and gives you skill points which you can spend in one of three different skill trees which give you new skills and change how your turret works. Just like the engineer in TF2.

In some ways it's even better on the second play through! Not scrounging for cash etc so I find it a lot more enjoyable. And everything is more challenging.

TF2 is actually pretty close to an RPS. It does a dice roll on every shot when "Damage Spread" is enabled doesn't it? Like on most pubs a rocket can do anywhere from 80% to 120% damage (not including crits) depending on random factors.

Just finished it last night, was good, as said in the review the story could have used a bit more tweaking and depth.

Also, to those who have played the majority of it, have you noticed a few of the 'boss' creatures' mouths oddly resemble the most terrifying variants of vaginas you've ever seen? 'i.e. Rakk Hive'

Has anyone come across any procedurally generated environments? From what I've seen so far, it doesn't look like there will be any.

Nope everything seems to be the same every time I go back there. On play through 2 and haven't noticed anything different in the environment yet.

I'm not even sure if I've seen any exploding cacti?!?!?

Yeah, it all seems the same to me too, and no exploding cacti to be found anywhere :(

Or you could play Borderlands, and everything else that comes in between now and the eventual release of D3, and enjoy exponentially more gaming goodness?
