Modern Warfare 2, in favor of weird Steam s*** and a matchmaking service, will not allow dedicated servers. http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/2369799 ~ skip to like 1hr 40 if u do'nt believe me (f*** you too) http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/6459/tombstonex.jpg |

This is effectively confirmed
and still funny as f*** over 18000 seconds later EDIT: yo listen to the podcast, s***beaks. It's the community manager of infinity ward speaking definitively on this on a podcast that isn't even 24 hours old. The only thing that could be more definitive is the press release we probably won't ever get. EDITTT: HEY LOOK http://kotaku.com/5384057/new-modern-warfare-matchmaking-service-will-definitely-reshape-pc-community Here's the score: by building up its own matchmaking service riding shotgun with Steam, "you can get in and play with players your same rank," Bowling said. However, "You're completely reliant on IWNet and there is no dedicated server or server list. You rely on IW Net for matchmaking and your games, but you still have your private matches." last edited by HashBrown at 14:23:31 18/Oct/09 |

It's probably for conslols only, which is the case for pretty much all conslols games anyway.

so they want to host all that bandwidth just to control the users? they could cut their running costs so much by just allowing authentication model. what's in it for IWnet? |

The games are gunna be peer to peer, like Xbox Live matchmaking. Enjoy your effectively 10 player capped games on Australian broadband connections and 300ms pings to America.

Matchmaking & Smoother Gameplay: When you want to player a multiplayer game on PC, in the past. You’d have to scroll through a Server Browser which listed every available server which was hosted by individual server admins. Each had their own private rules, mods, or ways of playing the game. Most players would also use the server browser to find just the best quality game (based on PING). With IWNET matchmaking, it takes all that into account for you. All you have to do is select the playlist (pre-set gametypes with custom rules) that fits the style of play you are in the mood for. When you do, it will automatically find you a game with the best performance, ping, and preferences based on your location and individual connection as well as matching you with players of your same SKILL. So you’re always guaranteed the best game performance for where you are and what connection you’re playing on as well as an equal game with other players of your same skill level, not rank, but skill level. It doesn’t mean you’ll just be thrown into a random game! It will put you in the game that will give you the smoothest gameplay possible without you having to manually find a server with the best ping. stolen from gamearena |

Yeah but alot of PC gamers dont want to just jump onto any server based on ping etc, they will have a particular server or a few servers they hang out on becuase they know other people that regularly go on that same server, or becuase they know that server is always good because its on there isp.
Why not just have an automatic system for the people that dont care and let the other people pick manually like they always have. I just dont remember PC gamers jumping up and down for an automatic match making system? Why make a change that no one has asked for. |

That is crap. What that ends up doing is skipping over the servers with low ping in order to match up your skill. So if your good and there are lots of noobs on low ping servers (to you) you'll get dumped on a server on the moon because their 'skill' matches yours (and vice versa). That is crap, I'd rather choose the server that has the best ping, regardless of the skill level of the people playing it, as people come and go pretty often on a public server. |

I sure as hell wont host one, both because my connection is not good enough and logic says it will use more of my download quota. Americans however wont ahve to worry about this so much. |

Americans however wont ahve to worry about this so much. I've heard that US ISPs are migrating to download/upload quota system on the "user pays" concept. I don't know if it will take but I've heard it. To that extent the MMOFPS Huxley uses a similar Peer to Peer system, 8 player games use 2g in 8 minutes. Net effect for a 25g Telstra account is 1.75 hours of play before your bandwidth is limited. |

This. I only play on Internode 4,7 & 24 because the people on there are (mostly) awesome and there are some good people and some noobs so I get a good variety of owning and getting owned. I was looking forward to this game but now I think I'll just find a friend with it, definitely won't be buying my own copy. |

That can't be right. Where is this info from? According to those figures you would need around 1.7MB/sec download speed to play with 8 people. |

According to those figures you would need around 1.7MB/sec download speed to play with 8 people. The figures are correct, I can attain 1.9mb/sec (down) on my connection and its what I recorded during Huxley closed beta. This is if you are the host, if you aren't then expect normal usage. I believe, in both systems, the actual host is the one with the best connection to "listen server" (for want of a better name). In the case of Huxley I've seen the game hang and startup again with a new host. All because an American joined an Aussie host. Of course we all left when that happened. Don't worry though Huxley has three systems; Skirmish (mentioned above and purely FPS), PVE (solo or you host the mission FPS), Battlegrounds (4 types, all on dedicated servers and the best pvp experience). Lastly there is a city for both factions where you do crafting and some socialising including cruising on your hoverbike. There is a distinct lack of detail when it comes to how IWnet sorts the hosts etc. No info about usage which should sound a big warning for Aussies and Kiwis. Perhaps Trog could give us an idea of how much an 8 player server uses. and now a vid about Hitlers reaction to no dedicated servers; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya9eEqEttU0&feature=related |

If any game, with 8 players, is generating 1.7MB/sec of traffic then its the worst made multiplayer game EVER. Those people should find other jobs instead of making games, or maybe shoot themselves. I guess this is the reason Huxley never actually gets finished.
