Despite Aion having a "oceanic" server (hosted on the US West Coast) I am getting 700pings.
Has anyone used lower ping or similar (what options are out there) ? And did it work ? No doubt vista64 will spit chips about it all. |

250-300 sound right for a west coast server. 700, something's definitely wrong there. |

I use my own proxy and get 280-320ms with iiNet. Without it's about 600-700ms.

All the servers are physically in east coast USA (afaik). They just say west coast for the time zone purposes.
I am using a proxy from my mates server in USA and i get around 300ping, tho "Smoothping" seems to be the go. They are offering free tunneling for Aion (from what i heard) http://www.smoothping.com/ |

It would seem it works extremely well.
And it would seem you can do it through a few services. Lowerping WOWTunnels (pretty damn cheap) Gamepath Art of Ping (seems euro based so prolly useless) Internode YMMV |

I played EQ before the expansions, and got me some f***ing Journeyman's Boots. Now that s*** was grindy.
I don't want more grinding in my games, less is thanks even from WoW's levels. |

I'm only up to level 15 (out of 50) but no grindy so far. Having a good ole time running around killing Mosbears and other fancy creatures without it feeling like a grind.

If you dawdle around killing random stuff aswell as gathering and crafting while doing the quests it's not too bad. But if you only do the quests and kill nothing else you'll run out of quests to do real quick then have to grind a level or two to open up some new quests.

EQ leaves all other games grinds to pale in comparison.
FBSS was a 1 in 8 drop off a 1 in 20 spawn with a 24 min respawn. And because of the resale value (they sold for about $200 "worth" of eq plat) it was a desired camp by every level 50 mofo in the game. No instances so there'd be a list and you'd beg, kiss ass your way on to the list so that you might get into the group that was farming the spawn point. Manastone, Jboots, and Rubicite BP were worse before they got removed if only because they could be solo farmed by certain classes. Better yet it didn't tell you what people looted so people would ninja loot the rare item and keep the common on them and say "oh just another crappy whatever". And forget questing to level... Or in game maps ... or even !'s above npcs to show they had quests. It was all about guilds cock blocking other guilds progress by killing world bosses (all bosses were world bosses). Needing to kill a boss say 50 times to get enough parts to be able to get into a zone ... ahh EQ ... those were the days. |

What these sites don't tell you is all you need to do to get the same affect as using their service is a few quick registry key changes and a reboot.

I am enjoying Aion a great deal and my personal opinion thus far is that it craps all over wow even if it was from simple s*** like being able to stack crap well beyond triple figures in my inventory.
See to me while comparing MMO's people tend to focus on big issues such as content ect ect (and rightly so) they tend to forget the small annoying stupid pointless s*** that really can make a game a pain to play. As I mention above with the stacking thing while it's not a monsterous issue on it's own you couple it together with a dozen or a hundred other annoying as f*** things and you have a game thats just painful. Aion seems to me so far to of avoided some of the ridiculous s*** Wow seems to just have everywhere. Even the trade skills in Aion have allowed me to produce s*** thats actually usefull (at lower lvls)and not just a horrid time sink. For me the game so far shows some significant promise and I am looking forward to working my way through it. I guess I can't ilistrate that more clearly than to point out I have 4 characters lvling through the same s*** at more or less the same time and I am enjoying it as much with the forth char to hit an area as I am the first. That is something I have never been able to stomach in any other game before. My ranger loves his single stack of thousands and thousands of arrows. :P PS oh and it's kind of nice and handy having my target nearest enemy button actually ... you know target the nearest f***ing enemy. last edited by Taipan at 20:30:29 30/Sep/09 |

the stacking is cool, but the inv is still way too small and way too expensive to increase imo
and I found the opposite to you - I find the single linear leveling areas/paths to be incredibly boring, even to the point where there's barely any relief even changing factions cos one faction's lowbie zone is essentially just a copy/paste of the other and slightly re-arranged. the quests are the same boring empty kill umpteen of these and give me umpteen of these frog skins even though not every frog drops a skin somehow, and run all over the zone from end to end talking to npc's. then ascend, teleport to a hub town and do exactly the same introduction-to-flying quest, then rinse/repeat the lowbie zone all the way to 20 with some slight change in the form of an elite mob area approaching 20. complete and utter cheapass f***s in the content department, so far at least. ding 20, teleport to the next zone and it gets a little more interesting cos you can rift across to the enemy side plus there's 2 zones to choose from which is a bit of relief as usual though, I'm focusing on the end game and pvp along the way which seems full of positives, plus playing on a US server instead of the oceanic designated one with all the old merlin crowd from daoc |

I'm liking it, it's far superior (thus far) to WoW in my opinion in how the game plays.
22 Ranger, Handicraft at 103 :/ Elyos on Nezekan. Its not so much of a grind fest as the levels become astronomically further apart after each ding. Currently it takes 1.6mil exp to get to 23 (I'm about 3/4 of the way there) 29 to 30 is 6mil exp I've heard from someone in legion. I've also heard that 45-50 takes about as long as 1-50 =| However at that point, not forgetting its a PvPvE game and you're actually supposedly able to get levels in PvP, |

i got bored of it pretty quick.. got to lvl 20 in a day and a bit and then meh. It's just another huge time sink typical mmo, if you enjoy mmo's then you'll enjoy it.
As for tunneling.. i know the LP owners so i'ma plug it.. out of all the services.. which I've tried (lowerping, gamepath and wowtunnels). LP has been the most stable ping wise and server stability wise. Gamepath been the crappiest and wowtunnels in between. |

Currently it takes 1.6mil exp to get to 23 Which sounds like a lot but when you consider that mobs give you a LOT more exp than what wow's do it isn't really all that bad. 17 to 18 needs like 522k exp and mobs give like 3 - 4k at a time. It evens out in the end really. I like it a lot more than wow so far as it's much more enjoyable. As with wow though I can't work out who the s*** I want to play. Highest so far is a 17 Elyos Spiritmaster on Nezekan and it's kinda funny to be able to macro up an entire rotation with 1 button press. Sure makes grinding easy. Think i'm gonna stick with that since I do like the spirits they have. Only gripe I have with the game is that from what i've seen there really is only like 2 or 3 different types of armor. Everything seems to be colour changes on them. Other than that i'm enjoying a lot. I need to get a bunch of money together though and start leveling up my alch and whatever the tailoring equiv is. last edited by DM at 02:25:09 01/Oct/09 |

Mobs start to give you a -little- more exp.
Quests still only yield 30k exp, campaign quests until the very late ones still don't yield those 200k exp+. Not that its a huge problem, but it certainly doesn't fly by like WoW's level, it makes the Skinners Box/Carrot on a Stick psychology behind wanting to play a little more intolerable. But check out some of the abyss vids on youtube will keep you going :) |

Yeah yeah, I meant 45-50 takes as long as 1-45.
Thought that was pretty obvious. The point is, in comparison to WoW, whilst yes, in that too [And all MMO's/RPG's] it took longer to achieve each level as you went, in Aion level 50 is a bigger achievement than level 60 was in wow. That was the rumour from the Korean Aion before ours was released anyway. last edited by Mephz at 11:39:51 01/Oct/09 |

It seems my ping almost never gets below about 650 which is a bit of a bitch. I had a look at smoothoing but to be honest I really don't want to be forking out any more cash per month than I already am for a game.
I really would like to do something about it but most of this tunneling crap and proxy server stuff is over my head. |

Check your PMs Taipan, sent you step by step detailed instructions on how to set it up (through nodes proxy as example), its very easy.
Hit up Ticman as he stated earlier if you're not on node! (I found his proxy to be better than Nodes FWIW) |
