Hi all,

I'm looking at making use of the Government's grant and getting roof insulation. Does anyone here recommend a company which are good to deal with?

cheers,

Ben.

any one which doesn't break your house.

We had one that broke our house a little bit (stomping around made a light shade fall and break) but they replaced it. They're in Cairns tho so probably not much use recommending them.

The guys we used put a hole in our ceiling and the 'fix up job' is dodgy as f***.

Australian Insulation or something

What's with everyone suddenly getting roof insulation? Do most homes not have it when they're first built? I'm just curious because our roof has had insulation in it ever since the place was first built. Or is this insulation some kind of new stuff meant to be better than previous insulation material?

I am pretty sure any house built after 2003/6 required insulation by law. Those houses are not covered by the free insulation offer. This is to make all the older houses up to code

Our house is over 20 years old and still has insulation in the roof though, was it not mandatory all those years ago or something? Is it something only a few old houses would have?

I don't have a proper ceiling because of my stupid high ceilings. Would love one but have no idea what to do about it.

Sometimes people buy things even if they're not legally required to.

20 years ago it most certainly was only an option, like solar hot water or whirlybirds etc. Nowadays it is mandatory i believe. My house is about 16 years old and it doesn't have it, until wednesday this week anyway.

Although it is part of the building code now it's not to bring older houses up to code at all, code applies to when the building was built/finalised. It's purely part of the stimulus package.

Do not get fibre-glass batts, they will be the new asbestos.

Has anyone paid over the $1600 rebate?
And how long between quote to install?

I got quoted +$160 on top of that -- think Im getting stitched.
I keep forgetting to chase them up -- they quote, charged my card before the job, and havent booked an install. oops :D

Tempted to get a new quote, but I'm heading overseas in 5 weeks, so Im not sure there is time to get a new quote + install before we go.

make sure you don't get your house burnt down either.

watched this house go from smoke to flames irl.
House fire, Wellington Point: Police and fire investigators will continue examinations into the cause of a house fire this afternoon. Around 4.30pm the owner of the house in Canegrove Court was reversing his vehicle from the garage when he noticed smoke coming from the roof of his home. He ran into the house and woke his sleeping wife and phoned fire officers. He hosed down the roof until fire officers arrived and extinguished the fire. Extensive damage was caused to the roof of the house. Preliminary investigations revealed the house had spray insulation installed in the roof that afternoon. The fire is not considered suspicious but scientific examinations will continue to determine the cause.

see, if she was in the kitchen and NOT SLEEPING AT 4.30PM she wouldn't have been in any danger

Definitely stay away from Australian Insulations. Just had the guys replacing the roof find a whole section of our roof with no insulation.

Not impressed at all!

guy at work had these installed, he said the guys doing the job were backpackers or something lol

they basically didn't install it over half of his main bedroom and in another room because they were too hard to get to, but it looked schmick if you just popped your head through the manhole

they came back and did the rest after some interesting phone conversations

Same here, you can't see this area from the manhole.

First a foot through my ceiling and now not doing the job properly.

Extremely peeved off especially since the 'bosses' went up into the roof to fix the hole and could clearly see that they hadn't installed it over the area (right next to it).

Look here for a fair chunk of installers, We had Sunergy do ours thismorning, good blokes, courteous and kind and non-whingey. The main bloke looked like me! Its kinda strange talking to someone and all that's going though your mind is (woah this guy looks just like me except blue eyes!). They do sunny coast and bris northside too. Cos my house isn't large they were able to give us the best crap they had, and no it's not the fibreglass crapola, its the silver s***.

the reason why theres so many dodgey jobs being done is because all the retards/labourers that have been pushed outta construction cause theres no work are now doing insulation!. doing insulation is a c*** of a job!, ps make sure u stay away from that pump in s*** its f***ing crap

I jumped in and ordered some yesterday. I got the blow in stuff already and I thought it was a bit slim but there was more up there than I had remembered. So its getting a top up and I'm getting the patio done too. just wondered if it would have been better getting the solar hot water for downstairs for when I renovate but it'd probably be sitting idle for 5 years. Oh well not a cent to pay and the more the better I suppose.

Went with Affordable Insulation because they were closest.

Wait, so if your house is already insulated you can still get the govt money to "top up"?

If your going to get it done, try and get the wool bats not the s*** fibre glass ones. I used to install it, and still do at work sometimes. The fibreglass is s*** to work with and is not as good as the wool. We just had a guy come round and quote my house today, he said its not fibreglass they use. Yet when i got home i looked on the form and its called glass wool. So watch out for dodgy ones.

There's an option to choose "has insulation but negligible" which is what I chose as the sides of the roof cavity were covered in minimal insulation and the rest has settled a bit so it's not at 100% efficiency.

So yes if your house: 1) has insulation but negligible; or 2) only part of roof area is covered
then you can "top up"

go here:
Australian Government Insulation Rebate
Then select "Request insulation quote" of the insulator of your choosing.

Man, this insulation stuff is the best, got it in yesterday for free, our house usually has a 3deg discrepancy compared to outside (3deg cooler in the day, 3deg warmer at night). Now it's 6 degrees. I'm super stoked. Oh and it's quieter too! I like that very much.

anyone have any opinion on polyester? I going for this

though its hard to find objective / independant info on it. All you get is the marketing crap.

I used Higgins Insulation and got Polyester. Wool was tempting but i cbf paying an extra 450 bucks to get it done but not much benefit.

The guys who installed it seemed to do an OK job but who knows. I haven't been tramping around up there to check.
