Hi all,
I recently signed up to TPG thinking it was a deal to good to be true.. like everyone else. although now that i am connect my speed struggles to reach 200kbytes/s? im currently at You are 1211 m from REDC as the crow flies. Estimated cable length of 1877.05 m. Estimated speed of 15000Mbit when infact my sycn speed averages 1900-2500 depending on the time of day. my phone cable is 1.5m long. my modem gives me this: Type Interleave Path Status SHOWTIME Downstream Upstream Data rate(Kbps) 2541Kb 177Kb Noise Margin 3 5 Output power(dBm) 122 188 Attenuation(dB) 61 55 i just read in another post about someone else on tpg changed modems and got an increase in speed of like 5mbit a second? i have the Belkin F5D8636-au4. any help please? |

s*** modem, but that wouldnt explain speeds that low:
whats your phone line like? can you hear crackling or is it clear and loud? definately try borrowing a modem off someone, your modem could have issues; i use and recommend billions (woudltn touch belkin) u got filters on anything else in teh house that uses the phone line? last edited by Spook at 16:39:33 26/Aug/09 |

already tried tpgs forum they "check my lines for faults" then dont hear back from the happend 3 times so far.. lol
and for the iso test im on naked dsl sorry must have forgot to mention.. so i wouldnt know what my signal quality is like either.. |

How old is your house too? The wiring for the phone line might have degraded with age.

You guys must have s***ty lines then, we can get over 1mb/sec on TPG at home, same with Jadz0r at work. Very happy with them.

thats what i thought. but upon reading another post in the forum of someone living over double my distance from the exhange and also having a 15m phone cable managing to get 6.5mbit then getting the billion 7300 i think getting over 11mbit/s.
i guess i expected atleast 300-400kb/s at a minimum. |

i did, however, take appart my phone socket to find only 3 cables connected instead of 2 pairs and after correcting that saw the speed go from 1mbit to 1.5mbit and then had a whinge to TPG and they somehow raised it to 2-2.5Mbit..
when i first got my belkin i had to do a firmware update being as it had issuse with TPG, so im thinking about trying a new modem all together. |

I have tpg at home and I've got no problems pulling down 500KBytes/sec when torrenting in the wee hours of the morning, you guys must suck at teh internets if you can't even get 200
I had a similar problem when I first installed it, it was in a house that I wasn't familure with and forgot to put a filter on the foxtel box s*** speeds for a bit until i figured that out and now its all good |

Forget it and make the move to cable. Super fast but less gigs. Get a smaller cheaper plan for d/l's and do it overnight who gives a holy snappin ducks*** about how long the d/l takes.

That's at about 2.5kms from the exchange. which is exactly my point im less than 1.5km away and my adsl sync speed is 2.5Mbit my line attentuation is at like 60? |

Try a new modem. I'm about 1 or 1.5k from the DSLAM and get 1.7mb/sec on major sites.

A website gave you an estimation based on a precoded equation, so in reality, you could be further away from the exchange than you think.
The other thing to do is keep harrassing TPG technical support, constantly. Do everything they ask you to do, even if you have already done it, stay on top of it, and if it doesnt get resolved, maybe bring in the ombudsmen. The other problem you may face is check the T&C's, it might, like telstra, state that your minimum is 1.5 (which is true) and you may obtain speeds UP TO 24mb/s. |

T&Cs is short for Terms and Conditions. |

Billion 7404 ftw Also, your line attenuation seems very high for 1.2km from exchange. I used to get s***ful speeds on tpg when I lived at hendra. Could probably be put down to the awful asus modem and the dodgy wiring in the house but I was still unhappy..

60db is pretty crap, I am 3km+ away and its only ~47, which I still think is pretty crap for 3km.
Borrow someone elses modem if you can and see if there is any difference, if not then its something to do with your line. When you are testing your sync speeds, make sure absolutely nothing else is plugged into any of your phone ports and plug the modem directly into phone line. Try to use the shortest piece of phone cable that you have to plug between the modem and the line. Connect up to the first phone connection in your house. |

Also if its still crap, pull your phone line out of your modem at random times during the day and say that the bad connection is making your connection drop out.

TPG are his tech support people, they rent line of telstra, telstra is their wholesaler, so they esculate the issue to telstra. There for, he should be pushing them to push telstra. He cannot go directly to telstra to complain. Yes, it could be the modem or it could be internal wiring but that is not the only factors in play. It could be a s***ty port at the exchange or the way the wiring was punched in there, but unfortunatly, TPG cannot have techs go in the exchange, because only telstra employees or certified contractors can enter the exchange and do work (last time I checked) which means only his provider can put a request into telstra to get it checked. If it is a fault at the exchange then TPG have EVERYTHING to do with it. |

TPG apparently can be a difficult ISP to get support from. But Ive had 2 friends that use it and have never had a problem. I hate ADSL Long live Cable. |

Complain on the Whirlpool forums. When my line first got connected I had terrible terrible speeds. I got a whim from a TPG forum guy and everything was sorted. Their email address is: forum_admin@tpg.com.au. I'm extremely happy with TPG. I get speeds of > 1.7mb/s |

60 db? That's around what my old house had, and it was about 2 km from the exchange (but the cable actually looped twice around the estate block, according to a Telstra tech. making the cable run length around 4 km.) Doesn't sound like anything to do with TPG to be honest.
Which reminds me, Telstra recently pulled the plug on that house. You can't get adsl there anymore, even though it's been used there for years. I figure it's something to do with their minimum specs for ADSL1 but who knows why. Its actually forced the current residents to move out, because they were running their small business from home and were reliant on their broadband for every day operations. |

well i had to get the phone line connected before i could get the naked TPG so telstra sent in a tech to connect and test the lines and what not but i dunno i mean i know my appartment isnt the newest but i thought i should get better then this.
if it ends up being wiring faults will the come from my pocket or tpgs large wallet? thanks for all the helps guys |

It will come from Telstra's pockets...
I had a similar issue, TPG as you no doubt have heard have s*** Support, so I got onto Telstra's case gave them all the SNR(db) info and said look come out and fix it, and they did. If there is a fault it's free, if not then they charge you. |

Also, Telstra are only responsible up to the network boundary point. The internal wiring is your own responsibility.

f***ing laggy Probably packet loss. Ping and download speeds might be fine but if you drop upload packets you'll bounce around on others screens. You may want to play with your MTU and drop it down a bit.. Also i don't play, but have a look at your rates, if your upload is too high it'll choke and you'll look laggy. I havn't really fps'd since CS Source.. |

Hey Drew, I'm having the exact same issues atm. After fighting with the f*ckers for quite some time, it turns out they have been bought by SOUL (yes the mobile company), they upgraded alot of their infrastructure to cope with this etc... BUT a few things were changed at thier exhanges over the past few weeks\months, which have caused this exact fault. They rang me a few hours ago to tell inform me that they have no idea when they will fix this issue, until then I'll just have to get used to downloading at 6-12kb\s. -Ivonin |

Leave or ask for compensation. Or both, I'd want to be compensated for every month where they haven't been supplied with adequate bandwidth. Even Telstra had to guarantee 115Kb/s or greater speeds when I was working for them. |
