Yeah his major asset was the beatles songs (approx $1bn). But the money he was earning from the song royalties etc etc was not outweighing the expenses (neverland etc). Thus he was a slowly sinking ship.

yeah pretty much owning those rights was the only thing keeping him floating. sony apparently could have gonee him for the rights because of debts he had to them but didn't want to be seen trying to sink a) michael jackson and b) the guy who owns the right to the band with probably still one of the biggest fan bases ever
