fyi.

I want to buy shoes, I don't have time to go to a shoe shop right now...

I look online, there are 11ty billion shoe shops in the US... some will even ship internationally, but charge $50+ USD for shipping.

Why can't we have similar online shopping here? (smaller market for one I guess...)

From memory the Ebay shops in the US have reasonable, sometimes free shipping to OZ?

I was looking for a specific shoe - that I found on one of the american online stores (Rockport Evander). Found it on Ebay, but ~ 60 USD Shipping.

I'm not going to pay $200 for $100 shoes :D

I'd understand if it was something like a old pair of Rare Puma Discs or something dumb, but they sure do look like a very generic pair of black shoes.

What's got your fancy over that product?

I meant that they were the only ones I searched on Ebay for.

Point is, America seems to be a LONG WAY ahead of us in online shopping.

We have groceries, DVD's, Ebay.

They have pretty much everything.

Not really on topic, but how do you know they fit, you'll like them and they're comfortable?

That Gilmours shoe place at Palmdale sells Rockport stuff. I bought a pair for work and they lasted f***ing ages but I guess the only downside is the price. They were expensive as f*** but the quality was great.

Your life must be f***ing HECTIC if you can't get to a shoe shop. That's amazing. Yet you still have time to post on AG/QGL.

I agree, Aus online shopping kinda sucks .. definitely hard finding specific things sometimes. Most likely the smaller market thing though.

Electronics are a bit of an exception Jim...

They are actually not too bad...

But there are a lot of areas where there is just not online shopping available in Australia. (Car Audio comes to mind)

Yeah, buying apparel online in Australia is really s***. Some other things, like electronics aren't so bad, but apparel just flat out fails.

Why don't you guys build a website if there is a market opening?

One of the easiest e-businesses is the importing and sale of goods..

Hogfather apparell online is another story.

Consider:

Shipping cost per item (eg a pair of jeans or shoes)
Stocking entire size and colour ranges
Taking photos of every item you are going to list online
Products are seasonal
You need to have a great exchange policy
Prices have to be very competitive in order to attract customers

This is probably why so many people just try to flog fake ed hardy on ebay.

I pretty much disagree on every point, almost everything you mention is in some way a factor to one degree or another with any online business. The OP has history in working with OS online stores where it has worked for them.

Its just not been done (well) in Australia (yet). There is nothing special about apparrel compared to other goods that makes it especially unsuitable for online sales, assuming there is a market for it.

Granted the need to issue refunds or exchanges for size variations etc is obvious but its not something that is insurmountable, and the associated shipping costs can be directly charged to the consumer. The biggest issue imo is the lack of standardisation on clothing sizes - if I know my neck, chest, waist and leg length I should be able to buy with good certainty of fit without trying something on.
