yo jigz,
anywhere along hargraves st is good; the turkish joint on the corner, the greek place over the road (next door to mondo) plus theres a heap of smaller places further down (pizza/tibetan/thai/vietnamese) pretty much any of them would be good friday nites are busy though, the whole st fills up pretty quick note, all of these places arent real fancy, but they all do super good food; last edited by Spook at 17:41:34 24/Aug/09 |

El Torito, the mexican restaurant on boundary st is awesome.
they make the sorta food people in mexico would eat,i.e authentic, rather than the westernized taco bell kinda deal. if you dont book, you wont get a table but......3844 5977 its that good..... |

mondo organic is pretty nice. I would never go anywhere that has "organic" in the title, or serves "organic" food, because the word is essentially meaningless. Most likely it just serves as an excuse to charge more money. |

+1 for Caravansarai. In this weather though, see if you can get the outdoor section. You will sweat your asche off.
Other than that I dig the Tibetan place, although it's maybe not as fancy as what you are looking for. At the opposite end of the scale is the Indonesian place, which is cheap and tacky, but amazing. They have a guy playing muzak on a casio in the corner - brilliant. |

props on the turkish place that spook mentions... it's rad if you have enough people to get the banquets. lots of awesome breads n dips... awesome roast lamb.
i don't agree that it's all good around there though... some of the chinese places are really average. I would never go anywhere that has "organic" in the title, or serves "organic" food, because the word is essentially meaningless. Most likely it just serves as an excuse to charge more money. haha hi5 billy ;D i never tire of telling my hippy mates that all food is organic. ;] |

organic food generally means its free of pesticides, hormones etc, and hasn't been raised in a tiny cage.

organic food generally means its free of pesticides, hormones etc, and hasn't been raised in a tiny cage. This isn't correct organic means its free from pesticides/hormones. Free range means they're not in tiny cages. Organic eggs and free range eggs are two different things. Generally free range eggs = totally natural. The chickens are allowed out when they wish to eat and root and then when they are bored they come back in. |

Also the hormones thing isn't even an issue with chicken in Australia, as hormones haven't been added to chicken in Australia for decades.

It's fantastic for big parties of people by the platter, but it's also good for a just a few if you want to order something yourself. Also, Punjabi is good, but I don't understand why everyone says its the best. |

With regard to "organic" food - I'm really tempted to start a whole new thread on this because it's a little off topic and the sort of thing people should know about.
organic food generally means its free of pesticides, hormones etc, and hasn't been raised in a tiny cage. You've used the word "generally", which should be a red flag in terms of standards. If a criteria for a food standard is "generally" applied, then we can never be sure when it is or isn't... But let's look at each of the things you said. Free of pesticides: Not true at all. Section 3 of the National Standard for Organic and Biodynamic Produce 2008 stipulates that only synthetic pesticides are not to be used. Chemically, there is no difference between synthetic and non-synthetic pesticides. Free of hormones: Not true - only "reproductive hormones" are not to be used during breeding (Section 3.13). Other than that, I can't find any reference to the word "hormone" throughout the entire document. Hasn't been raised in a tiny cage: Well, greazy already pointed out that this has nothing to do with being "organic". But on this note, from what my skeptical buddies have told me, even "free range" is a bit of a dubious statement - I don't think the animals are quite as "free" as greazy said. BUT, I haven't specifically looked at the guidelines here so can't say anything with any certainty. So what does "organic" food mean? Well, I really don't know, because it offers no extra nutritional benefit, it isn't "greener" (more environmentally friendly), and the produce ends up being exactly the same as something that is not labeled "organic". Why then is it being marketed in such a way that makes some people believe it is somehow a better, safer, healthier product? That's terrible, IMO. And besides, there is absolutely nothing wrong with non-"organic" foods in the first place. |

Re: Organic Food
Regardless of whether you think organic food is better for you or not it still tastes better than a lot of the s*** in the supermarket. In my opinion this is not because it's 'organic', but because when you buy from a small, specialised, local (organic or otherwise) producer you get the fruit and veg faster and fresher and with better quality control and it hasn't been sitting in a freezer for 3 months before being gassed like can happen with big supermarket stuff. Supermarket produce is really hit and miss, whereas buying from a non-organic fruiterer or organic supplier is consistently good. So even if 'organic' is just a load of hoo-hah, it's still a way of assuring fresh and ripe produce simply due to the smaller and more local scale. So to me 'organic' is just another way of finding a specialised fruit and veg supplier to ensure better tasting produce but now I just shop from Fruity Capers which is just as ripe and tasty as any organic suppliers I've used. Also, I've been to Punjabi 3 times, the first two times was great but the most recent was utter s***e! Menu is a bit hit and miss but if you stick to the basics it seems to be good. last edited by Le Cock at 09:29:24 25/Aug/09 |

Already a few nice places recommended (punjabi, caravanseri, gunshop). There is also Lock and Load on boundary st, a but pricey but has some very nice food. In front of coles there is a newish thai place which is also pretty good, can't remember the name.
Down the road at southbank there are also a heap of nice restaurants, but the price down there seems to hike up a bit. |
