Topic: Reliable multi-threaded Usenet binary posters?

Anyone got any recommendations? At the moment I'm just using newspost which is a command-line tool for Linux. It's pretty good but a) it's not multithreaded so sucks for big binary posts, and b) seems to crap out every now and then which means I end up having to repost a lot of stuff.

I assume most people that are using Usenet are leechers not posters but just thought I'd ask.

Trog, have you checked out this handy howto?

http://www.usenetshack.com/the-definitive-guide-how-to-upload-post-to-usenet/

I found it last month and it works well.

I thought that only people in The Netherlands posted binaries on usenet.

That's pretty cool! I download whatever I can from Usenet, because it always maxes out my connection speed, but downloading directly from Ausgamers is usually really fast anyway.

Woops, bumping, cuz I missed the response and wanted to point something out to Midda -

You'll probably get pretty awesome speeds from AusGamers (generally, unless we're really packed out which happens occasionally).

The advantages of using Usenet though (...for files that we have it for anyway) is that a) you'll almost certainly ALWAYS max out your connection - most decent usenet providers have f***offhuge amounts of bandwidth available, way more than we could ever have b) you get built-in error correction because of .par2 files (even though it might mean you end up downloading a little more data than the file is actually "worth". It's almost like using torrents, but less sucky because you don't have to upload.

ALSO, the big advantage for us is, all the heavy lifting, bandwidth-wise, is being done by someone else :) So you're saving us money/bandwidth by using the Usenet download option.

From the logs not too many people are using it atm, which is cool; most people probably won't bother because Usenet is fairly hard to use (compared to the alternatives). I suspect as BT gets more tired though more people will switch to Usenet for other reasons, and maybe then we'll see more people using it.

edit: if you've never tried usenet, you can get a free trial from our affiliate link:

http://www.giganews.com/?a=ausgamers

If you sign up using that link, we get a tiny referral fee, which is also nice. So far I think we've made about $3 from one sign up, so don't worry about us getting rich.

If you get the free trial, we have a step by step guide on how to use it to download stuff.

Heh, yeah, I completely forgot about the Ausgamers Usenet postings. I should bookmark it or something. Though, now that I get all of my PC games through Steam, I have less need to download game files from any websites. I should really get all of my trailers and stuff from it though.

I'm amazed by the smarts of some usenet software. Like alt.binz, auto-pausing and not downloading PAR files unless they are actually needed. Even then only downloading the minimum necessary to complete the repair.

yeh it's pretty cool. I actually only just got a vague idea about how they work; I asked Nats why it was creating each subsequent .par2 file 2x as big as the previous one and he explained how they work - like if there's more missing peices it downloads a bigger .par2 file for recovery. Very neat.

A key point is also cost, trog.

Free AGN download or cost Usenet download.

I'm happy to use Usenet to download some stuff to take the load off AGN servers, but still, there's a cost no matter how small.

$25 for 180GB on Astraweb, atm, which I use.

Or just switch to Internode. Standard, unencrypted Astraweb access included for free.

referral spam in the past seemed to get insta nuked
operative word = spam!

Trog is responding with an informative post and including the link. Also he is telling everyone exactly that yes it's a referral and yes they receive money from it.

It's not like he made a new thread specifically for the purposes of going Hay guys click this and sign up for awesomeness

Thanks parabol (and Hogfather), that's a hot tip.

Have to play around with SABnzdb to get a couple of instances on the go with different settings. Presumably possible.

Yeah, it's one of the reasons why I'd love to change to Internode, but their piddly download quotas keep me with TPG. It's cheap to just split the cost of an Astraweb account with my mates anyway.
