Topic: id Responds to Leaked Wolfenstein Multiplayer

Some unlucky basterd is going to feel the wrath of Activision's legal department, and I certainly wouldn't want to know if being hax awesome is worth the ramifications of the largest third-party publisher in the world (and all the money they have to throw lawyer after lawyer at you), but hey, that's just how some people roll.

If you're not sure what I'm talking about, a leaked version of the forthcoming multiplayer portion of Wolfenstein hit the interwebs last week sparking massive forum debate and outcry at the quality of the game as it was leaked. id's Community Manager, Sokal, was quick to defend the game and also assert the aformentioned wrath, which you can read right here.

In a nutshell though, competitive gamers will have access to the game's SDK once it's released, and id are, of course, promising post-launch support in the way of patches and fixes as needed and addressed by the community at large.

While on the topic, we have a new Wolfenstein trailer up for you today you can check out right here.

Is it just me or do all of ID's games of late make everything look like it's covered in bright shiny plastic?

Yep, there is some plastic wrap action going on. I'm not a fan of the look.

I don't often use the Ausgamers page, cause I'm more interested in the forums than the games, but I just gave it a go and I'm a little confused. I wanted to see these shiny plastic models people have mentioned, so I tried to find some screenshots. I went to the screenshots section of Ausgamers, then found the "Wolfenstein 3D" folder. When I clicked on that, it took me to a list of other games... no Wolf 3D to be found... (by the way, I realise this is probably refering to the original game, but it still seems to be a dead link)

By the way, I like how Wolf is WWII, and you used the spelling "basterd".

you should just be able to click the bottom link in steve's post and it takes you right to the page, billy. works from qgl.

dunno what you dudes mean by the plastic look? the monsters looked a bit like that, but i didn't notice it too much anywhere else. i'll give it another watch. what would be a game that does the castle/dungeon environment better graphically in your opinion?

It's not just a plastic look on characters - the whole look of id games doesn't do it for me. Stalker, Fallout 3, L4D all look better imo. For some reason id stuff just screams "I'm in a game, I'm in a game" to me more than others games.

Don't forget folks; Wolfenstein is using the id Tech 4 (Doom 3) engine, albeit with some added features and improvements. id Tech 4 is 5 years old now... cut it a little slack. The Source Engine is almost as old, but it has been heavily modified over the last few years. Characters and monsters may look a little plasticky and shiny in id Tech 4, but they are far more detailed than HL2 characters. I find Source graphics to look too bland, pastel and 'cartoony'. id Tech 4 is also vastly more efficient than Source (if properly utilised), but then I guess that's what happens when you have Carmack making an engine.

The two engines are like apples and oranges, they excel in different ways. CryEngine 2 is better than both of them anyway :D

You have to remember that it seals in the freshness. I think GLAD may have made a fortune. Shrink wrap the way of the future.

Mmmmmmmmm cryengine2 lovely. Shrink wrap it for me would ya.

id tech 5 engine is brand new and everything still looks plastic (besides the skyboxes), just much more detailed looking plastic, still looks good to me though.

considering the money they've made selling their ideas to figurine makers this makes a lot of sense.

I wish Valve would headhunt JC.

Game is f***ing s***.

Regenerating health - Thanks Halo you f***ing douchebag of a game for introducting this into main stream FPS gaming.

Camera - Shakes worse than a parkinsons victim in a rally car. Running = nearly impossible to see s***

Retarded game mechanic - I don't want to have to rely on a gay medallion to play the game and see "hidden" paths.

Aiming - Yet another game where you need to use your iron sights to do s*** all.

Hitler - His name is Hitler, not f***ing Himler. Does some US company own the rights to his name or something and refuses to let anyone use it?

"Sandbox" try hard - Just such a bad choice IMO. Keep sandbox style game play to games like GTA where it actually means something. In an FPS it just pisses you off running around the same retarded town going to black markets and s***.

Graphics - Now i'm the first to say that graphics don't make a good game but these look like a tweaked Q3 engine. The previous Wolenstein game had better graphics IMO.

Worst of all though it feels like a bad console port. The menus are akward to navigate and voice acting just sucks. I half expect the TF2 medic to pop up when I hear people yelling about dummkopfs in such bad german accents. Just do what Crysis did and have actual german used by the NPCs. At least we still have valve who put PC gaming first. 1 1/2 hours played and then deleted.

I was never interested in this game anyway.

I don't mind regenerative health, though.
