Ok I know it's old. But does anyone know where I can download a decent copy of this. Bohemia doesn't support this anymore since VBS2 and it was never retail anyway. I've seen a few downloads available, but they've all been from the same originator and so it looks like spam. Can anyone help? |

Hi trog, VBS 1.0 (Virtual Battle Space) is a military combat sim. It was never released as a retail because it's brother ArmA was already there. It was primarily aimed at the real Aussie military guys as tool for simulated warfare. Then they brought out VBS2, which is aimed at the international military market. VBS2 is already being used by the ADF, US Marines and several other overseas military arms, VBS2 goes for around $800ausd for the basic package and goes up to about $1500 for all the extra's, and you can only order it online. The original VBS1.0 was purchased online, but I don't know how much it was. Suffice to say, you can only download a torrent copy of it now...if you can find a decent one. |

Right - we only let people talk about where to buy games, not pirate them |

Normally that is the case for me. I've never downloaded anything so far that I didn't pay for. But what happens when there's something you like, that's still around, but you just can't buy it anymore? |

I'm not sure why you'd ask that question in response to what trog said

Have you contacted the developer stating that you bought the original product and you wanted to know if they had a copy you could DL or be sent?

Battlefield is a cartoon. From a civvy consumer's point of view though VBS 1.0 was not much different from Operation Flashpoint. You could make OFP like VBS 1.0 just with realism mods and auscam skins for troops which was all readily available. I don't know why you would want VBS 1.0 now. Just buy ArmA 2 or what a couple of weeks and buy OFP2. Both significantly better than VBS 1.0. It really only had changes like for example the M72 LAW was a single round only - whereas in the civvy version it was multiple rounds as long as you can find spare rockets. All the realism changes were of that nature. |

Thanks Pinky, now I'm getting somehere. I asked about VBS1.0 because I'm a vet who had used VBS1 and VBS2 was just way out of my reach. I'm new to the gaming world, and I've only been an online user for about five weeks, this is my first computer (go figure, I'm 58 years old, never needed one, this one is a gift from my kids...big kids!) so you'll have to excuse me if I seem niave'. I only knew about ArmA, because some Army guys on my ship (Kanimbla) were playing it. So that's my total gaming experience. Now so far I've seen ADF patches for ArmA 1, will they work if I bought V2.0? |

trog is right - but it will be weeks rather than months before someone updates those add-ons for ArmA 2. There is a lot of demand for them, and the update requirements seem to be minor at this stage. The only question is which way the modding community will go - I am almost certain the majority will swing to the best out of ArmA 2 and Operation Flashpoint 2. It remains to be seen the differences though. My military friends all played ArmA. I used to do assault missions with them and they all took it very seriously and I believe they were always happy with the realism. Really, for an ambush or assault you are more concerned with things like the terrain, target location, squad tactics (formation and approach and so on) - none of that is any different in any version of the game. One thing I did notice with ArmA was there were serious servers and there were silly servers. Because you had the option to camouflage your face you would get these whackers with clown faces and so on. They mostly seemed to hang around the 'capture the flag' servers on Internode for example. Your more serious types with realistic cam hung around the coop servers, in particular GamingSA. Then your really serious ones pooled money into their clans to hire their own passworded servers. So there's a good array of different kinds of players. I personally will buy both ArmA 2 and Operation Flashpoint 2 - however if cash is tight, consider holding out to see where the crowd flocks. |

Thanks guys. In the time since I first posted (this morning) one of my old unit mates had apparently been watching this forum (I didn't even know he was a gamer, and I've known him for 15 years...go figure). He called me not five minutes ago (he's still on the phone). Anyway he's got ArmA V1.18 with all the latest add ons, he's moving onto something else now and he tells me I can have his. Like me, he's not very computer savvy, so he has to get his son to format a disk that includes all the patches, so that I'll have the whole works. Is this a better alternative? |

Definitely a good start to see if you will like the game or not. The issue will be that ArmA is essentially a stronger multiplayer game, which therefore requires an online presence of a lot of players. The ArmA 1 community is pretty much guaranteed to move to ArmA 2 or OFP2 (guess) unless there is something pretty wrong with the new game. However, not true for all games. Just take Call of Duty 4 as an example - most seemed to migrate to COD5, and then come back to COD4 in my experience. |

Well as it'll be my first serious game venture I'll give it a go. Mike (my mate) told me just before he got off the phone, that as well as a lot of modern patches for ArmA, there's also coming online, some Stargate patches as well. As you can see from my signature, I'll definintely be looking out for those as well. Thanks Pinky, seeya. |

This is like me, there's a movie I really want but it's not being made anymore so I can't buy it anywhere. I suppose I could check cash converters every day but why the hell can't I just walk into a store & buy it? And they wonder why people pirate stuff. (I haven't, nor will I). However, not true for all games. Just take Call of Duty 4 as an example - most seemed to migrate to COD5, and then come back to COD4 in my experience. because cod5 was s***. |

Yep whoop that's usually how it works. But what I've found through experience, is that sometimes you're looking for some old movie, or even a game...you just gotta have it, you're possessed about it. Then when the big day comes, you've finally got a copy of it, by any means, and when you play or watch it, you are so disappointed because it is so old. But there are exceptions. Recently I re-watched Alien (the 1st one) and I really enjoyed it. But when I had to see the 1st Ghost Busters (I'd never seen it) recently, I was so let down. Games can be like that to. Since my first post, I was so bent on getting a copy of VBS1.0, just because I had used it in the service. But on reflection, compared to what I've seen on YouTube in the last two days, my thoughts are...VBS1.0 what's that? |

Well with the plethora of information you have provided us in a non-related thread, I'm sure the answer won't be far away.
