So, besides the usual rubbish people spout of paying off the mortgage and buying friends and family stuff... blah blah blah.
A common thought among people is to donate a ton of cash to charity. So here's the challenge: how do you determine who is in greatest need? Even $90 million won't go very far when applied to the poverty and desperate circumstances much of the world's population find themselves in. So, how to go about determining need? Trust the UN? Not too sure about that - they'd spend all the cash on focus groups. Which charities / groups of people are at the top of your "must help when I win the lotto" list? I think the top of my list would be helping provide clean water to communities that don't yet have it. Unfortunately that means bam! the money's gone. I can't however think of a bigger impact that $90 mill could have. |

I wouldnt give any directly to any charity, well maybe a little bit to a childrens cancer charity or something like that.
I certainly wouldnt give to any charity even remotely connected to any religous organisation, I just dont trust them. I think the only way I would give would be to donate directly to familys with sick kids who need money for an operation or something. |

On 2nd thoughts i would pay the public liability insurance for the qgl, so we could have another Lan and book the convention centre as venue.
The poor are still getting f*** all , maybe Queensland cancer fund will get a few bucks. |

I wouldn't give to the mainstream charities (Red Cross, Salvos, etc). I'd probably focus most of it into charities that help children and the disabled. Maybe even do your own charity and give direct to families that need the money through paying for medical expenses and so on.
I read an article a few weeks back about an almost blind guy who wants a street lamp installed so he can walk home from the bus stop after he finishes work for the day but the council can't afford it (asif). So instead he either has to finish when it's daylight (probably pissing off his boss) or get a carer to take him home. The carer ended up being a guy affected by mental illness who is doing his best to give back to the community. People who do selfless acts and are genuinely needy would get my coin. |

Hmm I like the idea of donating directly to the families who need the money for operations etc. Think my money would mostly go towards cancer, sick kids, clean water and the RSPCA

Ever seen those places that give away food to families that cant afford it ?
Id give some money to them. Meals on Wheels too. 90 million ? That is an obscene amount of money to win. Why cant 90 ppl win 1 million ? |

Does that only help stop one cause of it? IE silly girls who don't have protected sex and contract HPV or whatever it is? There's something on ACA or one of those tabloid shows about it at the moment, there's reported deaths of girls who have the shot. Pretty small number though vs all the people who've been given it. |

I would set up a low Risk, Low yield account with however many Mil (dependant on winnings.) Every year, 1/2 the interest on that account goes to a Charity the other 1/2 gets re-invested into said account/portfolio.
As for which specific charity, not sure. Our family has been pretty lucky health wise and all that. Maybe help a 'Developing' country. What I do know though, I wont give any money to c***s that just call me like telemarketers. Want my money? Knock on my door have a chat and chances are i'll hand over a couple of bucks. |

As for which specific charity, not sure. Our family has been pretty lucky health wise and all that. Maybe help a 'Developing' country. This is the tough thing for me - help Australians? Or help people that are completely f***ed. I have been interested in malaria for a while after watching this amazing docco about what a lame problem it is and how it's so hard for developing countries to get the drugs they need to the people that need them. While I'd love to help my fellow Aussies, we sure have it pretty good (at least until Conroy gets his hands on our tubes and/or the rest of the Labor govt figure out a way to break the country, nbd) and I feel like maybe helping some other nation break out of a rut would be a pretty cool thing to do. This docco made it sound like malaria is just one of those things that could be solved simply by pouring the right amount of cash into the right places and then it'd just be f***ing gone!@# |

Like a few peeps said above, I would set myself up first to be earning a steady income, then invest a percentage of that income in various means including some to charity. Then I'd pass it onto my only son who would develop a heroin addiction and blow it all on hookers and coke. |

hmmm. I would donate some to caritas - religion yes, however, a recognised catholic organisation making a difference - particularly in Asia. Then i would invest in childrens sport by creating a Intitute of Sport where I live in Roma - massive talent, no opportunity unless the move to Brisbane. I live next door to Darren Lockyer's Old house and down the road from Artie Beetson!!! I also think i'd donate a substantial amount to QGL!

Friends and Family foremost, a very wide investment portfolio, including gold bullion stashes. I'd use the investments to make sure I never had to work again.
I'd then probably party hard for a few years and then looking for meaning in my life and use my time and resources ( not my money directly ) to help people ... like trog said, not Australian's, but people who really need help. Build schoolhouses, orphanages, clean water supplies etc etc in third world. |

Surprisingly most of us here are generous and have a giving nature which is nice to see. Odds are none of us will see $9 from the lotto let alone $90,000,000.00 so I just hope whoever does get it puts some of it towards the less fortunate and needy in the world.

lmao!! If I was on the board at Tattersalls I'd write a letter that could be interpreted that there is a conspiracy. Example: Dear Player, Then I'd find a staff member that was on the brink of retiring, having a baby or whatever, and offer them a healthy redundancy package on the proviso they send the letter out. The redundancy package is the marketing investment. The guy goes to the media, then you 'sack' the employee that sent the letter, and watch the dollars roll in from your cheap advertising campaign. What do you think, FaceMan? |

As I'm sure you are aware there is no such thing as a 'true' random number in computing. Im pretty sure most people dont know this fact, i've tried to explain it to people, that a computer program cannot truely generate a random number, how its always seeded by something, which is where the randomness comes from, but they just look at me with a puzzled look. |

I bought 4 tickets yesterday so that's 4 times more chances to be disappointed when those numbers dont come up.

so its a 1 in 45 million chance to win, so technically u could buy all winning combinations, but would they actually allow you to do this?

They reported on Sunrise this morning that someone in Europe (I think) did that recently. Spent $1m on tickets to gurantee he won the $1.7m prize, which he did. I guess lucky no one else won it and shared the prize or a loss could have been coming his way. last edited by mission at 12:10:35 30/Jun/09 |

I bought one ticket with seven specific numbers. Cost me $1.10. You could buy all 45mil tickets therefore for $45mil, give or take, the problem is that 20mil or whatever tickets have sold already (which is one of the reasons the jackpot is so high). So Oz Lotto protects itself from someone backing the field by design. |

See this is what I was working out today... if there are (I think) 45 numbers in the punt, and needing 7 numbers for division 1, wouldn't the odds be: 1:228,713,284,900 ? edit: the gold lotto website reports: http://www.goldencasket.com/how_to_play/chances.asp 1 in 45,379,620 So f***s me what I'm doing wrong. last edited by casa at 12:28:47 30/Jun/09 |

If they were that high, nobody would ever win. Maybe you've worked out the odds of getting all the numbers in a specific order? |

Maybe... I'm no math wizz but: You have 45 chances of getting your first number correct, then 44 chances to get the 2nd number correct, (as there is one ball missing), so 45x44 = 1980, then you have a one in 43 chance to get the 3rd number right (as there are now 2 balls missing), so 45x44x43 and so on, 7 times for 7 balls = 45x44x43x42x41x40x39 but yeah im probably doing something wrong. edit: cheers shad, now you've confused me, where did 5040 come from last edited by casa at 12:35:41 30/Jun/09 |

7 * 6 * 5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 = 5040 the number of combinations 7 numbers can come out.

I don't know what lotto rules are or anything I dont play.
But I'll state some rules to work some theories off: Lets say there are 45 balls Lets say you pick 7 numbers Lets say they draw 7 balls. (i'm pretty sure thats close) Ball 1: 7/45 0.156 No disputes there. Your chances are literally you have 7 numbers and there are 45 balls. Ball 2: [(38/45) * (7/44)] + [(7/45) * (6/44)] 0.8*0.15 + 0.156*0.14 0.12+0.02184 0.14 Total chance to match both balls would only be 0.156*0.14 = 0.02184 Not sure if thats the actual maths, but essentially you had a chance that one of your numbers matched up on the first ball. We've got to remove that chance, It happens in 7/45 times leaving 38/45 times it to not match up and get normal probability. Now think about that. Now think about ball 3. All that has to happen again its exponential. The outcomes at this point are - you matched 0 balls. You matched the first ball. You matched the second ball. You matched both balls. You have to represent them all. PS: I failed maths B in 2003 so my numbers are probably wrong etc. But i'm pretty sure you'll need to represent your chances dropping off as you play on as your numbers run out as well as represent the less balls in the pit. |

1 in 45,379,620 is correct. 45C7 on your calculator (combinations). In discrete mathematical terms it's: nCk = n! / k!(n!-k!) So for this problem: 45! / 7!(45! - 7!) should equal that 45mil number. |

Getting back on topic for a minute (save the probabilities for the other thread): Something else I've thought about for a while is actually starting a charity to send condoms and safe sex instruction stuff to Africa to try and help with the AIDS epidemic (not to mention the other benefits of reducing population growth in areas that can't afford to maintain children in good environments). I've been planning to do a bunch of research about this to find out if it's worth doing but on the surface it seems like an interesting idea. |

I can also confirm doob's random number generator picked out 45 for me. Once in the System 10 (go go 210 in 45mil chances) and in my 12 game quick pick.
I was talking with a mate of mine and I started playing around with numbers and worked out that after I take my slice for investments, pay out friends debts, set up the family for life, drop 10mil in a trust fund for future ticcys then I'd still have about 50mil left over for my charity. So god, buddah, Ishmal, Ala and whoever else is listening - cough up the ponies to me and I'll be sure to spend a good chunk helping out the sick and needy. |

A couple of attempts at giving away free condoms failed for the following reasons (these actually happened):
Then you've got the shamans (witch-doctors) claiming condoms are a white-man plot. Some of these "recognised" medical practitioners have told patients that having unprotected sex with babies, children, virgins will cure them of AIDS. <-- Not a joke, such occurrences are widely reported. |

Check out south africa trog, free condoms all around....hasn't stop the spread. I work with a couple of SA's and some of the stories they tell...whoa! Apparently garlic is an AIDS cure...eat s***loads of it and you're cured. Or have sex with a virgin and you're cured. Or wash it off really well and you're cured!

it's only tax free for the FIRST year as far as I am aware... and then you are taxed on all income/profits relating to the initial win.

it's only tax free for the FIRST year as far as I am aware... My understanding is that the money won from gaming is completely tax free and then you are taxed on all income/profits relating to the initial win. Income from investments are taxed regardless of whether they are from lotto or not. You should be paying tax on interest off that 90M from the first year. |
