I'm there around the 10th August. Getting some good snowboard time in. NZ is f***ing cheap as ATM because the dollar is bulls*** against ours.

Hey, I've just confirmed a trip to Brazil for a mate's wedding in Sept, so no way I can afford the time or money to go to NZ :( Heartbroken. Yesterday I had to sit through a presentation of a PhD student studying in Salt Lake City, where they average 12metres of snow a year. f*** it made me wanna strap my boots on.

I agree. I have always had wayy better snow holidays when I was staying on the slopes. I've been to a few of both - and this year living 20min shuttle from the slopes, I didn't ski nearly as much as I should have.

That's cause you guys are lazy f***ers though who probably prefer to sleep till 10 rather than make fresh tracks.

I guess it's probably also that you're spoilt in terms of snow experience. I'd kill to be able to drive an hour a day to the slopes, but I guess if I did that for a couple of weeks on end I'd get over it.

waht the fk, you guys are dumb. perisher, smiggins, falls creek, canada, japan, all these places are just as good WHERE you can stay on the slopes. i fuking stayed at jindabyne and it was fking balls!

get up at 10am? fk that, i get up at 6 EVERY day (even on hols) and do sht, if i can i would snowboard all day until dark. even still, that time sleeping in until 10am, i would get to the slopes quicker than you would and had to drive there. bitch

Out of curiosity, how much strain does it put on your knees etc? I've been invited to go snowboarding with my brother, but I'm a big guy with a dodgy knee (4 dislocations and counting). How badly am I likely to f*** myself up if I go?

(Other injuries that may be of concern: torn discs in my back and a slut of a shoulder that dislocates at the drop of a hat)

I understand that it will work out your legs and knees bigtime and you need to have a reasonably good fitness level, hence why im hitting the gym two - three times a week before I go.

Hey JMR, wifey is looking into rates for you and holly today. Will do you need accom as well. Let me know.

f***en epic first day back up the mountain, I missed both opening days because I was in dunedin with the birth of my daughter.

Got to say this, the remarks managed to open homeward on the first day, something that hasn't been done in nearly 15years, snow quality was really good yesterday. The stash looks amazing at the moment and even the bottom of the big rock drop has coverage. It has receded a bit though but its been constantly cold all the way through with most days at the house at -1 to -3 avg

NZ skiing sucks.

Long drive to and from everyday. No trees so its easily closed out, always windpacked/blown. And if the weather closes in you can't even get up the mountain.

If you happen to be there after a bunch of snow and the wind has got to it and the sun it out, yes it is awesome. But with mountain wether that is too many ifs.

Falls Creek or Thredbo are my picks... but then I ski both Thredbo and Falls Creek used to be loads of surface lifts and boarders hate them.

Obes, I've heard of Thredbo (I think) closing for a week at a time because of weather two years ago. Was that just a complete irregularity?

I've been to NZ 4 times, and every time the conditions have been decent. Mt Hutt, Remarks, and Cadrona have all been great thus far.

Billy have you been boarding anywhere else?

Agree with the long drive being a bitch, but how is no trees a bad thing? I've done a bit of both now (tree and no-tree skiing) and I absolutely love not having f***ing trees everywhere! Plus, even with trees you can still get crazy wind ruining your day.

I haven't been to Japan yet - it's probably where I'll go next (once I recover from ~6 winters in a row...hate cold..)

Obes, I've heard of Thredbo (I think) closing for a week at a time because of weather two years ago. Was that just a complete irregularity?

I've never heard of it closing for a week at a time, but maybe it has.

I have been at Thredbo when it has dumped over 75cm in 1 night (the golf coarse and basins were insane the next day), yes the roads got closed (we were already there so it was fine for us). Roads were opened again a day or 2 latter. Thredbo is fairly low for Australia, 1200m roughly. So it doesn't take much for it to turn to mush. Salt and a plough clean it up quickly.

The only delay was in the morning making enough of a patch to get on to groomed/packed surfaces.

So it is possible for the roads to be closed but as long as you are there before it closes.

Falls Creek is even better ski in/ski out for most/all hotels. And a touch higher but still has some nice cruisey runs.

Took me and another guy about 2 hours to dig the car out and luckily it was in a garage!....

*edit*
"yes the roads got closed (we were already there so it was fine for us)" hence the massive advantage of staying on snow. Something that you can't really do in NZ.
