Yeah, it's not funny, it's common sense. You'd run a Uni without quotas for 20k people aged mostly 18-26yo would you? Interesting. I'd prefer quotas over access restrictions any day. |

i'm surprised post grads get unlimited. I knew professors get unlimited, because some prof's account somehow got into the hands of students. It's pretty much became a master account to students.

I used to live on campus at a college there at UQ.
Internet quota from UQ Connect was terribly expensive in 2005, then They changed it to $10 a GB. I used to be going up there every other day buying more quota. As far as I knew there weren't any sites that weren't counted towards download limits, then again I didn't really download much, most of my quota went to playing wow/cs, as we had DC++ for sharing stuff which would fetch speeds of over 12MB/s, was delicious. |

postgrads and the like (phds/other) get no limit Yeah I'm one of these. Only downside is that some content is blocked from certain places, seemingly randomly. For example I'm blocked from visiting QGL/Ausgamers from my lab, but I have no problem in the office. |

parabol - are you in the school of ITEE? Yeah. Funnily enough my office which has no problems accessing stuff is in GP South (ITEE headquarters), but the place where I can't access some stuff is in the Hawken building labs. Maybe they have a different ruleset for laboratories ... pretty strange as I use the exact same network account at both places. |

Yeah, it's not funny, it's common sense. You'd run a Uni without quotas for 20k people aged mostly 18-26yo would you? Interesting. Most Universities in Australia don't have strict quotas. Instead they just limit ports if your account downloads too much. Oh, and if they catch you going to sites that you're not allowed to, like porn or warez, they can simply phone the police. Why ruin a good thing for everybody because of one or two f***wits in each year? are you a professor at UQ parabol? Professor is a title that actually means something in Australia. Chances are he's a Postgraduate student, Research Assistant or a Lecturer. last edited by typo at 23:19:33 25/Jun/09 |

QUT has a strict quota, if you go over it you get shaped. It isn't big, but you can buy more if you want.

are you a professor at UQ parabol? Nah, just a PhD student. Have slightly better privileges than course-work students: crazy-long library loans, unlimited web access, shared office with desk, chair, computer. Not as good as what regular staff are given though - we don't get free flu vaccinations, library-fee immunity, etc. |

Yeah QUT is like $5 per gig or something, I usually chuck $20 at it at the beginning of semester and it lasts.

If it's connected in any way to AARNET chances are you won't get any decrement against your quota for it - if it happens to come off Ausgamers for some reason, I have no idea why it wouldn't be counted towards your quota - staff or student. It all goes through the same metering system in the back end as far as I'm aware.
I could find out if you're really really keen to know, but then they'd probably find a loophole and close it for you ! |

I could find out if you're really really keen to know, but then they'd probably find a loophole and close it for you ! well it'd be nice, but not worth the loophole fix. its not like it was small either - i watched the starcraft battle report - it was great. except for the annoying accents and oh ok to PINE. i think that was slightly better, cause you didnt have to open the inbox to see if theres any new emails |

Yer ITEE block qgl/ausgamers on staff wireless VPN too, its a pain in the ass
Not as good as what regular staff are given though - we don't get free flu vaccinations, library-fee immunity, etc. You should get flu vaccinations, RHD's are essentially staff at UQ, not sure about the library fees though. |

You should get flu vaccinations, RHD's are essentially staff at UQ, not sure about the library fees though. Nah, the vaccination emails usually say: "The free flu vaccinations are offered to continuing and fixed term contract staff; this does not include casual staff or students" In terms of library fees, if we're tutors that semester then our Staff card will be active at the library and we're immune to library fees. Stop tutoring and the staff card is disabled next semester ... |
