This is a Parliament Petition to not raise automotive rego in QLD.
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House to the Government's changes and increase to the cost of vehicle registration renewal. The pass on effects will force people, who can least afford it onto an already overcrowded public transport system and hurt businesses. Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to revoke these changes, help strugglers and businesses rather than hurt them and find another way to raise revenue and grow Queensland. EPetitions_qld-PetNum=1211 yea, they need to get money from somewhere, but I pay enough for my car and bike to be on the road :| |

Pretty much. The rego increase wasn't exactly SMALL. 13-14% increase in one go??

I ain't signing without more info. Why is rego being increased? Is it to encourage people to use our s***ty public transport system or find alternative ways of travel, like walking or riding? If so, good.

Isn't QLD $75 billion in debt?
As if they're going to take back the rego increase, the money is already spent. I found it interesting when Arnie came out earlier this year and said California was broke, they were ~$25 billion in debt... California's economy is on the same scale as the whole of Australia combined. So yeah, we're up s*** creek without paddle, don't worry about trying to stop this increase because there's going to be s***load more just around the corner. Next time, don't vote Bligh in you nubs. |

The state is in debt, the money to keep us afloat has to come from somewhere.
I'd rather pay a bit more for fuel and rego than have Capt. Bligh sell off Energex and QR. |

is that it? qld's mines don't produce enough royalties so the government can rack up $75b in debt. Queenslanders now have the highest motoring taxes in Australia.

qld government is spending money on infrastructure, we'll be fine in a few years and have some nice roads to show for our money Which is great for those that can still afford to drive! ^^ I would rather see them cut spending ... or here an idea instead of just increasing things to pay for it, maybe optimise spending? I mean a friend of mine who holds a "slow/stop" sign takes home a LOT of money (granted he does 8 hours days, 6 days a week, which really isn't that much). |

The pass on effects will force people, who can least afford it onto an already overcrowded public transport system and hurt businesses. Isn't this a good thing.. all the people who can least afford rego can also least afford a decent car that has good emissions and doesn't break down and cause massive traffic delays. Raise the rego and remove poor people from the roads so the middle class and above can drive home in peak hour in less than 2hrs! :D |

I'm happy for registration costs to go up and up and up... along with license fees should also jump a bunch aswell.. might actually leave driving to those who don't want to drink a bunch then smash into people.. the kinds of people who might actually indicate to change lanes etc... Higher costs associated to driving is a good thing

I guess there isn't really. But I just can't look at a number like 75B at state level and think that a spending spree is a good idea. I used to love cheap QLD regos when I evacuated from teh NSW :(

Which is great for those that can still afford to drive! ^^ If you think petrol is expensive now, you're going to be in for a rude surprise. I would rather see them cut spending Do you understand the impact of this? If they cut spending thousands (perhaps 10's of thousands) of people will lose their jobs. When thousands of people lose their jobs they can't afford to spend money so service based business suffer, like retail and ISPs. Because the service based business is struggling, they need to let people go, which causes the cycle to continue and compound. Now, all of a sudden a metric f***ton of people aren't paying income tax or GST. Which leaves both the Federal and State Government with a lot less income. Which, according to your ill-informed and ignorant bulls*** opinion, would mean that the Government should magically spend less. It's not like we haven't seen this before. History has shown us many, many, times that if you simply reduce government spending suddenly, you f*** the national economy and you f*** it hard. Like Obes f***s his mother hard. or here an idea instead of just increasing things to pay for it, maybe optimise spending? I'm sure it's easy to say these things, but it's another thing to actually do them. Even at this points most abstract level, learning how to optimise their system, would be a multi-million (if not billion) dollar task. Let alone working out how to actually implement it in a way that won't be a total cluster f***. I mean a friend of mine who holds a "slow/stop" sign takes home a LOT of money (granted he does 8 hours days, 6 days a week, which really isn't that much). Standing around in the sun for 8 hours a day spinning a sign around is one of the most s*** boring jobs I can possibly imagine. Consider the fact that they have to stand in that s*** during the middle of summer/winter and all sorts of weather situations that most sane people would prefer to be inside for. Also, the guy works 48 hours over a six day week, that he probably gets penalty rates and overtime; and that drivers are, collectively, a bunch of suicidal f*** heads. So, how much is "a lot" money? If he gets a base of $25 an hour which, off the cuff would seem pretty average for that kind of work. Well, considering the 6 day week and assuming he gets benefits like holidays and sick leave, that equates to $62k p/a. Imagine if he got half again as a combination of penalty rates and over time? That would be nearly $90k p/a. The thing that stands out is the six day week, he gets a 20% increase in his annual wage for giving up 48-52 days of leave per year. last edited by typo at 11:35:23 25/Jun/09 |

So in other words, we are f***ed economically. I don't think we're f***ed. Our debt is slightly higher than the recession we had to have, and what Howard did to the economy when he was treasurer. We've been in this space before, and we've pulled through. It's going to be rough. Most of Gen X graduated school into the 91 recession, and most of the Gen X (and some Gen y) got arse f***ed by the dot.com crash. We'll get through it, but it won't be pretty. |

Queensland has no reasonable prospect of ever repaying $75b in debt unless our economy hyperinflates. In a good year, with strong revenue and GDP growth the Qld government might be able to run a budget surplus of $1b. So we would need 75 years of strong budgets to repay the debt.
And that's not even counting the extra interest charges that this debt is incurring. Beattie failed to plan and now under Bligh (who was his Treasurer and Deputy) all the chickens are coming home to roost. A golden period of booming mining royalties and GST has been squandered on an explosion in public servants, stadiums and massive pay rises for public sector employees, far beyond what private sector employers could ever afford. That will be this Government's legacy. |

typo I believe you are in the general ball park (a little under) although I am not 100% certain on per/h pay I know it is a nice pay per/week.
Yeah might be a huge job to sort out some of the money wasting in gov departments but I'm sure if they did a ROI even over a few departments it would come out to be a good investment. I am fully against selling off assets as this "might" look good on paper now but it is just creating more issues later down the track. Once the new turbo goes on the injectors go in and I get around to doing a retune I'll be thrashing the rice burner on the weekends also!!~~ |

I'd like to correct my statement about the QLD economy debt thing. As someone who no longer lives in Queensland, and doesn't watch the news, I was unaware that the QLD governments debt was expected to rise to $85b by 2012. I had thought when everybody was crying about 65b, they were crying about the national debt. Yes, Queensland is f***ed.
Queensland's GDP during a mining boom (and we're a rich mining state) was $166b. Bligh's analogy of recommending kids to get into very high levels of debt to purchase infrastructure is broken, because while parents/society may recommend it, it is the choice of the individuals to jump into that much debt. Nobody forces you to sign up for 85 years of repayments. Minus interest, that's a $20k tax burden for every queenslander. |
