Max Payne 3 wasn't on show at this year's E3, so not having had much info on the game, it's a bit of a surprise to see the first screenshots look nothing like the noir Max Payne of old.
"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."
Looks more like a chubby Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell than the iconic "taking a dump" angry face of the original Max. Check out all the images on our Max Payne 3 game page.

I choose to think of this as another guy who happens to have the name Max Payne. Changing the entire look of a character doesn't work for me. There was nothing wrong with him in the previous 2 games.

Oh my god..why...why would they stuff up the character model.
He looks terrible. Why bald? Why fat? and why only wearing a singlet and awful pants?
Yeah sure hes gone through some hard times but f*** me...theres nothing appealing about this design at all.
If i wanted to see some old bum get down to some gun fights Id go down the road and set off a vietnam flash back on some Old homeless war vet.
Max payne series are about style and awesome...not...this..
Sorry That just my own opinion. Biased rant ends here

My gut reaction was similar to the opinions expressed above - "why change the character?" But then I read the blurb, and I think it sounds potentially awesome. Imagine Max Payne a few years later, having turned to booze to get through the hard times, and basically having just stopped caring about himself. Bring on a reason to fire up again, and you get a Die Hard With a Vengeance style response! w0ot

yeah but also look at the setting dude.
One of my other gripes with this new approach to the series is the setting.
In the first 2 Max payne games, the story heavily focuses on the idea of a dark new york, noir setting.
Nothing says noir more than gritty streets of new york, rain sleet or snow, with a femme fatale.
Instead we get bright sunny Brazilian jungles. It looks more like Uncharted 2 than a gritty noir themed game with an intense dark character.
I can see what they were trying to pull off with the new Max payne character design, but..its just soo distant from what the original character is. Nothing left behind to even hint at what he used to look like.
Again..sorry for rant. And thanks Martz for welcoming me.

Meh I couldn't care what he looks and sounds like as long as it is fun like the previous games.

Yeah it's a great place to set a game but whether or not Max Payne franchise is the right vehicle for it is another question. IMO they are just using the popularity of the name to sell a new game, I'd say this is marketers meddling because they don't have the balls to support a new IP.

I think we're all thinking too deep.. if the gameplay is good and enjoyable, then that is all that matters right??

also as long as it's got slow mo then i'm a happy camper.

Martz, you haven't thought about it enough until you have at least 10 edits in your post.

See post #13 for details.

Surprisingly, they havn't changed his face at all. (body and hair etc is obviously different)
