Did anyone get the numbers tonight by any chance?

Turns out that there are millions of people like me out there who didn't and are inundating the golden casket website, effectively ddos'ing it of sorts..

I just called my dad who had also just been called by my sister asking him, but he didn't even watch it. Le sigh, I want to know if I can blow off work tommorrow.

The other taxes I pay cost way more and don't give me a 1 in 45 million chance of being rich, they just take my money on threat of imprisonment then demand it again twelve months later.

If you remember this thread I play these numbers weekly on Saturday now. I buy ten weeks at a time ;-)

I am all over probability, I have a high-level maths degree. Two actually. I know I have more or less no chance of winning - but not everything in life has to be logical! And I spend more on alcohol too and I don't have much to show for that. So stuff the haters!

I dont understand why people go, oh theres a 1 in 45 million chance of winning, you are stupid for playing, they are kinda missing the point.

Surely its not just me who gets a few minutes of pleasure thinking about what I would do with 50mil and it costs a few bucks to play so realy, its not like you are gonna go broke.

And remember someone does win, go ask them how stupid they feel buying all those lotto tickets.

If I do win, I'll be driving around in my gold plated rocket car.

No, there are lots of people out there who are dissatisfied with life and need an illusion to give them an escape. Sure, it would be a life changing experience to win $50million or whatever. But seriously, if you're not living the life you want to live. Change it. I don't see the point of living a life where you're not happy with what you have.

Jesus christ, you dont get it do you. Maybe you are living a relatively happy life, working hard, getting ahead, but the chances of you ever making 50mil are pretty low.

Thats ok though, you walk around thinking how much smarter than everyone else you are cause you dont buy lottery tickets.

Ever since the $30mil popped up a few weeks ago I've been running the syndicate at work and we managed to pool the money for a System 10 this week but alas no dice! However next week we'll be just as keen to give it another crack.

We all know there's a ridiculously slim chance of winning but it's a bit of fun for a few dollars. Besides, if you don't buy a ticket then you have without a doubt no chance of winning!

Pinky, any chance you can do some probability mumbo jumbo on a System 10 ticket for me (where you get 10 numbers in a game and not just 7)?

I've bought a lottery ticket before. My wife has bought a few. I don't care if people buy lottery tickets or not. I was making an observation about you.

Its funny though, I had a debate at work about roulette. Almost everyone said they would not bother laying down a bet on a number in roulette because the odds are what... 38-1 in favour of the house. But they'll happily play the lottery weekly.

You're only comparing odds to odds and forgetting bet to payout. I wouldn't bother betting $20 on a roulette table to win a couple of hundred, that money would be spent by the end of the night and end up on the steps of the casino. Drop $5 and potentially win 50 mil, thats worth bothering.

Surely as the prize goes up, your chances of winning a lot of money goes down? If more people play as the prize goes up, then there is a higher chance that more people will share first prize (and the chance of multiple people winning are completely disproportionate to the odds of winning).

Confirm?
mission

The odds of winning remain unchanged.

But as you said, more people in the draw mean more chance of multiple winners and therefore the prize gets split.

However with $90m on the line I think you will still win more in Division 1 than most weeks, even if it is shared.

Last night 32 people won division 2 which was about $26k.

Well...
You have a 1 in 45,379,620 chance of winning and its what $1 a ticket ?

If you had a spare 46 million you could guarantee a win, and if you had done that last night you'd have made 4mill from first division, plus a heap of division prizes.

But there is always the risk that some one else wins it.

Everyone entered to win the First prize but nobody did do now there is a 2nd draw and you have to pay Again to win the prize ?

you can buy direct from the golden casket website, i believe it costs no more than instores.

ive been used to using http://www.ozlotteries.com/ for years before golden casket went online, so i have been using them still (costs abit more per ticket) but i usually only put it on once in a blue moon when there are decent jackpots. (ive been playing for this current oz lotto jackpot since it was $20m).

When it comes to a $90mil ticket, do you really want your results stored online in a database? I know I wouldn't considering if I was responsible for that DB I'd do whatever I could to change the ticket to my name :D

I pay $4.35 per week for a System 7 (my Nan's six numbers and my soccer shirt number).

It's not little to no enjoyment for me. My gf and I always forget about it and then we are like, "OOOhhh, maybe we won the Tattslotto last week!" and we usually end up checking the last couple of weeks. And we talk about how we would manage a big win and so on.

I also do it for my Grandma previously mentioned who is currently in hospital. I usually ring her and say, "We didn't win Tatts this week, Nan." as my opener, haha. Something to talk about.

So I pay roughly $230/yr to play Tattslotto.

I also play poker and bet on soccer. I have a spreadsheet and strategy for soccer and log and calculate statistics for that by cut and pasting the results out of Sportsbet into Excel using this Firefox add-on: TableTools.

Probability of winning tattslotto, there are 45 numbers and you need 6 of em to win Div 1 so there are 45C6 possible winning combinations = 8,145,060 combinations. So you have a 1 in 'that number' chance of winning Div 1.

System 10 is ten numbers of which any combination of six numbers will do the job = 10C6 = 210 possible combinations. So you have 210 in 8,145,060 probability of winning.

Buying no ticket gives you no combinations which is zero in 8,145,060 probability of winning.

Any questions? No questions, good. (That's what my Russian maths teacher used to say...)

Here's my current soccer strategy - not successful but slowly declining. I am about to start a new strategy actually.

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9602/80534475.jpg

Starting balance $50.00
Total amount bet $420.00
Amount won $389.08
Net result -$30.92

Number of bets placed 210
Number of wins 100
Number of losses 108
Win percentage 48.08%

Average bet odds 2.03
Average result -$0.15

Balance 6 mths from today* -$12.69
Balance 12 mths from today* -$32.92

Don't buy them online, you have to transfer money to an account they set up for you and you pay for tickets out of that account. Plus you have to go into a store and sign some s*** anyway to verify you exist.

From Tatts site:

To win, you need in one game
Div. One - All 6 winning numbers
Div. Two - Any 5 winning numbers and one or both supplementary numbers
Div. Three - Any 5 winning numbers
Div. Four - Any 4 winning numbers
Div. Five - Any 3 winning numbers and one or both supplementary numbers

um billy, I haven't done probability maths in a long long long time. However I am pretty sure the more you play the greater your chanes are of winning.

You buy 1 ticket you have 1 chance of winning.
You buy 2 tickets you have 2 chances of winning

BUT just because you have played 1000 games before now, your chances of winning in the next one are the same as everyone elses, because they are independant events.

ie. the chance of a 1 win out of 1000 games is greater then the chance of a win out of 1 game. But games that have already been played don't count for anything.

ie. lets call winning week 1 A and winning weeks 2 B, both draws are independant
And to have won a draw you need the P(A or B)
or P (A u b)
or P(A) + P(B)

Like I said haven't done maths in ages, but I am pretty sure that's right.

Yeah, that's how I read Billy's post too.

I don't think because my Grandmother played the same numbers for 20 years and didn't win that somehow I am due for a win. I know every game is mutually exclusive - I did probability in Year 11 just like everyone else, and then more probability again in my engineering bachelor.

However, the fact remains, you still have to be in it to win it.

Heh, from the same school of thought as the "I'll keep playing the most frequent numbers in my games because they must be lucky!" entrants.

Statistically, playing the most frequent numbers after they've become most frequent numbers doesn't work.
