British gaming blog/site RPS have a sort of preview for the new codemasters racing game fuel. The guys goal was to circumnavigate the game world to get an idea of whether or not fuel lives up to the hyped size of 14,400 km². This sounds really boring until you learn just how long it took him, plus its kind of funny that he tried to do it in one sitting... here is a map of his adventure complete with drive time between locations:

Driving at the in game speed of ~70MPH. (in the starting car) EIGHT f***ING HOURS @(*&$#. I cant think of any other game that comes even close, aside from flight sims, which have a fraction of the topographical detail.

The full article is here - http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/06/22/fuel-around-the-world-in-eight-hours/

I haven't really heard much about this game but this has certainly piqued my interest. Pretty good video showing off graphics/the map available from trogdor's cave.

Reviews are rating it poorly.
-One example

IGN review

4.0 Presentation
The map is riddled with stupid design issues and many of the "unlockables" are rather pointless, especially given the time it takes to get them.
7.0 Graphics
Fuel can look good from a distance, but up close you'll see lots of pop-in and some bad texture work here and there.
5.0 Sound
Tire screeches sound like an alien screaming and the engines are bland and not helpful in telling how fast you're going at time.
5.0 Gameplay
The racing elements can be OK, though highly uninspired, but there are AI problems and so many other issues surrounding this that it's just no fun at all.
6.0 Lasting Appeal
It would take you forever to find and collect everything, but you definitely won't want to.

Söldner: Secret Wars map size was 6500 x 3500 km (made from topological maps of the Bering sea area) - and look where that got 'em! (Answer: nowhere).

They also had destructive terrain which caused a laughable drain on the server. The detail wasn't as nice as Fuel, but for its day it was well up there with decent gfx.

The one single advantage of having such a ridiculous map size is that you only have to load the level once ;-) Then each level is just played in a different area of the map = zero loading time.
