apparently anyway..
According to this link, computers purchased after a specific date which have Windows Vista preinstalled will get a free upgrade to Windows 7. “Some people may not be able to wait for Windows 7 to arrive before having to order a new PC (like parents who are sending their sons or daughters off to school who need of a PC to take with them). Fortunately, there is no need to wait. Soon, customers will be able to take advantage of the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program. This program enables participating retailers and OEMs to offer a special deal to upgrade to Windows 7 for customers purchasing a qualifying PC. I’ll be [providing additional details] about this program with a date and more details when we get closer to availability,” promised Brandon LeBlanc, Windows Communications Manager on the Windows Client Communications TeamHas anyone else heard of this from any other source? There's no mention of any specific dates in the article, though according to this link it says: June 26, 2009 through January 31, 2010 *If that really is the case then it might be worth waiting a week or so before purchasing your next computer (provided that you do want Windows 7), or at least until they set a post purchase date in stone. But then again I also read that you'd be entitled to a free upgrade only if you purchased a new computer 1 month prior to win 7's release on 23rd October. You can thanks Acer for apparently leaking win7's release date (which is yet to be confirmed by M$) Also is it a worldwide upgrade? vendor dependent? standalone OS or just an upgrade disc? some many questions so lil time! Looks like i'll be holding off my laptop purchase until a week before uni starts, unless someone gives me some damn answers before then. |

When you buy OEM copies of Vista it comes with the free upgrade aswell (make sure it does or you getting ripped off). Windows 7 RTM rocks.....so much better than Vista.

What do you actually need to buy to be able to buy OEM versions of operating systems? Do you need to buy a whole PC or could I go and buy, say, a new video card, and then get the OEM version of windows with it?

I've got licenses for both Vista x64 and Win 7. Ended up choosing and installing Vista on my new PC last week as the driver support isn't quite there for Win 7 yet as you'd expect so early. I'm not really keen on trying half-working beta drivers for fundamental components (motherboard, chipset drivers, etc).

wow, vista is that good hey? HAHAHA Thats They always do this. Its nothing to do with the OS, its because people traditionally will stop buying Laptops and Desktops because they know there is a new version coming out. FYI - Its $35 for shipping in Australia. |

Wouldn't the upgrade be a bit crappy compared to a proper fresh install of Win7?
I'm always suss on the 'upgrade' thing when you are just updating the current OS, surely, as I said above, a fresh full Win7 install is the go. I'm looking at getting another laptop (damn kids and computers at school, back when I was a boy we used an abacus, a piece of string and a couple of empty bakebean tins......) but I think I'll wait until I can get Win7 from the start, or maybe a Mac (should I choose to bleed from the anus). |

Using a technet win7 here.
I have to admit, its pretty damn fast, and steam/tf2 boots up very fast and plays well. |

So do you have to back everything up etc before you do the upgrade, or will all your shizz still be there? (obviously back up for 'safety' reasons anyway) Does it just wipe Vista and install Win7 leaving all your data etc in tacked?
And if you needed to do a recovery do you have to put on Vista and then Win7 or can you just chuck on Win7? I'm still suss that it could be a major pain in the arse. |

Made sense to me? I guess if you're used to a single white iBox saying "You'll have what you're given and like it" its hard to understand :) Shrug. Given the amount of OS versions they release, a matrix is probably the only way to display the info at a glance. No doubt there will be (probably already is?) a tool that will explain your upgrade for the machine you are using. |

btw the errors in the offical MS verion are.
There is no 64bit Windows Vista Starter edition. And the chart which mentions "developed" countries, there is no Vista starter at all (it's only in 136 developing countries) And while not a true error... While you can't do a direct xp to 7 upgrade you can actually upgrade from xp to vista to 7, and it apparently only costs $10-$20 more then 7. Made sense to me? Are you serious ? The first version is the official Microsoft one. The second is the same information with errors removed and it simplified... and a million times better. last edited by Obes at 11:29:19 28/Aug/09 |

Don't know about "proof" but two laptops recently bought with preinstalled Vista come with free windows 7 upgrade when its released.
If you buy windows vista standalone now you get a free upgrade. At least the last few months suggest that.. edit: this thread is old wth last edited by skythra at 12:09:56 28/Aug/09 |

why the f*** would you ever upgrade an OS install Because Vista to 7 is more a service pack then a new OS and a cunning way to cut support on some older OSes while re-marketing an under performing product? |

You've obviously not done a Vista to 7 upgrade obes......fresh install is the only way. Way too much left behind fron the upgrade.

No, what I mean about that matrix is... USER CONFUSION 101.
Think of the difference between XP versus Windows 7. Two versions, not two version s of each of six editions. IOW, I just wanna upgrade, how do I upgrade? Well if the square root of -1 multiplied by your edition and build number is more than the ∫B.∂l then you get it for free. last edited by 3dee at 13:00:57 28/Aug/09 |

alternatively take first digit finger, move it to version of vista you have, take second digit finger move it to version of windows seven you want, move two fingers together and where they intersect is to upgrade/custom.
I know, logic isn't part of the product they sell at apple. |

Yeah that matrix is pretty darn basic to understand :/ I'm a programmer. I know how matrices like that work. But a lot more people aren't programmers or whatever else that makes it easy to understand that table. It just looks too complicated for a majority of people who don't even understand what the hell 64-bit or 32-bit is. |

No, its not hard to understand at all 3dee. You seem to consistently assume that computer users are a vast sea of retards populated with tiny islands of understanding.
Do you have any source to your assertion that the 'average' Windows user doesn't know whether their OS is the 32 or 64 bit version? We've only been hearing about it since Windows95.. Edit: But a lot more people aren't programmers or whatever else that makes it easy to understand that table. Primary school times tables wil familiarise you with that sort of cross-reference lookup. ELITE KNOWLEDGE. last edited by Hogfather at 15:29:02 28/Aug/09 |

I work in a computer filled office. I know a lot of people who would have next to no idea that a computer is not a hard drive. Restart? How do you do that. I have to explain everything not remotely intuitive in the most simplest way possible, and even then it sometimes goes straight over. Lol.
