I love how they make it sound like a great deal when it's just $5 off a month for 12 months. And that's only if you get the bodgy bottom of the range box.

You know what would be a good deal? If they made it so we didn't have to pay for a s*** load of channels I don't watch just so I can catch a few games of NRL a weekend plus the odd rugby or soccer match.

I wouldn't mind getting the Hi Def Discovery and National Geographic channels (a great warning sign of old age - wanting to watch documentarys :P ). Unfortunately To subscribe to HD Explore you must upgrade to FOXTEL iQ2 and you must subscribe to Get Started and one of My Playtime or My World or My Escape.

Which means for the 2 channels I want, I need to spend around $70 a month. Balls to that.

I think in Europe it's legislated that PayTV providers must offer each channel separately to consumers. Don't necessarily understand the legislation, but it's good for the consumer!

The other thing I can't stand about Foxtel is the constant self-promotion advertising in shows.

If you dont have Foxtel
You dont really love TV.

Im on the Basic + My Showtime + My Sport + My Escape + 2nd box (no IQ) = $108

Dont really watch much FreeToAir 'cept for SBS/ABC
FreeTo Air channels include ABC2 SBS2 ONE(in a couple of weeks)

FreeToAir is Welfare TV.
6pm-11pm is really the only time you get quality programming and mostly only in Rating Periods.
Foxtel always has something on.

Downside is commercials (mostly for other Foxtel programs) but no commercials in Movies or on Showcase which shows TVSeries commercial free and often double episodes.

And of course there is WWE + TNA

Not worth it for the odd doccos they do show. The rest of the time it's re-runs of pimp my ride type shows.

Also, you need iQ2 for the HD tuners, or you wouldn't get the HD docco channels anyway.

Meh, costs more to goto the movies and eat a small meal once a week then it does to have foxtel.

so what you're saying is that, by having foxtel you sacrifice going to the movies?
cause if you're doing both, it's costing you even more

imo, its a waste of money unless you're spending lots of time watching tv
& if you're spending lots of time watching tv, you're wasting time

time = money, so foxtel sucks

Just putting it into perspective, it's not *that* much money. I spend more on smokes. I'd spend two-three months worth of foxtel on one decent night out drinking heh.

I'm off work waiting for an operation. If I didn't have the internet and Foxtel I'd go mad. Though I've always had Foxtel, works out cheaper then going to the pub every night for entertainment :)

don't get me wrong, I'm not a mrhardware-style tight arse penny pincher (LPG LOL) but its just another $100/month service

it's almost as much as my electricity bill or my council rates etc
I try to keep those kinda bills down to a minimum so on my weekends and holidays etc, I have more cash to go do things that have absolutely nothing to do with TV

In purely time=money terms $100 a month for foxtel is basically like going to the cinema once a week, so if you watch more than 2 hours of foxtel a week its cheaper than the cinemas.

That said, whether foxtel offers enough value compared to FTA is debatable.

My parents have had foxtel for 10 years purely for rugby coverage.. they happily hunker down each friday, saturday and sunday to catch super 14, six nations, tri nations, november test matches etc... they recently got the iq2 and now make 'full' use of the service.. that is they now actually consider watching other channels since they have the ability to record/timeshift etc... best money they've ever spent if only for the rugby alone but being able to use the full service makes it more worthwhile then ever

But if you didn't watch any foxtel, would you replace each 2 hours worth of foxtel with a trip to the cinema? NO you f***ing wouldn't, you'd still go three times a year and save OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS.
Also what f***ing cinema charges you a hundred bucks... you need 12-14 people in your family! Oh 4 times a month - still.. they don't even have 4 movies a month.
DO YOU WORK FOR FOXTEL posting s*** like that?

$12 to see one movie = waste of money
$12 per week for dozens of TV channels = better Value

The larger the family the better the value.

Basic package alone is a waste. the sweet spot is Basic + 2 packages.
You can rotate the packages every month if you like so if your sport is out of season you could transfer to movie channels.

yeah, im just biding my time till a service comes out, or foxtel repackage their current plans, that lets you pick individual channels.

a small base channels selection would be fine, fox8 + news for example.

I would then add on

Fox Sports
HBO (in this perfect world these channels are all available)
Shotime (the American cable channel)
Sci-fi Channel
NBC + CNBC News/Business
CNN
BBC
Skynews + Sky Business

Also, in this perfect world, this would all be HD, i wouldn't have to pay more for getting my content in the format it is created, instead of getting it down scaled by default.

You don't go out once a week? The cinema was just one example. I'm sure many people like myself would find it hard to go out drinking on less then $100 for one night. A taxi alone costs $50 for me to get home, if I was a girl and only drank four drinks there's another $30, some late night munchies are another $10, entry fee to somewhere another $10. I guess this is a total waste of cash and I should sit at home every night every week and stare at infomercials run on FTA because having Foxtel is such and idiotic thing to have.

Wow, people seem to be quite pissed off that other people don't share the same viewpoint. If you can't afford it or don't have the extra money laying around don't get it. If you can and do and make use of it then get it.

SRS GUISES YOU f***ING HAVE TO f***ING AGREE WITH ME OR ELSE ... f***!

It's a discussion Syco. People are allowed to have different opinions and can either choose to justify them or ignore the rantings of others.

There is no "OR ELSE". It's a discussion. The whole point is to have different views. Foxtel watchers seem to just want it all spoon fed to them.

I was more referring to thermite getting a little upset above. I edited my post to include him.

I realise people can have different opinion dude. It's just pretty damn funny when people get so upset at someone else spending three bucks a day on foxtel instead of a quarter cup of double mocha from their favourite coffee shop :)

Edit:

ara, check out these guys they're a fair bit cheaper then Foxtel. I'm not sure they do any HD and they don't have the wide range Foxtel do but could be a viable alternative if cost is a factor.

you're missing the point .. not uncommon

but lets say, i went out and spent $30 on drinks, $10 on food, $10 on entry etc (your example figures)
and you did the same

then.. when I go home, I have sex
when you go home, you watch foxtel

you're out another $108 that month on top of what we both spent on going out/drinking

Only cause it'll get a rise..

my parents comfortably enjoy their rugby from their lounge room without having to go out to grounds to see the game/pay admission/hassle with transport there and back.. not to mention skipping plane flights to south africa for test matches, trips to nz and europe every year to see the games.. by your reckoning they're a bajillion dollars ahead of you just for getting foxtel each and every month (so for some there is 'value' in the service)

i like foxtel, id much rather pay for it (with its ads, lols) than waste money going to the moofies:

so there you have it folks

foxtel > paying for going to the moofies;

argument over;

I don't spend every second of my life away from home. If I can afford it (hasn't been cut off yet I guess) then what's the hassle?

Can always have sex after foxtel :)

Edit: Also my example figures are way off. It's normally way too much on drinks for me, then when I'm drunk way too much buying everyone else freaking drinks "Who wants a drink?".

the whole Foxtel saves me money argument is pretty dumb.

if someone wanted to save money by staying at home they could do it without getting Foxtel. i don't know about you but i have developed methods of keeping myself amused without resorting to the television.

if these methods don't work, one might even download something they WANT TO WATCH off the net, then watch it instead of surfing through the channels of Foxtel looking for something that is worth watching that they haven't watched before.

IMO, Foxtel as it is current packaged = waste of money.

I'm not saying it saves me money. I'm saying it's comparatively cheap compared to other lifestyle activities. It's less then what some people spend on coffee on their way to work per day...

I <3 you thermite

I've always thought pay TV was a bit of a crock. Unless you spend a lot of time in front of the TV (and I mean a LOT of time, like "I am unemployed and have no life" time), then it just isn't worth it.

Yes there will good programs and movies on Foxtel a long time before they hit FTA (if they ever hit FTA) and yes there will be more sport than any one person can handle, but who wants to spend that much time and money staring at a box anyway?

If you're not happy with what FTA has to offer, then maybe you should pick up a book, or go out, or talk to the person/people you dwell with.
