Topic: Need a builder and tiler

Finally getting around to finishing off the bathroom upstairs that has been half finished for far to long.

I have an electrician all lined up to do 2 spotlights, normal light and heat light, 2 powerpoints and hard wire the spa bath ($522.50 fitted and supplied. Is that a good price?)

the bathroom we have mostly done ourselves so far but we need a builder to pull the roof out and put a new one up (after the wiring is done), and put fibro up on a few of the walls.

Does anyone know of a good builder who does good work for a good price? The job is relatively small as there isn't that much building to do, new roof, 2 fibro walls and a couple of architraves.

If someone is knows someone who could do this, please let me know as we are trying to keep the cost to a minimum. (Single mother with a house mortgage since the devorce).

Or is the pulling out the roof easier than what I think it looks like? Over the bathroom there is wiring and insulation, which are the two things I'm wary about.

After the building and electrical is done, it also needs tiling, does anyone know a good tiler? We have chosen the tiles that we want and are just waiting to finish the walls before we buy the tiles. The bathroom was a small bathroom until we renevated and pulled the wall out between the bathroom and toilet to turn it into a larger bathroom.

If anyone can help me out or know someone or a good company to go through. Let me know :)

Cheers,
slink

ps. House is located in Geebung

Not a builder (yet) but I'd strongly recommend finding a builder first and getting him in before you get s*** wired up / installed. There's a lot of things that might need to be changed (structurally).

bff for lyfe. I've seen you driving around pave. As I'm sure you have probley seen me.

Yeah, I'm planning to get the builder in first, but the electricians need to come in before the new roof is up.

Sorry to hijack, but I'm interested in this too. I have high ceilings and they s*** me, how much to put in a ceiling?? say 4x5 metres, inside a 2nd story apartment with solid concrete and iron walls.
Also sound proofing between the existing ceiling and new ceiling would be a big plus.

Yes, by roof I mean ceiling.

Probley not as much. But a lancer with 18" lenzo rims with extractors and a kicker sound system? It doesn't stick out like a saw thumb, but it turns some heads.

thermite: getting rid of high ceilings is probably a great way to reduce the value of your apartment, if you're planning on selling it in the future I'd have a good think about whether it's worth it. they are generally a desired feature in homes/apartments. i'd look at visual things you could do like apparently there are different roof and wall color/tone combinations that can reduce the appearance of high ceilings.

Slinky. PM me your contact details and I'll get in touch to have a look. We have a number of builders on staff here and some of them are looking for smaller jobs on the side. I might be able to put on of them onto you but would rather have a quick look first.

Why? I don't understand why you want want to lower a ceiling, high ceilings are the go, give a better sense of space.

If it's primarily for sound proffing/reduction fair enough (but you'll also have to attend to the walls)

Slackers, I'm only 22 and I've put in new ceilings and done my own tiling. Ok, unless you know how I wouldn't actually recommend doing your own ceilings, but tiling is pretty straight forward if you have the time!

is the spa on its own circuit? ie is he adding in a new circuit purely for the spa?

spotlights? u mean downlights?

its an alright price. around 100 dollars in gear. it depends on how much roof work to say how good a price it is :)

Except that it is wasted space. It's just a big empty area above me I can't do anything with. If I had a ceiling there would be a cavity where I could put boxes and s***.

Now that would ACTUALLY BE having more space.

But yes it's mainly for sound proofing, and being able to put in furniture/lights/racks/cabinets without making them go all the way to an unreachable area or looking silly.

The sound issue is because the roof is made of tin and it makes a terrible 'pinging' noise all day long that drives me mental. Also birds and possums. I know the ceiling won't fix that, but it could muffle it enough not to be so overbearing.

Currently the gap between the ceiling and roof is like 1 inch, and no insulation, no wiring, no lights, nothing.

If it's primarily for sound proffing/reduction fair enough (but you'll also have to attend to the walls)

Sound does not get through the walls, the walls are great.

What for? The Internet successfully calculated the mortgage for the apartment, why can't it calculate the price of the ceiling? What could a contractor possibly need to see by coming here? Probably just to suss out how much he can cheat me out of.

Nah, not on it's own circuit. The pump isn't that large and shouldn't need it's own circuit but the cable for the spa needs to be run through the wall/ceiling so then it can be wired to it's own switch on the wall.

Yes, when I say spotlights I mean downlights.

I just checked with my mum and grandfather, and most the electrical cables have already been ran. It just all needs to be hooked up.

Self done tiling is great for a few years. Then you drop a cup or something in the right spot you screwed up the grouting and it brakes, others come lose etc etc.

Atleast read a book and pay a lot of attention to it if you decide to do it yourself OP. If you want a GOOD (probably not CHEAP heh) tiler send me a PM and I can give you a number.

so hes charging u 400 dollars for probably half an hour of fitting off

its like a 15minute job to setup an isolator for that spa

45minutes = 450 dollars

10 dollars a minute, =/

although i haven't seen the job (has he?) and theres prob a couple of reasons hes quoted that much

i hope

^^ That was the price he quoted me for parts and to do all the wiring. I have since found out all the wiring is already in place as it was done before my grandfather retired. So I presume if I asked for an another quote the price would be less.

Also that quote was going off just my description of the job, he hasn't actually seen it.

Holy s*** thermite, that's a bent perspective even for you..

True story (no dragons). I walked into a guy's house the other day while in Brissy on business. Old mate had made a good pile of monies in the 90s and had a very nice house.

Aside from the usual trappings of wealth, what made his house spectacular was the massively open space after the entryway. They basically had a regular 2-story house of open space as the main open plan area after the foyer, with f***off massive windows overlooking the grounds at the back of the house.

To my credit I was gawking around the joint like a rube from the burbs :)))

Anyway, I'd love to have a house with MOAR open space not less. A ninja could fly a dragon around that house and it was awesome.

opens space for the win:

first thing we did with our place after we moved in, was knock out wall dividing lounge/kithen/dining room and made it one big open space;
