Guys what you think of this, absolutely f***ing obsurd:

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/815780/bar-owner-not-sorry-over-theft-charges

she faces 5 years in prison if convicted of stealing a bar mat from a club in thailand.. musta been a good mat to be worth it! if she did it during the day, the sentence would be less as she did what the thai people call a "night time theft".. how f***ing primitive is this lol

if it's 5 years for a barmat then it's gotta be about 20 years for say, pot in a boogie board bag.

Yeah I saw that yesterday. You'd really want to question going to that country when things like that happen.

The other lol news article this week was Donald Trump sueing a reporter who reported in an article that he is a millionaire when he claims he is a billionaire...... f***ing americans.

i read somewhere this is because of the fall in tourism over there due to the recent political unrest.

this has in turn made all the cogs in the law system a bit lighter in the pocket at the end of each month as there is less greasing of palms so they are turning on the tourists that are there.

No one forced them to go to a foreign country, get blind, steal a bar mat (lol prank whatever) then run away from the police and generally be difficult.

I've never understood why people go to these backwater countries, sure she stole, but its a f***en bar mat.

In the end its the law so I guess she should have obeyed it, but they realy are shooting themselves in the foot considering alot of there money comes from tourism.

I think it was more to do with the way she behaved when she was confronted by the police. One article I read said she ran from the police, then when she was arrested she abused the police + some sort of head of police etc.

imo It will only affect the opinions of bogans, I am not sure how much of a benefit the bogan is to their economy.

yeah, she was being a real bitch to the police over there. Some aussie guy was saying in the news last night, if she was to just sign the papers they would most likely give her a fine of like 3-400 baht which is like $100 aussie..

Dont give a s*** if they get the maximum penalty... you should act cool in other countries rather than a stereotypical aussie yob.

I am never going to stupid asian countries like thailand and indonesia. They're stupid and need to get with the program.
I wish there was something they needed me for over there and I'd be like "no".

Anyone traveling overseas should be aware of the 'their country, there laws' policy. Enough idiots have been f***ed over for minor crimes in other countries for this to be a standard thought when boarding an international flight. Seriously, if you don't know the consequences, don't f*** up.

Well most people would just assume they'd get kicked out of the club and still get to keep the bar mat. Ignorance can be very complicated when you are used to things being a certain way.

All the people saying their laws their country. Does that make stoning OK? No it doesn't and a mother of four potentially getting 5 years jail for stealing a bar mat (no matter how rude she was) is ridiculous!

Im not debating the legality or anything im saying its down right f***ing stupid.

I wouldn't go there just on the remote chance of being implicated in some s*** I had nothing to do with.

5 years for a bar mat? Tell 'em they're dreamin'.

I saw one of her friends on TV just then, he was trying to defend her yelling at the police when they came. "I'm sorry if loud voices offend people in this culture, we didn't realise" or something.

Bulls***, scream at a cop in a Brisbane club while drunk and see where you end up.

Of course. You would still be carted away. Just sounded funny him pretending you can be rude to and yell at police here. 5 years is crazy but I can't help but think they could've handled it a little better. Apologise and give the barmat back, respect the cops etc instead of going off on a tirade at the police acting like a loud foreigner.

anyone who goes to the watch house for random s*** gets let out in the morning with a nice court date set for them for a charge of public nuisance.

not always, had plenty of mates locked up and get public nuisance charges. about the same about get locked up and told to f*** off int he morning. seems luck of the draw, or maybe the mood of the arresting officer or something like that imo.

"night time theft".. how f***ing primitive is this lol

Committing certain offences at night here is an aggravated factor too. Get a clue. Second, don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Don't steal anything/smoke drugs/etc and you'll come home. Capiche?

More like 15 dollars. Anyway it is pretty easy to stay out of trouble over there. Must be a stupid drunk bitch.

Also if you read any thailand travel guide FAQ or the internet the first thing in the book is 'do not yell or point at people'.

Even if you get caught sling the coppers a few bucks (price depending on mistake).

Edit: news.com.au article

According to Phuket Wan, a news website in the Thai resort town, Annice Smoel was given a six-month suspended jail term and a 1000-baht fine for theft in a ruling today at a provincial court.

The jail term will be stayed for one year and if Mrs Smoel does not commit any crime in Thailand for the year, her jail term will not have to be served

yeah because everyone knew that if you steal a bar mat you'd get 5 years imprisonment lol... well at least we all do now haha

not to mention some people who get drugs planted on them and spend years in prison, not talking about Corby.

the penalties in asia are horrendously over the top.. get a clue, capiche?? lol

The penalty is irrelevant. She had to have known what she was doing was wrong, and would be liable for punishment of some sort. No sympathy here.

Second, it's not for you to judge the penalties. They are sovereign nations, within their rights to elect governments to set laws as they see fit.

I don't think the law there gives a f*** whether or not you know what the consequences are. If you f*** up, you will be punished, hard.
Unlike here in Australia, it seems the severity of the punishments aren't in accordance with the severity of the crime.
It is showcased in every news article where a foreigner has committed a crime in Asia. It's not a new thing. People seem to be testing the limits of the law there, to see just how much they can get away with. News story after news story, it is obvious, you don't get away with s***.

abusing cops

Pretty sure that under the circumstances she probably would have been locked up for a night and released with a fine of 1000 aus cents. But because she probably gave the guy some lip, he probably went "f*** this s***, some bitch comes into my country, gives me lip and steals our mats? I'm going to do all i can to teach her a lesson in f***ing arrogance."

are you perhaps getting confused between the locals that work there and the guy that owns the bar? The f***ing first paragraph in the link in the OP says "Aussie expat Steve Wood"

Heh, I honestly wouldn't give a s*** about her in those circumstances. Accept some responsibility, ffs. All thatmatters is that she's in another country where the rules are different - so just bloody grow a brain and act appropriately, or don't go to that country.
