Topic: I woke up to a smashed rear drivers side window this morning

So i woke up this morning and went out to my car. Only to find a completely shattered rear drivers side window. Seems some local f***wits thought it would be amusing to smash someones rear window for no reason at all.

I have no idea what they used but the impact area on the glass splintered the entire window and its holding but my door is full of glass shards i can hear it rattling around when I open and close the door.

Now because I am guessing the repair is going to be less than my insurance excess which is around 500 dollars I have no choice but to pay for the repair.

Does anyone have any idea what replacing a rear window in a 02 VX commodore might cost or can anyone recommend any places that can help me out.

Cheers.

You sure it was intentional? We live on a busy, narrow street and that's happened to about 3 different cars from mongs just driving past.

I dunno if this falls under 'smash repairs' since it's just the window, but there's a place at Rocklea which quoted half the price of the other 6 places I got quotes from when I needed some damage repaired. It was called Sureway Smash Repairs but I'm not sure if it's changed hands since then...

+1 for double garages

You should be able to replace it yourself if you're keen enough. Go to the wreckers, (a pick-a-part not an over the counter one) and learn how to install one by removing one. go home with said window, and reverse the way you got the new one out.

Buy a windows from the wreckers/Spare parts place and replace it yourself, it wont be hard.

Edit: what mr hardware said.

It was intentional. I have had an egg and a maccas coke thrown at my car before when I parked it right outside my house. I have also seen other cars in the area with eggs and what not thrown at them when parked on wide roads outside there house. I usually park in the driveway but made the mistake of parking on the road last night.

I should set up a webcam outside a window pointing in the direction and catch the license plate of these f***s. I think its the c***s down the road. A house of young guys all living together who hoon around all the time. I have reported it to the police before but they don't give a f*** about it.

FYI this is Albany Creek so if anyone has any information about these f***ers, please share.

They're pretty easy to replace with half an hour and a 6 pack of beer. Just be careful removing decals and what not. You don't want big scratches all over the doorskin etc.

if you have a comprehensive policy call your insurer and ask if they do glass claims with no excess. most of the large insurance companies have that as on option on their policies, if you've taken it out they will replace it for free (as long as you haven't made a similar claim in last 12 months, usually).

I have come back from a holiday to a smashed driver's side window. Apparently dude up the street thought it would be appropriate during his argument with his wife to take it out into the street, walk down the road, and smash a car window with his fist. My next door neighbour watched the entire thing and then went and cling-wrapped up the window for me.

Yeah usually a windscreen/window will attract a lower cost excess than other things.
Usually the age excess won't apply if you're not actually driving the vehicle, ie if it's parked and it gets stolen.
And if you have a free windscreen option usually it will be for all glass not just windscreens.

Holy s*** where do you guys live?!

I'm not that happy with our area - we'll probably sell and move in a few years. There's a few younguns that do burnouts and s*** and once when we went away for the weekend some wags got pissed and moved a metal 3-seater chair from our veranda to the street - presumably to watch some shenanigans.

But I haven't seen anything deliberately broken out of malice ... that's f***ed up.

a) f*** someone off a great deal in traffic to the point where they'd follow you home/find out where you live?
or;
b) f*** someones;
b1) wife
b2) cat?

I rang AAMI who I am insured with excess fee of 500 dollars is only waveable if I filed a police report and the police find out who did it. Which is next to impossible.

No, As i said a few posts up it has been an ongoing issue in our area with other cars and not just mine. I made the mistake of parking on the road last night which I hardly ever do.

Long story Short it is costing me 320 dollars for an on-site repair tommorow morning. Obrien turned out to be the cheapest as they charged the same as everyone else but do the repair at my house for me.

Me and my dad have a good idea of who it might be and I am going to talk to some of the neighbors about it because they have had similar s*** happen.

It just guts me that there is a******s out there who think it is OK to do stuff like this for there own amusement.

the rear left hand quater panel glass (if you look at the rear passengers door they have a main window and that tiny trianglular shaped one) cost me $450 to replace it in 2006.

That was the works, a second hand window, but replaced in the carpark at my work by a mobile obriens. the theives stole a friends copy of FFX-2 (she never forgave me for that, but f*** it the game was horrible anyway) and about $3.80 in change. They left a whole lot of receipts thrown throughout the car.

I got robbed another time when everyone who left their car unlocked in the street got robbed. Again they took like this time maybe $8. At least when i left the car unlocked they didnt smash the window.

The two breakins were about 200KMs apart. (one in NSW one in brisbane)

Still $450 to replace that window meant i didn't go out for several weeks.

yeah i always make sure my insurance premiums have free glass cover
costs an extra $60 a year, but my insurance premium has paid for itself in the past two years just on glass alone.

You don't happen to know a Crackett family do you? 6 sons in the family... Anyways, used to work with the mum and they mentioned all that happening in their street just a little while ago. Her sons busted some kids with the eggs and the police were supposedly sorting it all out.

while i haven't replaced a window, i have replaced a door which involved moving the window from the old door into the new one.

i would follow mrhardware's advice and go to a pick n payless type wrecker, find your model of car and get the glass from the window and replace it yourself.

good learning experience, just remember to take your own tools there.

Well next time wind the window down !

yeah ask a few neighbours. Its in everyones interest because d*******s that do stuff like that will likely move on to break n enters in the area.

It is funny you mention that because I have had my car egged and I have seen other cars egged. I am going down to the police station now to file a report. Might be a waste of time but anything I can do to find out who did this I will.

Do it yourself.

Get the glass from a wrecker and spend your saturday afternoon getting it in and lined up. Save yourself a packet.

I think it is the guys up the road who like to drift around the corner @ the top of my street. Pretty sure it was them because they have thrown s*** before but we have no way to prove it.

Go smash all their car windows in one night. If they go to bed late, do it at 5 in the morning.

f*** I hate petty vandal c***s. One of the worst crims IMO.

Make sure you're 100% positive about who they are before you 'talk to the neighbours' about it. If you are 100% positive, rain down on them.

Tiny, sounds like AAMI have f***ed you on your premiums. I work for a large insurance company part-time (uni student) in the motor claims department, most of the big insurers do free glass claims (1 per year) for a very small addition to your premium. Look at switching insurers or electing that option on your policy.

Tiny I'll be seeing that lady probably tmrw or Friday so I'll ask her then who the people with the eggs were in case they had something to do with your story. Can't remember what street she lives in, but it's one of the streets off faheys road west, somewhere around there. That anywhere near you??

Don't you hate it when people damage your car :(

Some cockface smashed off my driver side mirror.

Our street is TINY (under 100m) and DIRECTLY on the beach, on a Saturday/Sunday there can 20+ cars crammed in.

Can just tell some f***ing noob going to the beach trying to squeeze into our street with his fat ass kids in a 4wd smashed it off then buggered off asap without leaving a note :S

Fail.
