I just answered the phone(landline) as the other person hang up. You then can't find out who just called using * 1 0 #, as the call wasn't missed. It's happened a few times now, and it's pretty annoying. How the hell do you find out who just rang? There has to be some way, other than ringing every number in everyones address books that is.

I never understood that burning curiosity had when they missed a call and couldn't stand not knowing who it was. I always find it weird that some people will call an unknown number just to find out who it was that had called them. As far as I know, you can't find out if they don't have callerid stuff on, because they intentionally don't want you to know |

Hehe, the only reason I'd want to find out who was calling is if it was happening to the point where you have someone pranking/stalking/harassing you. Who knows though, maybe it's just a random occurrence and your number is similar to that of a local restaurant - so people dial to make a booking or get a takeaway only to find they've called the wrong number and hang up instead of apologising!

I want to know unknown numbers when I answer with my name and they hang up in my ear, personally I think it's rude to call a wrong number and then just hang up in their ear.
Oh and I am SICK of f***ing telemarketers calling and then you being on the line for 1-2 seconds going "hello....hello?" edit: Exo - lol, I just registered just then, because this thread reminded me! lol! last edited by Fireblood at 20:08:53 18/May/09 |

Thats research companies checking to see if anyone is home at that time.
Expect advertising calls now at the time you answered. |

um.
area code + suburb code + random number everyone knows the numbers 0-9, its not hard to construct them into a number and cold call. (these machines just call every number in the prefix 0000-> 9999) etc. |

Caller ID & google ftw really. We had the same number ring us 2 or 3 times last week, I got bored after another hangup and googled the number this morning and found this website http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/0394257999 Its mostly american numbers but there's a few aussies posting in there which is how I found out which bastard is going to cop an earful when they have a peon available to take the call when I next pick it up. |

Go over the top
Put an asterisk server into your house, next time they call, get their phone number. Then setup your inbound route to take that number and call a telemarketer or something and connect the two. Problem solved! :D |

Redial just calls the last person you rang up. Though we had a bout of hangup calls years ago, this one's just innocent. Also we haven't had any junk calls or the like since signing on the don't call register. I think I lifted up the receiver at the same time as they were putting it down. Epic bad timing maybe but I've done it before. Unfortunately don't have a fancy phone with caller id.

lol @ eds
infi, I know it's not the end of the world. However it's just stupid that you can't find out who just rang you, but you can if you didn't answer the phone. There are instance's where you want to find out, like if a lazy/forgetfull friend or relative who call's you for something. Then either dosn't ring back till the last minute or forgets outright, and then goes "oh I rang you but you weren't home". Particularly if they are the type of people who assume that if the phone isn't answered after 3 rings that no-ones home. Maybe you lost/forgot the person's number and need to ring them back? This has also happened to me recently with someone who moved house and had a new number. |

I'm with the telemarketer random finding out if your home theory.
a better question is, why do you care?! I never understood that burning curiosity had when they missed a call and couldn't stand not knowing who it was. I always find it weird that some people will call an unknown number just to find out who it was that had called them. Well, if you've got something for sale obviously you're going to have randoms calling you and if you're desperate for the sale you're going to want to talk to as many of them as possible. I, however, don't ring back unknown numbers when they pop up on my mobile which is why if I give it to anyone random on the internets I tell them to send me a text message first announcing who they are. |

I dont usually pick the phone up when it rings.
Im not a fan of phones and dont own a Mobile. My world hasnt collapsed because i dont have a Mobile but it never ceases to amaze me the way ppl will answer their mobile straight away wherever they are. Like its ALWAYS a life or Death situation. its an electronic Ball n Chain. will be worse when they all have GPS tracking. |

meh, anyways.. For me, answering the phone is an option.
If it's important, they'll either call back or bleed out If I'm watching a movie (at home) or whatever, I won't answer the house phone (soon to be extinct anyway) an if house phone is for me and it's important, they'll call my mobile. I rarely (if ever unless expecting a call) answer "private" numbers as well. If I could get my hands on a blackout device I'd happily carry it with me (an boost its range in a cinema). All I want now is a mute button for children and annoying people :) |

If I could get my hands on a blackout device I'd happily carry it with me (an boost its range in a cinema). And you'd be an a****** who potentially puts peoples lives at risk. What if you interfere with a doctors phone and someone dies? All so you could enjoy your movie. I bet you also like to stomp on kittens too. I dont usually pick the phone up when it rings. I mainly carry mine in case my car breaks down. The only time I ever use my mobile other than breakdowns is to text friends & ask them if they're home/what they're up to. Occasionally though my boss will call me up on it. I wonder if the owner of the phone will be able to access the gps tracker things? That'd be cool if you lose your mobile I guess. edit: About the life & death answer thing, my phone rings about 3 times then just hangs up with some message about not being available I assume and I don't have voice mail so if I don't answer it fast I don't answer it at all. I don't know what genius came up with that idea and made it so you can't easily change it but I'd like to punch them in the face. last edited by whoop at 23:43:44 18/May/09 |

It's good to have a mobile even if you don't use it much. Unless you're afraid of your wife being able to call all the time then that is understandable.
