AroundMe (Show's things like cafes, chemists, supermarkets, restaurants near your location)
BOMRadar (Weather radar from BOM)
Currency (Convertor)
Eventful (www.eventful.com frontend)
Facebook
Google Earth
IceTV (TV Guide)
IM+ Lite (MSN/Yahoo/Jabber/etc)
LinkedIn
MetroMelb (Public transport guide.. useful for you but might be a Brisbane one around)
PhotoSwap (Gimmicky bit of fun where you take a pic, send to someone, receive a pic, send another, etc)
Qantas 2 (Flight timetables)
RDP (Client)
Remote (iTunes Remote controller)
Shazam (Listens and analyses a song to tell you what it is)
TouchTerm (SSH Client)
Urbanspoon (Restaurant locator)

Utility style apps that I use on a regular basis: OzWeather, Facebook, NightCamera, Weightbot, Discover, iProRecorder

Games that are worth paying for:
Wolf 3d, iDracula, FlightControl, FieldRunners, ZombieAttack, Enigmo

There's a f*** ton of other fun apps as well that you'll use a couple of times or show to mates and then get sick of them, like shazaam.

Got my iPhone just the other day, so I'm a nub. But I've used and tried so far:

Stanza - my favourite iPhone app. Simply awesome eBook reader, there's a good utility to 'share' them off your desktop that will convert from Windows lit files etc.
Facebook - my FB usage has gone spastic since I got this thing. Mixed feelings about that.
XBMC Remote - Not free but f*** I love it, perfect XMBC remote control. Only app I've paid money for.
Ausgamers - because a Steve Farrelly blog is cool! Seriously..
Reuters - news that doesn't suck,
ABC - Aussie news that doesn;t suck. These carnts need to put more iPhone video content on, they block iView for iPhone :(((
Shazam - its a toy, you might use it a lot more for your sampling and s*** to find tunes.
AppMiner - better than the iPhone aoo finder thingy.
IGN - better than their bloody website for sure.
RDP Lite - what it says, terminal services for iPhone. Doesn't work that well on the mini iPhone screen tho imo, doesn;t connect to Vista+.
IntelliRemote - still on demo, and 24 bucks is steep. Probably won't buy it; XBMC Remote meets my needs better.
Fluid - mindless whooshy fun, good to show off the phone.
SpawnLite - See fluid.
Metal Gear Solid - will probably uninstall. Sort of fun I guess.

I sort of had a AppStore binge weekend..

ATC - Best time wasting game I've had on any phone ... ever!

Edit: But I keep ending up with a flat battery when the GF notices the mobile sitting around and opens it heh.

ABC is decent. As is BBC Reader, NY Times and iCricket
VNC, commbank, mbf, ebay, paypal, Wiifinder, Ping and the loo finding app

scramble and kingdoms are decent little games
Dots free isn't a bad pass the phone game either

the bom radar (not free anymore)
tuner440, iTick and GuitarChords (cool for guitar laziness)
Tides, Beacon and TnL (all good for fishing)

Night Stand was good too until I got a Sony (it was a gift) iPhone alarm clock. Turned my iPhone into an alarm clock with a cheap set of speakers and a cheap iphone dock off ebay.

One of the better apps I've seen released is Capsuleer (for Eve players). Not really useful beyond Eve though :)

Stanza is basically the only thing I use on my iPod touch, aside from Mail and the very occasional use of Safari.

Jailbreak it.

If you have an iphone and it's not jailbroken, you're doing it wrong.

WeDict - dictionary (I'm a grammar and English nazi)
Tweetie - twitter client (twitterfon is free alternative)
Brightkite - another social network thing that lets you check in as to where you are.
Nimbuzz - for instant messaging
Skype
commbank
memorystick - lets you map your iphone to a computer through wiFi
backdrops - interfacelift backgrounds for the iphone

TideApp, WindGuru, BOM Radar for fishing and checking out water conditions (I'm looking for an all in one app for this... anyone know any?)

Jailbreak apps:
Installous & Cydia - More apps
BossPrefs - more setting changes
qik - Record and stream video online
cycorder - record video
swirlyMMS - MMS
categories - lets you put multiple apps in a folder

OzWeather/PocketWeatherAU (choose your own flavour, I'm currently on OzWeather)
Metro Bris (QR timetables)
Night Camera (uses the accelerometer to detect when you're hand's steadiest, and then snaps pic)
AroundMe
Shazam
tvGuide
Flight Control
iProRecorder

PocketWeatherAU should do the trick for you.

Really? I am scared I'm gonna kill it and have to wait until next year to get another one.

What will jailbreaking let me do that I need to do now - or can't wait for 3.0 to do?

I found after having my phone jailbroken for a little while with a few apps would slow the phone down. After comparing my non-jb phone to my mates jb phone, there is definatly a difference in performance.

Alright, here are my favourite apps!

out and about -
Twitterific free, NetNewsWire, Facebook, IM+ LIte

Twitterific was recently updated, heaps better than Tweetie/Twitterfon imo.

at home -
Remote, IceTV, Streaks Free

Remote being remote iTunes control, IceTV a tv guide, Streaks being an implementation of Jerry Seinfeld's productivity secret

games -
Peggle $$$, Bejeweled 2 $$$, FlightControl $$$, iCopter, Fieldrunners $$$

I'd also recommend Convertbot $$$ for a beautiful unit conversion app - I've already bought a less cool unit conversion app. Weightbot $$$ if you're tracking your weight.

Things Touch $$$ is excellent for syncing tasks with os x, but The Hit List touch is coming out soon - I've been using the desktop client and it's great, so I'm expecting the mobile app will be even better.

At the moment for me...

IM+ (found this better than beejive)
Photoswap
iAmp Remote (like Remote, but for Winamp)
Remote
WunderRadio (online radio directory)
Shazam
Wolf 3D
Whiteboard (wifi shared whiteboard app, kinda cool)
Tap Tap revolution / revenge 2 (Guitar hero with your fingers)
Ocarina (play the iphone like a recorder - gets a reaction)
IceTV
Flashlight (JB version increases brightness of the screen)
Optus Usage (http://secure.corra.com.au/usage/optus/)
OzWeather
NYTimes
ABC
Flight Control
9 Toolbox (kinda gay, has 9 different apps in it)
Yammer (corporate twitter)
Tweetie (twitter)
Mover (share files with other iphone users over wifi)

I have a few other JB apps that ok, but I'm going to restore it soon, cause I have the performance issues already mentioned.

I tried Jailbreaking, and it ended up being more hassle than it was worth for me - constant crashes, apps always getting rearranged on the screen, had to restore a few times... argh it was terrible. And don't forget that the decent stuff that you get from JB'ing you still have to pay for. However, I do not need a "high-end" smart phone, so it might be worth the hassle if you want a few specific extra features and can't wait for 3.0.

Still bugs here and there buts is quite stable. Bugs are only minor or uncompleted new features.
Any news on the 3.0 release date?

Likely to be June or July.

i'm really f***ing impressed.. iphone rocks! can't believe it's taken me this long to get one.

any recommendations on accessories? prolly looking at getting a FM tuner/car charger.

Also I know itunes has a built in backup system, but are there any better ways for contacts/setting backups?

I have the Harman Kardon Drive + Play.
They have released a Drive + Play 2, which is better again.

Also bluetooth handsfree is handy if not already doing it.

You can set it up to sync with your windows contacts so you've got a copy on your boxen.

I had to blow my phone away f***ing around with JBing and shat my pants...f*** my contacts!.. resynced from my PC = win!

I have a skin/case on mine cause I have mine in my bag/moto jacket pocket a lot

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=729&products_id=8020
http://www.pccasegear.com/images/iphonetiger.gif
(I got mine off ebay though)

Best f***ing thing ever, fit is exceptional and tons of different colours.
Makes it a little fatter but it doesn't bother me even when its in my pants pocket.

Can someone explain how to get swirlymms working seems like a bunch of you have it.

I wanted to give the demo a go but it fails hard at obtaining a demo license. I tried installing swirlymms2 but it doesn't seem to be able to obtain a demo license at all even though the thing in cydia said "SwirlyMMS2 Demo" :/

It's "switcheasy" brand

It's like a rubbery sleeve with a hard plastic skeleton that snaps over the top of it.

All true nerds should set themselves up to sink google calendar and contacts over the air

http://www.google.com/mobile/apple/sync.html

It takes a little bit of extra effort to initially move your contacts into google but the advantages of having a single source of contacts and calendar info should be obvious.

Hell yeah. I now find myself monitoring internet usage by grabbing the iPhone sitting next to my keyboard and hitting one button V opening Internodes site, logging in, trying to remember where they hid the usage (is it just me or do Internode make really un-intuitive sites?) etc.

The other night I was laying in bed and remembered I left the PC on, I grabbed the iPhone and VNC'd in and shut the PC down instead of running out on the cold tiles in the freezing early morning.

I still think Steve Jobbs is a douche tough. "Flash is dead, no one uses it anymore" what drugs is he on?
