Holy s***.

I'd heard a lot of hype about the upcoming WolframAlpha search engine... but I didn't realise it was this awesome.

WOLFRAM ALPHA GOES LIVE TONIGHT OUR TIME (15 MAY US)

Look out Google.

An introduction to Wolfram Alpha by Stephen Wolfram

It looks cool, but it's not really a Google competitor (that's just some random on slashdot, but he explains it well). The video is pretty impressive tho.

It certainly challenges that facility in Google (e.g. 50KM in Miles) and extends it about 11ty billion times further.

Why should Google look out? It isn't really a competitor to Google ..

I <3 google

its too late for someone to try and take on google
you dont 'search' for something anymore, you google it

no one is going to "wolframalpha it"
linux is better than windows but the vast majority of people stick to what they know

So I watched the vid... at what point does it actually link you to a webpage? Isn't that the idea of a search engine trying to take on Google?

It's not a search engine, it even says it in the title bar of the screenshot. It's a computational knowledge engine. It derives facts you're looking for from data it has stored.

It's really really cool - but it's not a search engine.

So how are they intending to compete with Google exactly? I'm confused.

o rite, well then.

can't say I've ever really come across a need for this kind of thing
anyone got any examples of where this is useful ?

my general knowledge tells me the following;

1 inch is roughly 25mm (fixed)
1 mile is roughly 1.6 kilometers
1 yard is roughly 1 meter
1 foot is roughly 30 cm

1 cup is not my problem, i have a woman to cook and clean ;)

While it could probably keep me entertained for 5-10min finding random facts for random products I cant see it lasting much past that.

Does it say what accuracy the conversion data goes to? (Vid no work at work)

Well, it doesn't link to information, it displays it on the Wolfram site, and the data is sourced from the net.

So, it serves the same purpose as Google for some things, but it delivers the info in a different way (and sources are provided to all data)

it actually sounds like they are coping a google project..

i remember months ago watching something about google wanting to make its search engine able to give an answer

so for example you ask what is the capital of australia

and instead of web pages coming up it just gives an answer

google should just buy em out

Mathematica was developed in ~ 88 I think. Sergey Brin was an intern for Wolfram afaik.

In 1993 he interned at Wolfram Research, makers of Mathematica.

yep... he did.

Not really related to wolfram or google but for converting between measurements I've always found this useful if I can't get to the google unit converter.

Who needs to compete, just need to show google you have a cool concept and they'll buy it out with big bucks.

It looks cool, but it's not really a Google competitor (that's just some random on slashdot, but he explains it well). The video is pretty impressive tho.
Wow. That was a really good explination, thanks.
