Hi All,

Is there any way to create a more stable connection with ADSL2+?
It's a naked plan with internode, just got it all up and running but the dropouts are pretty woeful at this stage.

About 5k's from the exchange, started with their 'standard' stability setting, bumped up to high reliability and still had drop outs, though not as frequent...
Just set it to Very High Stability, waiting for it to re-sync.

My attenuation is pretty dreadful:

First number is Downstream, second is upstream...

SNR Margin 12 12 (db)
Line Attenuation 58 35 (db)
Data Rate 2839 773 (kbps)

It's frustrating to surf, but gaming would be impossible how it is currently.
Sometimes it will drop for ~10-15 seconds
Othertimes I struggle to get it to reconnect/sync.

There are no other items on the phone line except the modem - so it's already isolated.

I'd give them a call but it'd be the last one I can make - no land line currently (need to buy myself a voip phone).

I should point out, the data transfer speeds as they are I can live with, for surfing I can't honestly tell the difference between old Telstra cable and I don't download much raw data, so stability is the priority at this point.

(already dropped once typing this up :/)

Cheers.

Serious? Goddamn, that won't be cheap nor an easy fix :<
I just ran an extension cable under the house, though I bought a cable too long accidently (15m!) which added 1 db to my attenuation (doh).

Currently now on Very High Reliability (just re-sync'd)

SNR - 15/15
ATT - 55/35
DR - 2720/679

[edit] Mongie - is it more likely to be distance to exchange or wiring as you said?

D-Link DSL-504T

Guys at internode suggested changing to ADSL1 Very High Reliability (with their profile selecttion).
Trying that now..
Otherwise he mentioned something about locking the modem to GT blah something I had no idea what was... ?

get a linksys modem/rooter.

Would a different modem actually make a significant difference? I'd rather not dish out money on a whim that it might make a difference.
(I'd rather just go to a crappy priced broadband plan but is at least stable) :<

Currently - On the new setting it seems more stable;
Just tried to give QL a quick go to see what happened.. had one bried 'connection error' that last maybe ~2-3 seconds.. eventually I had a total hangup, though i think that was more firefox having a crash, though im not sure if a connection issue at the moment of a death precipitated it.

Spook: Unfortunately I don't think so,
I have access to the same type of modem but in the wireless version - but I don't think that'd help the cause.

I'm pretty far from the exchange (5km's) and the wiring in this house is pretty old and probably doesn't help, but yeah, I wouldn't have figured it'd have as much issues as I'm having now.

(Though as far as I can tell, I haven't completely dropped since changing to nodes ADSL1 Very High Stability profile).. Just that one hiccup in QL - And possibly it had dropped and caused QL to crash (I can't tell).

Well, that might help, but your speeds are still going to be crappy.

AFAIK, thats not exactly the greatest modem in the world. See if you can test with another one.

Mongie - yeah, I figured.
But at this stage, stability is important.
As is latency (which unfortunately is a little affected as well though).
Actual raw download speed I have the patience to humble along at ~300kb/s

Reading what I can on this modem and there seems to be a lot of forums of many people saying its trash basically.

fyi - i have found my Netgear DG834 to sync faster than my billion 7402VL... both are about as stable as each other.

D-Link are (i think) pretty dodgy... but then again, i've never used one... only heard things.

fyi, i was about 5ks from an exchange in my last house (big old queenslander in annerley)

i fried a netcom nb5 with all the disconnects and reconnects, and then my replacemtn netgear dg834 wasnt much better (lots of drop outs, just took the bugger longer to die)

when i got my billion, much more stable connection, much better sync;

Hmmm, can I ask for a recommendation on the billion spook? [Model type etc. I do mean] I might keep it in the back of my mind if I get fed up and exhaust options...

Seems stable at the moment for web browsing... if it's stable for gaming I suppose I can live with ~90ms pings, still beats the old dialup days!

[edit] I'll do a bit of research on that model as well, cheers mongie

Log a fault with your isp f***ing hell I do not understand this mentality.

Its simple drops can be cause by lots of things, check your filters first, check your modem, try isolating the line completely and have the modem only in it. Try resetting your modem and re-uploading the current config. Failing all that contact your f***ing ISP support.

Extreme Violence due to current illness.

Corrupt - Read further up, I did call the tech support; actually, twice now.

Their only last pieces of advice they could offer was to drop to ADSL1 Very High Reliability Profile. [Which they didn't mention the first time - only to maneuvre around the ADSL2+ profiles)
That or lock the modem to (some setting which I didn't get/understand being as my first ADSL connection)

*oink* ;]

Spook - Alrighty.

Just having a play around at the moment with the ADSL1 profiles...
Just re-sync'd with the low-latency profile...
Doubting it'll be stable, but I'll just play around, at least I think I've figured the ADSL1 Very High Reliability is at least.... usable :)

..

One Final Question though.. The filter/splitters (the non-central ones) - I have one here, should I be using it?

By that I mean, should I be using the filter/splitter even considering I have no intention of, and won't be adding a telephone to that extra port?
(I removed it when I was initially having dropout issues in an attempt to isolate possible causes)...

It says "ADSL Filter/Splitter DSL-12MF"
Its not from the same modem box exactly (Its from the Wireless version of this router).

if you are on naked you dont need any filters... are you on naked or naked extreme?

i would keep it on ADSL very high reliability setting as at that distance you wouldnt get any higher speeds anywayz

dlink filters are gay.
dlink modems are gay.
in fact... dlink is gay in general.

If you wanted to improve your speeds... you could invest in having Cat6 (or a higher quality, new) cable run from the network boundary, to the wall port.

If you have a cheap router anywhere from $70-$120 generally they are crap and will experience problems.

Run some brand new shielded Cat5 cable from your phone box on the side of the house direct to your router.

I'm confused, why would you use cat5 cable to the router? The ADSL cable is RJ45 aint it... or something like that; numbers/letters may not be entirely correct.
Only CAT5 from router to PC.....

cat5/rj45 from router to network port
rj11 (telephone cable 2 pair) from telephone socket to modem.

The idea is, you put the modem as close to the intial phone termination point as you can, and run a network cable from the lan port of the modem to a wallport (then a cable from that port to your switch, and from that switch to your pcs.)

What sort of housing are you living in? Are you able to see where the telephone cable enters the premises, or is it underground cabling/an apartment or the like?

I only mention it because on moving in to a new house recently, I found the wiring job was pretty shocking. Ended up disconnecting all the old wiring, running wiring for two new ports, and running the phone line directly from it's entry point under the house into a central splitter (which feeds the two new ports). Managed to get sync speeds above those initially expected for our cable distance to the exchange this way; we were getting less than half previously.

Course in your case, you wouldn't need a splitter, but the rest applies.

icewyrm - it's my own house but it's was built back in the 70s, and the previous owners have done god knows what with some of the things around here...
The wiring is ancient and I think re-wiring a new phone line might be on the cards.

$300 for a re-wire.

Try changing the modulation of your modem/router to G.DMT.... This is the modulation that is being used for ADSL1 which is more stable... You will really experience this kind of problem for ADSL2+ since you are way too far from the exchange.

About 5k's from the exchange
LOL... at that distance f***. Set the modem to ADSL1 for sure. It will improve your stability a lot.
Line Attenuation 58 35 (db)
I'm surprised they even hooked you up with that...

well all i can say is when i was on ADSL2+ and more then 5km's from the exchange it was pathetic even though the wiring on the house was good as it was a newly built unit. Sync'ed about 4000kbps regularly and dropped out every 20 mins easily.

Did all the usual things like a line test etc..., bought a splitter, tried another filter, plugged the modem directly into the main wall socket on a 10cm cable, upgraded router/modem firmware, tried another linksys, billion and netgear modems (from mates). All for the same result. The only way i got it stable was revert to ADSL1 modulation which didnt matter anyway cause i wasn't getting DSL2+ speeds...

Synced at 4000kbps still and was fine after that, im not convinced ADSL2+ or ADSL2 is stable over 5km's to exchange...

Now ive moved twice since then and am currently on DSL1 8000kbps and the same modem is working fine, syncing at 7000kbps ;) .
