Didn't see a thread about this, so I figured I'd make one where everyone can weigh in with their opinions. As the topic may imply, I loved it, so much better than I was even expecting, and Karl Urban was so great as Bones. I'm not even the biggest Star Trek fan, but yeah, fantastic movie.

Good to hear. I'm gonna check it out once it settles down a bit. Twas talking to a guy at work tonight and he said there were two f***sticks chatting behind him and it ruined it for him.

Normally I'd just watch it at home but this and Terminator will be cinema ones I think.

i meant to post a thread about this a couple of weeks ago, I went to an advanced screening (IRL at southbank). I thought the movie was incredible. I haven't been to the cinema in a while and i think this was the perfect movie to come back to.

I don't think that I have ever seen another star trek film (i was actually a bit of a hater, much preferred star wars universe) but the plotline is completely accessible because its a prequel.

Special effects were flawless, as I walked out of the cinema someone said to me 'how awesome was the CG'? And I hadn't even thought about it because I really just didn't notice it.

Comic relief was great, and fit well into the story. Transformers was a great movie, despite the s*** parts - ie the acting and the annoying as f*** special services army douche.

Also, did you notice the films they borrowed (shouted out to) from for star trek:

This is roughly in chronological order:
Thelma and Louise
Top Gun
Jurrasic Park
Star Wars (hoth)
Star Wars (obi wan)
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Star Wars (Did i spy some force leaping?)

awesome film, go see it everyone.

Yep I concur, it's fab. That Onion vid is hilarious but so true, so hard-core purists will have issues with this film. Stuff em I say - the cast is great, cool set and model design, great CG with a healthy dose of humour mixed in. It should make some serious bank at the box office..

Great movie saw it last night, a guy was selling 2 Gold Class tickets for $15 cheaper that cost at Birch because 2 of his friends couldn't make it.

Excellent movie, just felt abit out of the loop when everyone was cheering and clapping when certain characters came on screen( not that big on the old old Trek); more of a Picard and lesbian dominatrix Jayneway kind of guy.

Apparently they don't do much technobabble? I say f***ing hooray for that.

Knowing a bit about physics and science makes you cringe when watching Star Trek.

I liked how when the Enterprise unleashes and fires all its guns its f***ing devastating. Not 1 or 2 little peww peww lasers, its like bristling with laser turrets and missiles and s*** and just goes off.

After drooling over previews in the prior weeks i was eager to get a taste of the whole movie.... in a nut shell (help i'm in a nutshell) it was bloody brilliant! I thought the the new actors really portrayed their characters superbly. The dialogue wasn't too tekky babby and overall just enjoyed the whole structure of it all.

I'm definitely +1 for the battle scene...

Saw it last night at IMAX. Freakin' awesome.

Many tips of the hat to the Original Series, it made fanboys like me cheer and non-Trekkers say how entertaining it was. Zachary Quinto was great as Spock but Simon Pegg kept stealing scenes as Scotty.

Well done JJ Abrams, bring on the sequels!

I need to be convinced before i go watch something like this, mainly because:

1 - I'm no star trek fan to say the least, in fact, i don't think i've seen 1 episode of star trek.

2 - I'm no science fiction fan either. I mean sci fi mixed with martial arts, guns and bullet time is cool and all (read: matrix) but i don't dig on futuristic ships shooting each other with laser beams in space.

3 - There's a lot of nerdy/geeky stereotypes surrounding star trek fans so i associate anyone who watches Star Trek to be nerdy anti-social rejects of society.

4 - I have 2 free gold class tickets that i've been saving for a blockbuster film.

My question to you is (to those that have seen the movie who somewhat fall in any of the above categories): Taking the above points into consideration, would you still recommend i go watch Star Trek?

go go go!

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, I just got home from seeing it and thought it was fantastic.

I'm not big into science fiction but could really appreciate the imagination and thought that went into the film.

I'd definitely use the two gold class tickets to go and see it.

You don't need to be a trekkie to enjoy star trek.

I just got back from seeing this, 10/10.

Everything flowed quite easily, storyline was very good as was the acting.

Also the new jack black movie looks good, and the new will farrell movie looks s***..

I also saw it tonight, and thought it was surprisingly good.
Too much shaky cam, especially during the fights. For so much action you can see so very little.
Despite this I'd recommend it. Make sure you see it at the cinema's. Don't ruin it by watching it on your monitors.

I'd prefer to watch it on my monitor than listen to loud c***s talk through the whole movie, Comparing it all to the original. Pointing out inside jokes that no one gives a f*** about. A ton of c***s around you eating food from a bag thats the size of a small child.

f*** Cinemas.

Well missed out last night but saw it tonight and well, f*** me that is awesome. The first hint was that while standing in line for the 8pm session - it sold out. So got tickets to the 9.30 which was filling up and by the time we got back to the cinemas at about 9.10 it was sold out too. These are pretty big cinemas too (Jam Factory on Chapel St).

From an entertainment action flick movie set in space and as a Star Trek movie it excelled on both accounts - damn it was good. Particularly with the opening scene being very action intensive and it didn't really let up until the end. The dialogue was good with Simon Pegg doing a great job - in fact all the new crew were very well matched to the old crew.

The only downfall was not enough lesbo action with the green chick and Ulurahaha.

I'm not a star trek fan. I remember watching the first 4 star trek movies as a kid and that's been about it. I know the basics of the characters and I really enjoyed this as it was a great prequel IMO. Hardcore fans of any show will never be pleased what comes out so forget trying to please them. This succeeded in starting a new wave of star trek movies if they wish there to be any more which i'm sure they will. Great watch.

This is the rush hour of the future. Lots of jokes, action and a thin plot! It was a perfect mix for an entertainment session as opposed to a startrek circlejerk.

I give it 10/10 for entertainment value and i'd watch it again.

I'm not a star-trek fan but at the end I almost felt like watching some if any of it lives up to that movie.

Went and saw this tonight, and right the way through it was obvious entire scenes were ripped straight from other sources.

I mean skip to 2:30 of this, recognise the openening scene?

Just replace the Kraken shown in the above video with a Nephilim Tiamat Dreadnought, the Stellar Acretion Device effect is basically identical.

And Enterprises phasers? Why not just rip off WC2's Flak Cannons or BSG's batteries.

Very average movie with some very 'meh' effects, and more s***ty camerawork (seriously, you know that cameras CAN in fact be held steady on a single spot rather than constantly orbital panning?

Edit: Or alternatively it's just Star Wars 4.

While I generally agree that time travel is steaming wad of turd to be avoided like children and animals, it was a pretty easy way to drop a clean slate.

Like the guy said because Nero had comeback the present was now completely different, read: now we can scrap everything developed in the last ten movies.

Yeah, I cringed when the time travel stuff reared its head, but I thought they actually handled it all rather well. I was totally expecting some happy ending where they used time travel as their deus ex machina and rewound time so that vulcan was never destroyed and people were never killed, but they didn't, so props for that.

C'mon it was an awesome movie and an excellent trek reboot, but I'd suggest that not only did they rip off whole scenes, but whole plots as well!
Spoiler tags go out the window because Khel already blabbed about Vulcan, and you guys should know how this unfolds by now.

First up, in the opening sequence the big bad guy's ship swoops down and outguns the good guys.
There's prisoners taken, and the good guy's ship is sacrificed to allow the droids...err...Kirk as the saviour of the galaxy to get away at the last second.

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw01.jpg

Then, we cut to a bit later and we find the saviour left by society's wayside and wavering in the direction of his life.
The keep the plot moving an old codger comes onto the scene tells him that he knew his father and that he should go off to follow his destiny.

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw02.jpg

Meanwhile, the big bad guy has taken Old Spock prisoner. As the ultimate cruel act, he forces the prisoner to watch as the super weapon conveniently built into the ship fires a huge beam at the planet core and destroys their world!

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw03.jpg

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw04.jpg

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw05.jpg

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw06.jpg

The two main good guys realise they need to step up and save Leia...err Capt Pike from the bad guys and get out quick before...

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw07.jpg

...one of them hops aboard a tiny craft that is the perennial weakness of huge hulking planet destroyers, and manages to not only save a planet in the nick of time but destroy the bad guy's ship too!

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw08.jpg
http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw09.jpg

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw09a.jpg

Finally, after everyone and the galaxy are safe, Kirk gets a medal.
Spock deserved one too, considering even Han Solo got one.

http://home.pacific.net.au/~tmcgee/images/sw/sw10.jpg

Honestly, I was just waiting for Old Spock to announce at the end that Uhura is Spock's half sister and the incest
angle would have been covered as well. Maybe that's coming in the next trek flick!

All in all: 10 out of 10 J.J. Abrams for bringing Trek out of the doldrums but there won't be any Oscars for originality. :D

Awesome movie.

It might well be a rip job of episode IV ... but you know what it's one of the best sci-fis in years, it also stands as an action movie.

So at what part of Episode IV does Leia rescue luke from giant monsters on an ice planet, then beam him onto a ship thats travelling at warp speed?

Your synopsis is retarded, it picks out one or two scenes, bends the facts a bit and uses some colourful language to make it suit your point of view. I bet I could pick scenes from the new star trek, mix the facts around a bit and bend them to fit any number of other movies, doesn't mean its ripping them off though. Grow up.

I don't know why people conplain that 1 movie rips off another.

Like there has been many truely original stories in the last 10 years.

Generally i ignore the story in the movie and enjoy the acting, individual scenes, visuals, sounds, etc.

If you just look at the broad story you'll probably find it's been done countless times over.

Anyways, awesome movie. Hope they make another.
