Topic: Irish ISP Eircom agrees to disconnect illegal music download...

Interesting decision for an ISP to make.

IN a world-first move, an internet service provider (ISP) has teamed up with the record industry to disconnect users who illegally download music.

The record companies - EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner - had wanted Irish ISP Eircom to install software from a US firm to detect the "fingerprint" of copyrighted music files being sent on its network.

Eircom, which feared the software would have interfered with its broadband service and could break privacy laws, instead pledged to disconnect users who continue to download illegally after two warnings.

As part of the settlement reached after court proceedings this week, the companies agreed to supply Eircom with the IP addresses of people they detect illegally uploading or downloading copyrighted works on a "peer-to-peer" basis.

Thats BS, u cant have the record companies directly saying IP addresses they want disconnected.

Who verifies how they got the data?

Unless they are all static ip's there is a chance that they can acuse the wrong users, like if someone f***s up the time differences and acuses a user that had that IP but at a different time.

If the record companies think there is a crime being commited, report it to the police, let them investigate it and go from there.

The 'journalist' sucks, due to this quote:
The industry successfully beat Napster's song-swap service in court but music piracy continued to cripple the business, sending CD sales plummeting.

Citation please?

Of interest, iiNet have handed over to the WA? police a list of all users who have downloaded illegal material via PTP (and probably other means). I'm guessing other ISPs already have done so or are going to do so soon. The suggestion is they will start issuing sommons to those on the list, starting with the big fish and wrking down the list (probably settling out of court with the little minnows).

Ironically Eircom is owned by Babcock & Brown (and Australian Company).

It's all over the news here (obviously) and a few of the lads at work are panicking.

What's the bet Telstra tells everyone to sod off and lets people download whatever they want while other ISP's fold and lose customers, making Telstra the only ISP in Australia. Oh how this would make me smile, not because I want to see other ISP's fail but just because I know all of you here hate Telstra :p
