MasterCard® PayPassTM Tap & Go

Paypass Tap & Go is a great innovation that gives you the option of making purchases of $35 or less at participating merchants without having to provide a signature or PIN. You just 'tap' your card on the PayPass reader, wait for the green light and 'go'.

It's about time Australia had this facility which is available in so many other countries. Don't even get me started on public transport, for example (e.g., Oyster card in London).

Is anyone using this already? I wonder if there are any participating merchants at all.

Go Cards work the same way as Oyster... except charge you more and dont work on random ocasions and dont caculate discounts (frequent travel) properly.

But other then those small thingsm exactally the same.

As for the MasterCard, I guess it would be ok with a 35$ cap per transaction. People could ring up a lot of transactions by the time you realised you lost your wallet while drunk last night and had time to cancle it though.

Would you, as the consumer, actually be bothered if they didn't work from time to time? :) I mean so long as they let you walk out with the goods still that is.

Worst part is despite what Translink say the system is capable of doing it - they're both done by Cubic Transportation Systems and are essentially the same system.

wtf? I'd much rather wait the 20-30 seconds and use a pin/sign.
As if you wouldn't have $30-40 cash on you at all times...(with a knive to protect it of course..)

i pretty rarely carry cash these days, almost never more than $50 unless i'm making a large cash transaction within a day or so. aka cars, guns, coke or hookers.

other than that i pay with a card.

And then wait as it sends...verifies...sends back...prints receipt...oh wait no that's just signing in for today...sorry....rescan? Sorry about this...ok...pin again....wait here's a receipt for the cancellation of the last one.

f*** THAT, bring on the Tap&go.

Admitedly they don't work on occasion, but generally that results in your getting a free ride.

I don't know what you're talking about with the calculating discounts thing? They got rid of that whole idea and now you get a similar discount on each journey

eg. $3.40 for 3 zones paper ticket, $2.72 for 3 zones go card journey.

Prob for me is bank fees. I only have 15 free ATM transactions a month. I usually pull $200 at a time and live on that for a while until it runs out, so I always have cash in my wallet (with no knife to protect it). I figure the one day I get mugged the dudes can have the cash and all the joy in the world to them - I don't give a f*** about losing $200 if I was mugged, in fact it would probably make the muggers leave quicker since they would be reasonably satisfied with that outcome.

What I don't understand about our whole banking system is the lack of functionality in almost all aspects. Take net banking for example - I can think of a million ways to improve that (at least, CBA anyway) - with informative charts and so on, all of which I am forced to do in Excel currently. At least they offer 7 years of online statements, but in a totally unusable format for access to the actual (PDF) if you want to try and do anything meaningful with it.

And it's slow, so so slow to adopt anything. Like BPay view as an example - and almost essential service, and how many billers don't provide for it. I'd like to know the reason why, if the expense is prohibitive or what?

Credit card PINs FTW! I'm so stoked we have them now, it makes things so much easier to pay.

Are these tap and go things the same as the RFid cards Myth busters were going to do a show on? You might recall the major credit card comapnies threatening legal action if they aired the show.

Not sure if this is relivent but anything without a PIN just seems like asking for trouble to me.

I purchase my motorcycle parking tickets with my Visa Card now. No PIN or anything needed for it.

f***ers finally installed a new machine that CC's work on. Sure beats the s*** out of carrying coins around. Sometimes I forget to have change so I then gotta go buy some s*** to get coins. Also instead of being a little over or under the time I need because I don't have the right coins I just stick in my plastic and can adjust by 10c increments and that right there is winsauce.

Kinda funny cause the new machine has only been there a few weeks and its already broken itself... "Machine out of order" on the LCD for the past 2 days... free parking for me so I can't really complain too much ;)
