Your best bet is getting it on the yes $19 iPhone 12 month plan. The cost of prepaid+unlock is pretty much equal to 12 month plan + insurance and free unlock. Just register the plan, and then put all the money you've saved onto the account immediately. Over the next 12 months it just deducts from that credit and then cancel after 12 months.

I was looking around to buy one outright. Just missed out on a 16GB from Telechoice for 849. Fone Zone was selling them for 1199 or something.

I'm glad I didn't get one outright though because the best part about it is the internet in your pocket. I ended up getting on the Virgin 70/m plan that gives you 1GB data.

There is advantages for getting a phone outright but when you need to package in a plan with significant data (> 100Mb) a month then it almost makes sense to go on a contract.

My normal spend on a bill is around $50/mth regardless of iPhone or not. So if we take a 12 mth time period I would calculate that I'd spend $600/yr just in the plan/prepaid/postpaid/whatever. Combine this with the purchase price of $800 and a reasonable assumption that a data pack would cost $180 ($15/mth) extra then my total cost in 12 mths would be $1580.

So I went and got on an iPhone contract for $59/mth that includes voice calls, 200 SMS and 700Mb of data. The phone payments are $32/mth so this equates to $1092 over 12 mths and I'd own the phone at the end.
