No-one did put a gun to this mans head to sign the dotted line, he and every man there volunteered to do that s***ty, dangerous job and you should be thankful that they do.
He didn't die for the politicians, he died doing the job that he loved, which as an officer in special forces is a very high pressure dangerous one and at the age of 25 is more responsibility than we will ever know. You may not agree with politicians reasons for being there, but for the men who go that reason pales in comparison with the drive to do their job, do it well and make sure that they and the men next to them all come home. Unfortunately that didn't happen, it is a sad day. |

Really? I know heaps of guys in the army that didn't enjoy it, had no idea why they were there, and were more interested in stealing other soldier's medicine and eating it.
They thought guns were cool - but that's about as far as their enthusiasm went. Every war that has happened since I was born has been a politician's war, with citizens on either side of the debate, not one where brave heroes must defend their families or anything like that. |

They thought guns were cool - but that's about as far as their enthusiasm went. Sounds like you know the kinds of people we don't want in the army, most of the blokes I know love their job and would give anything to get overseas and do it for real, it is a big deal for them. I know I do, I have been to Iraq twice as a cavalry soldier and I can tell you that while it was an unpopular war, we did make a difference in the lives of the local people who had to try to get on with life in that s***hole. They got a raw deal with not only the government they had but the terrain and climate they deal with daily, it is not a nice place to be. We had a job of ensuring their police and army could deal with any security problems in the area and the difference of a few short years between 2006 when I was first there and mid this year when I last left there is huge. Police and soldiers actually turning up to work and responding to problems, water pumps supplied by us supplying towns, schools built and furnished by us actually being used, kids having something to do other than dodge bombs on the streets... the list goes on. It's not perfect over there granted, it probably won't be for a while if at all, but the impact left by the men and women wearing our uniform will be long lasting and we are proud of the job we did as should you be, even if you disagree with the politicians reasons for sending us there. |

They do it for the money.
Nobody goes to Afghanistan because they are protecting Australia. What right does Australia have to go to another country and fight against Afghanis that want the right to determine their own political identity ? |

Well if the aussies have bigger guns, then they have more rights. |

The aussies went into Afghanistan because john howard didn't have enough balls to say No to big Bad America and not because they wanted to help the Afghanies. Same thing with Iraq. The soldiers get told what to do and they do it, they're getting paid either way. Nationalism/Patriotism or whatever you wanna call it is what helps them sleep at night. last edited by ZIZ at 18:47:13 30/Nov/08 |

The SAS are professional soldiers. They live, eat, s*** and die for the Regiment. Those c***s are as tough as they come and they don't f*** around and whinge about their orders they just get on with it.
No amount of money can compensate those diggers for the risky s*** they take on. 'Who dares, wins.' last edited by sLaps_Forehead at 21:13:33 30/Nov/08 |
